Has anyone on these forums had any experience with hydraulic handbrakes, whether in a rally car or street car?? I'm trying to get a hold of one for my charade from MRT performance, but want opinions of those who use them before i fork out any pidgeons. The reason? cable handbrake is'nt up for much yanking anymore to do front wheel drive dorifto style, even in the wet. Any responses greatly appreciated. cheers, Frank. :p :p :rotflol:

revolution race gear sell them complete, or you can buy the master cylinder and make your own bracketry. it gets fited in the rear brake line in series, and if you arent careful it can bugger up the brake bias.

They do work really well when set up properly though. I used to have one in my rally car.

Does it use your original brake booster for hydraulic pressure, or is it an independant unit all together?

it is an entirely different brake cylinder, connected directly to the hand brake handle you pull. they are not boosted.

it is connected into the rear brake line, so when you pull it it pushes the brake fluid directly to the back brakes.

a side effect is if you have the hydraulic handbrake pulled on, then mash the brake pedal down, it can be reefed out of your hand...LOL

it is illegal to have a hydraulic handbrake without a separate cable brake by the way. not saying dont do it, just be aware.

Cheers for the advise, secoh, it's been a great help; everything about hydraulic hadbrakes is starting to become clearer to me now. Hey Will:D , how you doin man, hope to organise a day cruise one sunday through the hills if its sunny, have'nt seen you in ages man( oh, thats right, i saw you at autosalon!!). You'll be seeing more of the wombat on this site. BTW, next time i see you, i'll show you my homemade NOS setup for the charade, It's f***king hilarious man, you're gonna kill yourself laughing. It's crude, but it works, but i have no idea on how much of a dose of nitrous my engine's copping, better last!!

Just for your knowledge, the reason a Hydraulic handbrake is illeagle for the road, is the fluid will seap through the seal, and the handbrake will not hold...

They are designed for rally cars, not for holding a car on a hill overnight...

I know this for a fact, because of a mates car the went for a roll down a hill overnight because he used only the hydraulic handbrake...

Hey :gay:-wombat I've been thinking of doing this in the dat for driving events. the good thing is I can keep the original under dash 'umbrella' cable handbrake for legal reasons. Then have a tunnel mounted hydraulic version!
Maybe we could rig up two handbrake levers in your 'rade!! don't forget which is which!
You can get them from Autosport on Magill Road, couple hundred bucks I think they are... I'll (try to) make one myself :)

PS - u are :gay:

a hydraulic handbrake is just that, a hand operated brake. it is NOT a park brake, and it is NOT an emergency brake. You need to get the whole park brake thing out of your head when talking about hydraulic handbrakes. thats why they are illegal without having a secondary cable operated emergency and parking brake.

An emergency brake is a SECONDARY braking system completely separate to the main braking system, so that in the event of a brake failure such as fluid loss or front pads wearing to the point the metal back falls out of the caliper (yes it can happen, ive seen it more than once!!! ) you still have half a chance of slowing the car up by using the emergency/park brake.

this was subaru's logic in putting the park brake on the front calipers for so many years. (although, that had it's own problems :D)

In NSW they are illegal EVEN if you have the standard h/brake. I still have my old one from when my car was a motorkhana car but I took it out cause it weighed too much hehehe

If you ever fit one they must be.....I know everyone knows this......a fly off setup....i.e you can't lock them into an "on" position.
