Are pod filters as good as a paper filter supplied originally with the car? I dont want to risk damaging the engine or turbo and am considering going for a modified VR/VS V8 air box for my engine (RB25DET) to replace the pod filter I have on it at the moment. An additional bonus would be silencing the induction and BOV noise which shits me as it makes it obvious it's got a turbo as well as getting a cold air induction to it....

It works now but I'd like to know if a pod lets more tiny particles through it compared to a paper filter, you can see right through the pod filter when its out of the car....

I've also heard of pod filters damaging AFM's because of the oil getting dislodged and damaging the hot wire element...

Info pls!!!

Cheers

I've seen arguments from both sides of the fence. But I figure that if car makers are going to spec a paper filter on a Corolla with an expected life of over 200000km, then they can't be too bad. Combine with that the fact that it's easy to prove that they're barely restrictive (in comparison to the rest of the intake system), and it's hard to fault paper.

I believe the problems you mention with oiled cotton (poorer filtration and oil discharge) are real, but not necessarily devastating.

Car manufacturers choose things based on different criteria though. A paper filter will simply clog when it gets dirty, resulting in poor performance... who cares, at least the engine's still ok it's just gutless... A foam filter is sensitive to being oiled properly, too little oil and it doesn't filter well, too much oil and it'll get sucked into the engine. From that perspective, paper filters are much easier.

BOZZ- If you can, have a look at the VT V6 filterbox and element and see if you can use that as they have a bigger filter element. I reckon the paper ones work dam good, currently i have a custom box i made up which uses a $16 VT paper element and my car (13bt rx-7) has made 280RWKW so if you take that into account they can't be to restrictive :)
