get yoruself a 4agze and swap your 20v head over and have a 20v 4agze, then rip off the supercharger and replace it with the turbo of your chose... 20v head swap is very common and turbocharging the 4agze is also common.. plus it has semi forged pistons and lots of other goodies.. i heard somewhere it only cost 400 to do the head swap but dont quote me on that.

Im sorry but the 20v really isnt suited for turbocharging at all neither is the 5 valve head. The 20v has very high compression, small ports and inards which are suited to revving rather than torque loading.

The best way to build a 4A-GTE would be as follows:

- Series II (MAP) 4A-GZE block (forged & oil cooled pistons, fat bastard conrods, steel crank)
- 86kw non TVIS head (larger inlet ports, higher lift cams).
- Quad Throttles form the 20valve.
- Management which can map against TPS and MAP (ie Autronic)
- Set of adjustable cam gears

Toymods has a great article which goes into more detail right HERE (http://www.toymods.org.au/4A-GTE/)

It has been tried and proven, for example the YOGI8U 4A-GTE TA22 made a massive 189kw at the wheels with a 12.3sec ET

Or on the cheap....

Use the entire Series II (MAP) 4A-GZE (its the strongest). Then remove the supercharger and install all of the appropriate turbo gear.

The stock ECU can map for 14psi of boost so as long as you stay within that limit then the stock ECU will do fine.

The fuel mapping will be slightly off though untill the ECU learns a new fuel map (closed loop feature) which won't take long at all.

Where do non-TVIS 86kW heads come from? Imports, I assume, but what cars; do you know?

Haydn,

20V not cutting it? I know youve got the microtech which you can run on the motor anyhow so that solves that one problem of management.q

The only large port non T-VIS heads I know of are the early ZE's (like my mr2 motor).

tvis is part of the manifold design and not the head so it doesnt matter as long as its big port =[]

The engines in the 4AGE family that had bigport (TVIS) were:

- Series 1&2 4AGE's (86kw) up to late 89

- Reliable sources say the early (108kw) 4AGZE's

Usually imports however i think the early Australian twin-cam corolla may have used the Series one 4AGZE.

Im pretty sure all and only the TVIS models used the Bigport head. The ports needed to be larger so that the two smaller circular ports (one was the TVIS butterfly) per runner could fit.

Other wise toyota would've gone small port for gas velocity

Ummm.... well!

that wasnt me who posted this thread...

i know exactly what it will take to turbocharge my engine already...

they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but that doesnt really mean i like this person (whoever you may be) using my numberplate as his username... as you can see, all you guys thought it was me.

get a new username dude... you scare me.

also, just for the record... ill never turbocharge my engine. if i wanted a turbo AE-86, id go for a 1G-GTE...

im trying to be a bit 'tradidional' in keeping my car N/A, just like a majority of the Japanese guys do.

1. 1ggte is a junk engine, why you would ever want to insert this heavy piece of scrap metal into a car that relies on its light weight and well balanced chassis leaves me baffled

2. how do you mean traditional? true, alot of the japanese guys do keep their AE86's NA, but not with 20v, that seems to be some sort of myth. Want big 4ag NA power? 100kw 7 rib bottom end, big port head, quad throttles, high comp slugs and big cams. I also fail to see how the ghastly interior (just my point of view, everyone is entitled) is anywhere near traditional

3. Whenever I hear of people wanting to turbocharge 20v motors I always think to myself... :wtf:

Statts,

I wouldnt agree with u anymore than that!!! That is exactly right....1GGTE all iron POS......3SGTE is a better choice, even a 3SGE beams II if you want more capacity.....this motor is all top end!
My 3SGTE puts out more torque mid range than a 1GGTE does throughout its whole curve =] And hey I have 2 less cylinders....
Thats technology for you....

I cant understand why you would turbocharge a 20V.....was never designed around forced induction....hassles.....

Statts, whats the 2530 like lag wise...I would expect full boost by around 4K rpm?

Michael.

i dont want to do it... otherwise i would have. if i were to put an engine like that in a Sprinter, it would be a drag car... but im not all that interested in drag racing, so its more of a thought than anything else...

thanks for cutting me down nonetheless...

once again, thanks for your support...

i mean traditional in the sense that they pack N/A 4AGEs... thats all. i didnt really mention that "All the Japanese guys are running 20Vs"... i know very well that its not the case.

and how the **** is a stock interior, changed to black in colour, with a Momo steering wheel & a pair of Sparco seats 'ghastly'? compare it to the ripped, dirty maroon & beige interior that came in my car when i bought it, then tell me my interior is 'ghastly'... not that i give much of a shit what your opinion of my car is anyway, i love the ****ing thing & i built it to exactly the way i want it. and if that includes ditching the horrid, heavy, ugly factory seats for some racing buckets & swapping the bus-sized stock steering wheel for a Momo item, then who are you, or anyone else to argue?

(and what, are you telling me now that the Japanese AE-86 drivers dont swap steering wheels, or install racing seats in their cars???? of course not... )

what ive done to get on your bad side, i have no idea.

we're both in 100% agreement there... :D

Haydn,

I was merely stating my point of view, I think I am entitled to it, therefore, whatever I have done to get on your bad side, I don't know.

m1k3yz,

The GT2530 is not in the car yet, that engine is still in the process of being built, not far off now though, and I expect boost to hit lower than 4k.

Cheers

Chris
