I currently have a Stock head unit , but i want one with a CD player on it. I have been quoted by a holden dealer for $1200. Would anyone know of a place that would sell it cheaper.

This price is making me consider an after market CD player, However the VT head Unit is twice the size of a regular aftermarket head unit. Is there a good way to cover the extra space with out buying one of those twice the size head units

Try Motorfield Pty Ltd in Thomastown Victoria. They are a wholesale place so you might need a company or business to purchase on your behalf. Should be about $350.00.

Don't be put off by the size. There are quite a few double-DIN (which is what you have) aftermarket (which will 99% of the time be better than OEM equipment) headunits on the market. However, if you only really want a CD-Player and can do away with the tape deck, then I'd just get a single-DIN unit. I'm sure if you consulted a car-audio dealer and showed them the colour of your money they'd be able to sort out a storage pocket in the space underneath. You can even get cd storage units to fit a single-DIN space but they cost waaay too much IMHO.

I fitted a JVC single cd to a mates VT six or so months ago.

You need a small cordless drill or a 90° drill, a pop rivet gun and a DIN pocket designed for a mazda 323. The DIN pocket costs about $20, haggle and you can get one for free when you buy the CD player. Rivet the cage into place, slide in the CD player, fit pocket - they snap in - and then put on the surround. Voila. Neat as a button and ANY aftermarket CD will be better than the Eurovox that Holden put in. Double DIN units will fit easy too, but 1) they are really expensive for what you get and 2) are friggin ugly I reckon :)

PM me if you need more advice on the install, Including the easy way to get the Deck out, Tricks we found for door speaker wires etc etc.

Cheers,

if your realy stuck for something to fill the hole under the cd player you can cut a detachable face carry case in half and use that.use the side with the logo on it ie: 'SONY' or 'KENWOOD' and it will look cool. It's a bit of a cheap and nasty way to do it but if your stuck....

can i put a sub in a 99 vt without changing the head unit?
Does the factory head unit have a sub output?
Hey
i recently bought a 1999 vt wagon and i hav a few questions about installing a system.
1- the stereo is a doublr din, and i want to put a single din. what do i do with the extra space in the dash?
2- which colour wires are for what?
3- where and how do i get the amps power cable through the firewall?
4- can i put 6x9s in the factory door speaker holes?
5- if the 6x9s dont fit in the factory door speaker holes is there any way to extend
the wires to the trunk?
6- i Know how to deal with the vertical part of the rear seats, but how do i remove the bottom part of the rear seat so i can run the rca cables to the subs in the trunk?
and last of all how do i run cable from the amp, which goes under the front passanger seat to the right side of the car for a sub level output control

i am new to the car scene and don't know much.
can you please help a fellow car lover out, your help will be much appreciated.
thank you

if you are looking at installing a sound system in a vt, you have a few options, firstly, you need to decide, is the problem the cost of a new head unit... or the look, cos there are no RCA outputs on the stock head unit. if u dont want to change the head unit, you will need an inline speaker cable to rca converter (around 500 bucks same as a head unit) to cut out the "noise" and run a clean signal to your amp. if u decide to go with the new head unit option - you can get nice pockets that fit in the 2nd din space that look good and come in really handy. the other option (although cheap and nasty) is the solder RCA ends onto your speaker wires and some Kicker amps will accept low voltage inputs such as this.

Big issue though. if you use the stock head unit, you have no seperate sub control or channel, therefore the output to the sub, even with correctly set up crossovers, will include voices etc, and will therefore not be as clean as if you use an aftermarket head unit with multiple pre-outs. hope this helps and is somewhat coherant.

ok, for the rest of your questions... (wasn't thinking before)
1) already answered
2) get a wiring harness for your car from a car audio shop like JB and then you can join the wires (colour to colour) and then just plug it in :) easy as! (or you can look at the connections and solder them (better connections but harder to reinstall stock unit
3)amp cable can run through the big rubber plugs (you will see quite a few, find 1 into the passenger footwell.
4) DO NOT use 6x9's, they are the cheap and nasty method of adding (a little) extra bass. use a good set of 2 or 3 ways in the back and a set of splits in the front using exsisting holes
5) to run wires to the boot, carefully remove lower door trims and run along there, then you can run under the folding part of the back seats and into the boot.

hope this helps - shannon

what high level to low level convertor are you using that costs $500 i normally use these from jaycar

they seem to work fine and only cost $13.25 each or cheaper if you buy 2 or more

You can turn off traction control on later moddel commodores ... if you are refering to DSC or ESP or what ever holden call there version you need to yank the fuse out.

Best bet is to put put some plugs into the fuse box, put the fuse inline then have a nice little switch in the line so you can easily turn it on and off when ever you want ...

i never even thought to check jaycar :P i have a jaycar amp, but anyway, the one i have seen is a kicker (i think) from JB, and it has full adjustability like you would get on an aftermarket head unit, therefore does a pretty good job, was told however that is still not as good as a true head unit... sumthing about early distortions due to head unit noise or sum such... i don't try to understand as i have an aftermarket :P
