View Full Version : r33 gts-t rearend under a VL?
I may have a R33 GTS25-t independent lsd rearend avalible to me to put under my vl calais turbo 5-spd. i know it can be done as i know of a vl that has the full r32 GTR running gear! thats right, a 4WD VL:D i've seen it drive past once.
Apperantly it's got an engineers cert. but really badly fitted.
Anyone heard, seen, or done this conversion? any cutting involved? I'd love a bit more launch off the line! who wouldn't:)
It will not fit the VL rear end without massive amounts of surgery. Just coz the VL takes an RB motor stock does not make the floorpan the same as a Skyline.
The independant rear end design that was intended for Commodores (going back to the mid 70's on Opels and mid 60s on Mercs before that) is substantially different to the Nissan layout, so you can't even use the argument that it is possible to fit GM independant rear stuff on them.
The only VL I ever saw with GTR 4WD still used a solid rear end.
If you were going to be doing it you would be fabricating a half chassis to provide the four mounts for the subframe which would probably require most of the rear floor to be cut out and then rebuilt.
If you want a Skyline rear end it will be much better to get a Skyline.
I once herd a rumor that there was a full skyline GTR driveline & running gear under a VL Calais, 4WD & all:confused:

Yes, there are at least two R32/Commodore 4WD hybrids in Aus. And there is an IRS conversion being engineered/developed ATM. Will be ready to market in around six months - the manufacturer will be promoting it when it's ready to go!

VL commodore = mountain???
Don't people have more interesting moutains to climb?
(btw this is a joke)
That Calais cost the guy $120000 dollars to build too. It simply wasn't worth it.
The only ones I have heard of since that original one all used solid rear ends.

Cars never are!
I know a WB ute with a complete 300zx rear end in it, so yes you can do it. You would need to weld the skylines pickup points into the commodores floorpan...
Just buy an R33 it will be easier & better.
EDO: Nah that would be simple! :D
Why not get a skyline floorpan and weld the top halve of a VL on it.
If you are going to do that you could just get an R33 and put the VL Walky bodykit on it. No-one would know. :)

That's not such a bad idea... I've got a grinder and a welder... Hmmmm.....
Just make sure you dont put it on backwards...:D
Fine then, don't belive me, go to calaisturbo.com and check it out!!
It under articles - vlt/calais magazine, best commodore No. 3.
This is the one i've seen. A mate has been under it and he said the floor pans hadden't been cut? I am assuming r32 gtr's ang r33 gts-t use a similar rear end.
www.calaisturbo.com (http://www.calaisturbo.com)
I know its been done, & I didnt say you couldnt do it.
If your mate reckons the floorpan hasnt been modified then I'd love to know WTF the rear end bolts up to. Commodores DO NOT come with mounting points for skyline rear ends.
Im pretty sure its a total waste of time but if you want to then go right ahead...
I said the floor pans hadden't been cut! of corse there's modiforcations, holes drilled, bracket made ect. derr:p

How did they but the front hubs of the skyline onto the commodore? I'm thinking about this for the S13, but I'm assuming that the height of the whole thing would but the engine halfway out of the bonnet? Any body looked into it?

im not trying to encourage this topic but the hub problem was solved by using the complete skyline strut , no they dont bolt up they made it fit , really why bother go and by a gtr in the first place and stick the red VL turbo badge on the back:D
exec5ltrvl, Sorta what Ive been saying. If you want a GTS-t drivtrain the cheapest and best way of getting it is to sell what youve got & buy a GTS-t. Same with a GTR.
You can achieve anything, any conversion you like, if you have enough money but really whats the point?
Racedriver, converting a strut frontend to wishbones (S13 to skyline) is one of those situations. Sell the S13 & buy a GTR.
If you only want the bigger rotors then its not a hard thing to do.
do u know the difference between an IRS and a solid rear end?
u said u would love a bit more launch off the line, as far as i understand it, a solid rear end (which u currently have in the commodore) should out "launch" the irs from a skyline.
buy a skyline though, itll be easier.
Ok i've driven a manual gts-t and i can tell you it launched a hell of alot better than my vl! I know live r/e can be setup much better than mine is but what do u do!
I was just hoping to hear from some1 thats done it!!!
I love my vl, call it sentimental value, oh the memories:D

maybe i can shed some light on that ( re gts t launching )
true that the gts is irs but that doesnt account much for the launch as when the susp. squats the tread print on the ground starts to reduce . Shock/ spring rate has a lot more to do with it.
However VL manuals have never been easy to launch with ( street tyres) and i have a feeling that ratios also have a big part in this . I recently converted my V8 VL to a manual from auto using a supra conversion combined with a 3.45 ratio diff , previously the car would spin the wheels ( with brakes applied ) forever but now it just wants to move straight away and refuses to sit in one spot . I figued it was the manual but my friend has a walky that is a fair bit quiker but 10 /10 times my car will 60' in 1.9 secs where his is a 2.1 so gearing DOES make quite a difference .
