yea well i drained the oil outa the galants diff...and there was a HELL of alot of little metal bits in there....heaps of rely fine bits and some larger chunkier ones too....
I know this is bad, but how bad is it?? I Havnt had any troubles with the diff as it dosnt clunck/whine (yet).
Should i be chasing down a new diff???
Karl
How big are the chunks? What style of diff is it, ie. does it have a diff hat you can remove to have a look inside it.
hehe, im guessing the chunks didnt just magically appear, so they musta come from somewhere :p

no diff hat....
little chunks...like bout size of sand grains....some about the size of 2-3.
I saved all of the old oil.
Just put some penrite hypoid back in.
Diffs are pretty robust, as long as the chunks don't look remarkably like a pinion tooth you should be okay. Grains of sain chunks aren't a big issue, especially in a bitsishiti.
Only tip's I have would be to change the oil again in a month or so, trying to flush any metal out so as to minimise damage. Any chunks still in there will rapidly increase the wear rate. Also, see if you can get a drain plug with a magnet.

It's pretty common, so don't stress. As someone already mentioned, a mag. plug is good, or if you cant get one strap a powerful one to the bottom of the diff to trap any big bits to the bottom of the housing. Mine looked tha same the first time I changed it, but it's pretty much normal wear in a car that gets a bit of a flogging at times (On private property of course!!) I rectified the problem by atually changing my diff oil at regular intervals!-Who would have guessed regular maintenence would actually help anything!!
Seriously though-Another good tip is to put a teflon treatment in the diff too-the difference can be remarkable sometimes.
Take it easy Karl

Thrash that Galant baby.
I remeber you were sniffing around different engine swaps for it-and I thought the old toyota mini hemi style V8 would be nice-no bigger than a 3.8 commonwhore donk-BUT ALL ALUMINIUM! Parts are easy to get-and there is a fair old bank of knowledge about them out there too. (did the dimensions of the 1FZ put you off abit? I actually measured my old GB galant up for a chrysler 360 at one point-It'd fit believe it or not!)

ow yea...its a humungo engine bay!!!
Hmm well youve prolly heard i lost a uni joint, so it aint going nowere for a while :(
And yea its already got the magnet plug...talk about pain in the ass to get the chunks off the magnet!!! Cos there is a slot around it, and theres plenty of chunks in there...had to blast it with water to get it off!
