A friend has a liberty 4WD auto, I think its about a 91 or 92 model and the speedo stopped working. After a bit of analasis we found it has a speedo cable going to the instrument cluster from the automatic tranny. This cable isnt turning. We lifted the cable out of the tranny and it doesnt turn in there either...

Speedo and cruise control dont work as a result.

Is it a home repairable problem?

not sure on what the setup is like, but it could be the sender, or the actual cable itself is gone.

Had a similar problem with my vl, the cable broke off from the sender, which is controled by a gear in the gearbox.

Could be costly to replace.. did it just fail, or did he do something to induce the failure?

Giving the car a hiding, can actually damage the speedo sending/drive equipment.

The speedo drive is a plastic gear in the Gearbox that on the FWD manual at least. (NALiberty's blown box)

Could be a stripped speedo gear but wouldn't have thought!!!

I stripped down an 1982 Subaru auto and its gear was metal, so maybe autos stayed with metal???

The Liberty speedo cable is a two piece job on the auto and it may have separated in the centre, get the cable out and turn one end to see if the other end turns... If it is the cable I have one sitting in the garage at home spare - you know where to get me
(byb).

If it is the speedo gear and liberty auto cases are the same concept as the earlier you can drain all the fluids and crack the front half of the case open to reveal the front diff. The speedo drive is in this section of the box and I would be confident myself of replacing it at home, dunno how game you are at pulling stuff apart though ;) Shouldn't be a too expensive job for a trans place or subaru to repolace though.
