Just wanted to know if the turbos found on diesel 4wd's are any good for a petrol v8 application??

they generally have a compressor/turbine match that does not suit petrol applications, because they are designed for the best response on a diesel with completely different characteristics.

It's quite true, but if you want to try it, go nuts!!!

Just out of curiousity... What would be the result of putting a diesel turbo on a petrol engine (of the same size) then?

as a rule diesel turbos have a different cumpreesor and turbine trim on the wheels, but they will still work ok, but keep in mind there will be better turbos to use with correct compressor flow maps

be carefull with this swap, some diesel turbos have the turbine wheel made of a different mix of steel and has a lower temp threshold. petrol engines have a higher exhaust temp than diesel so consult a turbo shop with the specs to be sure first!
