everyones seen it at the drags, but is it legal to remove back seats on a road going car? I've been told that u must have some sort of 'structre' in place of them, I.E. a sub box or something.
I'd rather have alloy sheeting or something going over with a very roomy and smooth look. anyone know if this is legal at all?
This will be in a 82' GJ 2.6l Sigma if that helps..
BTW Im in South Australia, dunno if the laws very from state to state...
In NSW if it's a two door you can remove the rear seat as long as the front seats are "fixed" preventing access to the rear, seat belts are removed and no one is seated there (DUH!!!) AFAIK

hrm wonder if i took all the handles, catches etc off the back doors and welded the doors over....its a long shot but hey u aint gonna hit the target if u dont aim for it hey :P (its a saying, im not a weirdo)
the id plate or compliance plate of the vehicle identifies how many people it can seat - you would need to have it reregistered as a 2 (or 3 for a front bench) seater to get past a roadside inspection. "i'm in the middle of replacing the carpets officer" is a good response.... ;)
To just do it for the drags shouldn't be a problem if you plan to replace them. Just don't get caught! THe scrutineers shouldn't go spare over it either. Dont remove any rear firewall paneling though.
One thing, when you remove the seats you should either seal over the bolt holes in the floor as theygoo all the way through, or, if you will be replacing the seats, replce the bolts with the various washers in the same places so you dont loose them or stuff up re-assembling a belt stalk or similar.

Well, i dont plan to put the seats back in. i was thinking of getting some alloy/tin sheeting around 3-5mm thick and putting that over the back followed by carpeting to make it look neat....
Yeh i forgot to add the bit in about the plates stating 5person seating, i spose there would be some set rules to class the car as a 2 seater car etc that id have to change on the car...
A drop/call to regency mite help i think, cant seem to find anything on the transport site.

what wrong with the back seats???
They would weigh bugger all...maybe ~3kgs or so....
I turfed my back seats
cost me a trip to my local mechanic to get a blue plate (QLD) to say it's now a 2 seater. Rego is no extra, just more paperwork for them, not my loss ;)
My car is a SA car with only 2 seats, still registered as a 5 seater AFAIK. Cops have never hassled me about it as I have sparco seats in the front and 4 point harnesses which mount to the rear shelf, the back is just all black carpet.
I spoke to regency about it and all they said was to make sure there were no seatbelts back there and no seat and all is good
