View Full Version : Comm 5spd vs Sigma 5spd
Can anybody tell me FOR SURE whether the 5 speed as used behind the 202 in the VH and VK is the same box as the 5 speed used in a Sigma?
I am under the impression that they are, but I've heard a few contradictions as well.
I have only ever heard that they are the same box. I can't swear to the ratios being the same, but it is supposed to be the same model Borg Warner box otherwise.
Supposed to have a reputation for being a little fragile behind the Holden motor...slightly underspecced for the torque.
cheers

Borg Warner M76 is the type of box in the VK.
VH Commodore is the Borg Warner M75.
Aaaaah!
You know I haven't thought about this since high school...and the more I think about it, the more I realise I knew nothing back then.
Is there any significant differences between them LJ, or are they 2 different designations for what is essentially the same box? (Meaning, is it the same case, with maybe 1 or 2 uprated bearings or something?)
cheers
Heaps of cars use the same box as the Sigma - we compared a Sigma box to an XE Falcon box and they're the same model, but there is a slight difference - there's a series of X's after the code ie. 509X or 509XX and it seems that these X's indicate some kind of strength but i'm not sure. Anyway, the 509 appears to be in a shitload of 80s cars.

thats what id be assuming to GTSBOY, dont think Holden would warrant changing the internals..just like you said perhaps upgraded a few bearings maybe..id have to take a look in a gregorys VH or VK manual to tell if there was difference.

they are the same, but there not ;)
for eg;
My mums falcon 3 spd auto is a BorgWarner 35
My Galant was a 3spd auto and it was a BorgWarner 35
Now I 100% sure there different as you not gonna have the same box behind a torque meister 4.1L and a weezy 1.6L!!
I think they are the same case, but completly different internals.
BTW I have a sigma 5spd and i can give you numbers if you want, the auto still in the shed so i can give you numbers from that aswell.
Cheers Karl
I wouldn't have said TOTALLY different internals - maybe bearings or something but i'd say the gears themselves are the same. I've killed diffs and motors, but never a gearbox so i'd say that the Sigma gearbox is actually quite strong.

Ive heard the same thing from some guys i know who have owned/raced several sigmas/scorpions ect.
They all tell me how good the BW 5spd boxes are. And how expensive the jap 5spd boxes are to fix.
And realy, there aint much thats simpler than anything built by borgwarner.
Jap 5 speed costs something like $1200 to rebuild - the BW box apparently can't even get rebuilt anymore because half the bits are obsolete. I know definitely speedo gears for the 4 speed are no longer available.
I've had 1 Jap 5 speed, BW 4 speed and BW 5 speed and I reckon the Jap box is the best, although the BW 5 speed was ok except for the phantom gear between 2nd and 4th which wasn't really a gear at all :)
