I've got an 87 Telstar Turbo and I'm currently weighing up my options I've got 3
1) rebuild my current SOHC motor and turbo and go the multipoint injection with custom computer: cost $2000 for the engine build $1000 for the turbo rebuild and high flow and $1500 for ECU and setup all up: $4500 = fast little huffa!
2) Get the FE3 motor and turbo it cost: $2000 for half cut. $1600 for t28 rebuild highflow (Plus getting one) $1500 for ECU and setup. = $5100
3) fit a KL v6 motor front cut $2500 modifyed engine mounts = $0 (mates rates) $500 modifyed exhaust and new discs alround. total = $3000max
What should I do?? I've heard the V6 KL has LSD aswell is that true?
I get 200hp from the KL
around 130-150hp from the rebuild and 180-220 from the FE3.
all rated at the flywheel.
What do you think?

carazy,

I wouldn't waste my time with the SOHC engine.

I say go the FE3. I assume by FE3 that you mean the DOHC FE 2 litre engine. If so, we put one of these in my brother's early model Telstar (AR?) ages ago. Mate, what a transformation! Those DOHC FE's are an absolute gem. The car is still getting around in Waikerie somewhere.

I can't believe more people haven't done the conversion. Unfortunately there aren't that many of them around at the wreckers anymore because people never caught on. Amazing. We paid $1400 for engine/ECU/wiring/AFM etc. Bloody bargain.

They have one of the best power deliveries of any engine I've encountered - they have stacks of bottom end, pull hard through the midrange and rev clean to 7000rpm. Beaudiful!

They are only rated at 140bhp (slightly more for later ones), but you certainly get all 140 of those neddies. No turbo required. (and I'm a turbo convert from wayback - I run an SR20 in my 1600!). It would almost seem a shame to ruin one with a turbo conversion, unless you wanted to leave the compression alone and run low boost - but where's the fun in that!

The KL is also a very good engine - but not without its problems - not to mention cost. I helped a friend put one in his KC Laser. We finished up rebuilding the thing before it went in. Very nicely made engine - like a Swiss watch, but you don't wanna have to buy parts for one! They go really well though.

Problems include oil usage and oil leaks. They are VERY difficult to get LSD gearboxes for (my mate paid $1250 for his) and when you do get one it is only a viscous LSD anyway - although they seem to work pretty well. Most of them come with autos :(

yeah I've been told by nearly every one to go the FE3 so I think I will. I'll get my current turbo and bolt it on to the FE3 for a little more ponies and I won't decompress it cause I'm only gonna run around 6-8 PSi (anymore and I'll need a bigger turbo)
cheers for the effort on the post dude!

i have a 87 mazda 626 with the fe 2l sohc turbo, its still running the centre injection, but ive rebuilt the turbo, engine with acl pistons bored 40thou, also a front mount cooler off a 2.2l mx6 turbo,2.5inch exhaust and on std boost(around 7.5/8psi) its making 75kw@wheels,this may not seem like alot to most but its enough to scare alot of 6's and v8's out there, plus the sleeper factor is fun.:)

Hey I don't know if you know about mx6.com but i'm a member there I have a fully built 2l sohc turbo motor with custom built inlet manifold and microtech. making 180.9 kw at the front wheels on 15psi...I am considering selling my bolt ons...i have a buyer for the turbo, computer, intercooler, fuel pump and fuel reg. but you might want to buy my inlet manifold and injectors. the head isn't std ethier...check out autospeed.com or mx6.com for more info.
