View Full Version : Supercharged V6 auto to manual

All the Supercharged V6 commodores are autos, which is a real shame as these things would be great with the potential they have if they were a manual... the stories holden were originally saying were the V8 boxes wouldn't fit and the standard V6 boxes weren't strong enough for them, I reckon it's coz if they were a manual people would have wanted them over the V8 for the potential they have.
So now I ask, has anyone seen one converted to a manual, can it be done?
An engineer at GMH told me that the reason the SC Commie was never offered as a manual is that during testing it was found that the engine blew pistons as regular as clockwork if it was lugged (high load/low rpm).
One problem with converting these cars to manual is that they use a PCM (integrated engine + trans ECU). Changing to a manual 'box would undoubtedly trip error codes in the PCM and may even cause the thing to run permanently in limp-home mode. Perhaps a re-calibration using Kalmaker or some form of 'chip' may overcome this but would be best to investigate first.
There is one "test" supercharged V6 at the PG. As far as I know, they have a lot of trouble keeping boxes alive in it.
There are several reasons why they didn't offer a manual. The above mentioned labouring of the engine and the political ones. When they first released the V6sc they were also trying to sell the last series of the small 5L V8s before they introduced the LS1 to the v8 range. The V6sc is extremely limited by its exhaust (same as stock v8) just changing the exhaust alone could provide the same power as the small v8! Not to mention the weight/handling abilties. Its hard to sell a v8 when you have a 6 thats faster! Also to start with you could only get the V6sc on cars which only had the auto (such as calias/statesmen) for this reason. They still needed to sell the small v8 cars.
The v6sc engine comes as a whole from the US. It has been my experience that this engine is actually better balanced than the standard v6 produced in australia.
I wouldn't have thought the torque would be enough to kill boxes but I guess if you can't get a v8 5speed to fit then your choices of reasonable strength boxes is very limited.

Where did you hear that? Supercharged V6's are made on the same production line in Fishermans Bend as the standard V6.
Still a pushrod motor!!!!;) ;) :D
*runs and hides* :p
They are now.
But they weren't orignally. The VSII and VT1 were all complete buick engines from the US.
KDog is correct. The original S/C V6's (L67)came straight from the states, like mine!
