View Full Version : better alternative to dizzy in a sigma???

I have a 2L GJ sigma, and I have just put a new head on (useless info). I had to pull a lot of bits out (of course), so a few things have moved out of whack. The entire rev range is a giant flat spot, but my carby is about as crap as it can be and still run.

I know I need a new carby, and I am still thinking about my options for what to buy with that (Holley and adaptor place, or fork out big money for a twin weber setup).

The question I wanted to ask: Is there anything I can do to replace/improve my dizzy that is not expensive? I have heard 'stuff' about hall effect sensors, and kit ingnition kits (which sound pretty cool). I just want to know, if anyone has tried it, and was it worth the effort/money.

Narcolepsy.

the hall effect distributors in sigmas are actually pretty good, very little goes wrong and they are reasonably accurate. the only thing ebtter is EFI and a multi coil setup, but that sounds like it'd be out of your budget.

twin Webers are the way to go on sigmas, i wouldnt consider a holley on these engines, particuarly if you are sticking with the stock inlet manifold. might as well just get the stock solex working, or use the larger throat plastic solex from a 2.4 L300.

If your budget is small, the Jaycar programmable ignition kit might be what you are after. It's been discussed here numerous times. You fix the advance in the dizzy, then the kit intercepts and adjusts the output.

RE: your flat spot...did you drop the cam sprocket? your cam timing could be off.

I haven't let the cam sprocket leave the chain ever, however I am not the person that built the engine. I know now, in hindsight, that the guy who built it was a bit of an idiot, and started taking shortcuts as soon as he got sick of building it.

It is entirely possible that the cam timing is out, it would explain a couple of things. Is there any way I can check or rectify this without having to pull the front off the engine? I am moving to a house that has no public transport on thursday, so I can't afford to go for more than a day without the car...

yeah...you need a degree wheel, a magnetic base dial indicator and the timing specs for your cam.

Check out all the timing marks for a quick reference but you will need the stuff I listed to be precise.

as secoh said the dizzy with the module on the side of the dizzy is meant to be good, ive got the import dizzy(well i 'think' its import, cant find anything about it), which is elec and all you have to do is hook two wires to coil :D E Z!;)

I plan on rallying this car in about 12-18 months, so that be the most awesome thing, but I just don't have that money atm. Dual webers would be nice, but I am not prepared to pay more than $150 - $200 on a carby until the sigma proves it won't break again (ie. I don't have to fix it for 6 months).

Thanks for the offer though. If I remember correctly, you offered to sell me something last time I was in need too, cheers :D

pffft sigma, go get a galant or a lancer, then drop that motor in...you drop a fair few kilos, and you inherit some handling!

How hard is it to get the motor (and perhaps gearbox?) into a galant? And are they RWD???

ermm...as for the motor, two words:

Drop IN

Ive done it :D with a 2ltr anyways

THe GC/GD galants in the us an japan were 2lts so the engine bay was made for the 2lt astron motor, which is same size as 2.6lt

have a look at http://www.galant.8m.com for pics of my conversion

If you get a jap 5spd there meant to be bolt in, but i aint sure cos i used the BW 5spd...all info in the site.

And of course there RWD!
