hey howudoin,
i had the ca18det in my silvia but i sold it cause it blew smoke like u wouldn't believe. It was ok when it was cold but once the car started to warm up that was it, BUSH FIRE type smoke.
The problem was the turbo, the seals had gone on it and oil was leaking from it. Instead of buying a new turbo i decided to sell it but your mate probably doesn't want to do that.
definatley a tubo problem in my case could be different in yours.
Did yours blow smoke all the time or only when it sat idling for 5 mins? Any chance it could be stem seals?
my CA18 used to do that, i haven't noticed it for a while but i rarely let it idle for that long. also i changed brands of oil a few times and have a different turbo now. the motor has done about 60000k since i last saw it smoking without being cracked open so it must have been something else on mine.
Thanks for your help guys i think it is the turbo will get it checked out.
yep sounds like the oil seals in the turbo are dead
pretty common problem
basic turbo rebuilds aren't too costly, so just do that, and she will be as good as new

I've got the exact same problem, when i let car warm up, after 5 min or so it starts to smoke black smoke...otherwise it doesnt smoke at all, so its turbo problem? the turbo got a bit of shaft movement, its boosting 15 psi at the moment, can this problem with oil seals affect cars performance, by the way car is cordia turbo and its tc05 turbo with t3 turbo internals...so can anybody recommend of good place in Perth to fix this problem and how much would it approximately cost?
Regards.....
