There seems to be alot of ppl who say the nics version is crap.
I've heard that there is some difference in the inlet manifold but not exactly sure what it is.
Can anyone tell me why the eccs is so much better than the nics & what the difference is?
My mates got a R31 GTS-X with a nics & we're putting a hi flowed VG30 turbo on it with a EMS computer. What sort of power could he expect from this setup?. Already has a 3" zorst from turbo back.
Well, the NICS motor is down on power over the ECCS by about 20kW from the factory. The ECCS motor got the full ceramic ball bearig turbo thing so it spooled faster and made boost earlier.
The NICS inlet manifold is much smaller internally than the ECCS manifold.
And there were a host of other smaller changes, mechanical and electronic control wise that helped make the extra power.
The NICS motor is not crap...it is a nice motor...but the ECCS motor is better, and so cheap that you have wonder if it is worth playing with the NICS motor.
If your mates motor was an ECCS motor I would expect that he could make about 190kW @wheels with that setup as long as it wasn't getting too lean. Many ECCS motors make it to about that without changing injectors etc. (Note I assume a big front mount intercooler is fitted).
I reckon the NICS motor would keep you somewhat lower than that, but have no idea what the limits on things like injectors are on the NICS motor.

Would it be worth fitting a eccs inlet manifold to his engine?
He dosen't really want to do a engine swap yet as it's his daily driver & he can't afford to have it off the road.
I don't think you could fit the ECCS manifold. If the simple things like head studs aren't different, then many of the bolt ons (like idle air motor and so on) will be sufficient;y different that you might end up tearing your hair out trying to make the ECU talk to them.
I will admit to not knowing if it can be done, but knowing Nissan, they would have taken the opportunity to make something electrically incompatible while they could.

just wanted to mention that the eccs gear does bolt to the red top rb20 as i had one in my possesion not so long ago in a vl commodore. i have no idea why it was not installed with a full silver top rb20 in the first place, but with the eccs gear and a rb25 turbo, it went rather well :p
Just to update RB20 fans, my mate fitted the turbo & EMS computer & got a very impressive 177rwkw out of his nics engine.
It still uses the very small std intercooler & that was with std injectors & pumps.
Cool. At that sort of power I guess it is up against the limit on the injectors now...so it should be fun til the bug bites again!!
