Ok am hoping you guys can help with this. Car is a 89 Mazda MX6, FWD.

Driving my car home the other day, almost around the corner from home I do a U turn into a drive way and reverse out. As I take off to go forward again, ie wheels at almost full lock and let clutch out, can feel the car kind of like there is tension whinding up in the driveline then takes off and does a massive hesitation and a loud clunk as the whole drivetrain kind of shudders/bangs and continues. Like it has gotten through the tension, or something slips for ages then bangs into motion again??

Car seems to do this huge shudder then lunge back into driving off, can feel it through the drivetrain when the wheels are turned. IE- taking off around a corner or slowly driving with wheels turned. After it does this the steering wheel violently pulls to the left for a while when the car is driving straight before returning to normal.

The car will drive perfectly if left completely in a straight line through all gears and under full power. Problem happens even under minimal power with wheels turned.

Does this in 1st, 2nd and reverse gear, but not so much with only slight steering lock, seems to be worse with more lock...haven't tested more cause don't want to drive the car like this.

I know my CV's are stuffed, they have been clicking for ages, both sides. Is it the driveshaft's stripped maybe and causing this windup then clunk? Or the diff/gearbox.

Remember, it's only when turning, but does it when turning both ways. Have never experienced this kind of problem. I have checked it out and nothing obvious appears to be broken. Jacked up the car and spun the wheels with hand and you can hear a clicking kind of sound coming from the gearbox area. Also a strange thing, with the car in gear (1st and Reverse only) you can with your hands still turn the wheels over with some force.

HELP!!!! Have got new driveshafts already, will put them in on Wednesday, but if it's the box I'd rather wait and just do that straight away.

Thanks a million,
Pete

After doin some more research, am pretty certain the CV's have shit themselves due to my neglect.

Can someone confirm this for me please?

I don't think it is of much assistance, but what it sounds like you are experiencing is axle wind-up (or driveshaft wind-up as the case may be), similar to what you would expect on a car fitted with a locked diff.

Without having looked at it closer, I have no assistance to offer.... anybody else wanna have a go?

I think it would be the CV's as many people have reported that happening when they wear out...

Dont take only my advice for it, seek others who may know a bit more....
