My 200sx has been making a ticking noise ever since I've had and is worse when the engine is cold . It sounds to me like a leaking exhaust but couldn't be becuase the exhuast is pretty new all the way through . The noise seems to increase with engine rev's the rockers are another thing that comes to mind, what do you guys think?.

could be just the injectors,, i know on my cousins sr20 180sx his injectors tick quite loud... maybe its just a common thing on the sr since the injectors are mounted so high up.

What oil are you running? Should be around the Nissan specified viscosity ofr 7.5/30. If it's much thicker than around 10/30 it could be that one of the Hydraulic Lash Adjusters isn't pumping properly (especially in cold weather). Would be worse when it's cold as the oil is thicker and would get better when it warms as the oil thins. Maybe try thinner oil or some of that Nulon E30 stuff, as a couple of friends had good experiences with it temporarily quietening noisy lash adjusters.

I would be surprised if it was injectors, as it shouldn't change with engine temp.....

is this a really bad thing?

its your valvetrain all right, but i wouldn't specifically isolate it to lifters YET. I've heard of some lifters being extremely noisy in some cases. change your oil. Injectors aren't that loud.

Yep, I'd agree with sssgtr, change the oil and see how you go. If you live in a cold area, try a 5w50 odd.

As for if it's a bad thing - not good, but likely not tragic. It will reduce the life of them over the span of the engine, but not something which would likely break them within 6 months. If it is sticking HLA's then it's a relatively simple operation to pull them out and hand bleed them, if you're mechanically inclined.

my mates sr20 180sx did the exact same thing. hate 2 say it but ended up being a big end bearing.
