What motor 2ltr and 2.6 will fit a 4spd box in a GC galant thats currently got a 1600 infront of it...
would clutches need swapping or anything like that or can you just take the 1.6 out and drop in astron...i dont know this stuff cos i did my conversion motor and box together...
also does a jap 5spd fit in on a stock 4spd manual galant crossmember
the crossmember is the same between jap 4 and 5 sp, but the rear mount has wider bolt spacings for the 5sp where it mounts to the gearbox.
GE 2.0L will fit the saturn 4sp, as will the GH-GJ auto (I think....) there is two top bell housing bolt spaces, some gearboxes have the 2 holes to select from, some dont, so measure the 2 top bolt holes before purchasing the engine.
the galants, lancers and sigmas are so old now, it's no guarrantee a GE has a GE engine in it any more :p

dont suppose you could give me any engine numbers eh secoh?:D
As for bolt hole differences
Now i just measured the top bolt space on my two door(2.6 and lancer 5spd) and my car 2ltr and BW 5spd and they were the same...what the hell does that mean?
the big difference between the GH BW and jap boxes is the LOWER bell housing bolt spacing. The only difference in the bellhousings in the jap boxes is the TOP bolt spacing. (and gear lever position, but thats another story :p)

DAMN...i would realy like to catch up with some mitsubishi engineers and 'tell' them how i feel about there model 'changes' and tell them what i think about there 'balance shafts'....

Karl just be glad that they do bolt together. It'd be pretty shitty if you were stuck with a Saturn motor hey!
The Galant/ Lancer 4 speeds need to have 3 bolt holes in the top in order to bolt to the 2.0/auto 2.6 blocks. I am just rebuilding my 4 speed (only 3rd gr synchro stuffed after 2+ years of abuse!) and have found that GA/GBs have only 2 bolt holes and that later galants and Lancers have 3 bolt holes. This is only a theory as I am summarising from the handful of boxes I have.
hope this helps. I'll take a picture tomorrow of the bolt holes.
I'm also not too sure about balance shafts being a bad thing.. but I wont start a rant.

MrBishi, I dissagree, Saturns can be good! When was the last time you saw a twincam Astron :) :D
and don't get me started on those bloody balance shafts... :( :(

ahaha...well i ripped the 2.6 out of my two door today...its all ready to go into mine :D yay 2.6ltr....hello to an extra 10kw and 50nm of torque :D(over a factory 2ltr)
heheh The saturn is my favorite engine of all time to play with, mod, work on and drive hard! I wish I still had an excuse to mess with them...:(

Damn that cam out wrong. Saturns can be great but stock they are not very much fun. i wanted to put one in an old 60s Colt fastback I looked at once. Front leaf suspension put me off though
HoonB - Saturn twin cam falls into different category. You bought a 16Valve head yet?:) And I can too get a twin cam head. Just don't feel like selling everyhing I own and then some to obtain one. I reckon my lancer will be faster than yours though:D Nothing to do with the bolt ons though.
Karl here are the bolt patterns I was yammering about.

hehe i actually drove a 1600 4spd GC the other day and was suprised how well it went :D
But damn....they would be good to mod, cos the motor is just low rev torque....id love have one of them with twic carbs and all the goodies hauling around at 8 grand :D

MrBishi, yours may be faster, but I'm going for the fastest saturn twin cam LA Lancer in Aus :D shouldn't be too hard, if the website's I have found are correct they only made 850 of the engines. Maybe I should sell it back to Japan and go for the 3000GT engine :D :D

hey karl, i didn't know that the 2.6s had an extra 50nm of torque over the 2.0s! i always just compared the kws and thought ah well if i get a 2.0 it won't be that bad. but every week i scan the trader for a 2.6 sigma auto with a good motor and yet every week is another dissapointment :( i got jap 5 speed though wich has only done about 130000ks and is in really good nick all for the sum of $75 :D sorry i can't help ya out with the gearbox/motor thing mitsubishi confuesed you just as much as me ive got the basic idea of what will fit what, but half of it is just measure and shoot ;) catchya
in completely bog stock form the 1600 saturn SOHC single solex will rev to 8000rpm (no power, but they'll do it!) and when the rally car's 1705cc engine spun a bearing a week before the next event, i whacked in a stock 1400cc, swapped the No.5 cam in it and twin down draught solexes (PRC, cant run non-stock carbs and exhaust).
During the event I f*cked up a spectator point, nearly bogged it in dust, so just kept the hammer down and managed to get it out...then a couple hundred meters up the road it suddenly felt flat and there was a godawful rattle...I looked down at the tacho, and it was doing 9200rpm and valve bouncing! oops :D:D:D
That engine went into a stock lancer my bro drove with no probs for 2 years too...heheh

secoh 9200rpm....sounds like fun...the 2ltr starts valvebouncing at around 6500-7000 gets this horrible sorta shake going....
well the BorgWarner box is going...in the last two days the gearstick has came out like 10+ times....thats what happens when someone other than me drives the car....grrrr
its like 12:30 and ive been up since 6am and working all day....just got the 2ltr stiped down(all manifolds off and all connections to car disconnected....just gotta rip tailshaft and crossmember out and shes ready to go!
And im meant to be delivering for the chinese restuarant i work at tomorow at 5:30!!!!! Im just praying that this 2.6ltr and 5spd dont have any majors problems i havnt found out yet....otherwise im REALY screwed!
ANyone have any ideas whether the BW speedo cable fits the jap 5spd...cos theres no way im pulling the dash out
this is reallyt dredging my memory, but i think the gearbox end of the cable is different, but the dash end is the same....

Correct :D
Any ideas why my gear stick feels extremely loose...like can jiggle it around heaps when in a gear or neutral?

Coz it's probably about to fall off...... :p
No seriously check the bolts that hold the gearshift in place as mine were worn to the point where there was no thread left at all. I found this out when I went to grab second gear and the shifter came off from the gearbox completly leaving me stranded in neutral with no way og getting it in gear!!! Managed to dodge up a fix to get me home though...
yes, the gear lever pivot inside the base of the lever is a bakelite ball, these usually go brittle with age and fall apart. either find a good gear lever second hand (good luck), buy a brand spankers from mitsu ($80 last time I priced one) or just buy the bakelite ball and have someone with a vice change it out (only a few bucks last time I got one).
no big deal, it'll shift ok, it'll just feel like a wooden spoon in a bowl of porridge (same as every subaru!! hehe), but they feel awesome with the new pivot bush in there.
There is also a nylon cup that fits on the very bottom of the lever, make sure this is in place also. these are like $2 from mitsu if its missing.

heheeh i have hight tensile bolts holding mine in :D
Secoh....the bush...were is it?
take the 3 gear lever bolts out and take the gear lever out. hold it in your hand. turn it totally upside down. right at the very end there should be a white nylon cup arrangement that sits on the very end of the lever, which is shaped like a metal ball. if the nylon cup is missing you will just see the metal ball.
if its missing, look in the gearbox gear lever hole, it may be in there, but usually its gone for good.
Also, with the gear lever in your hand and upside down, look where the big metal cup shaped plate the lever passes thru, in there should be a bakelite pivot. (i doubt it, theyre usually stuffed). if its missing you'll just see a metal pin that holds the lever inside the metal cover.
there should be a steel plate with a vague L shape cut out of it that fits between the gear lever and gearbox. if its missing or chipped, this can be why you have trouble getting gears, or find reverse instead of 4th. oh, and theyre different between 4sp and 5sp.

Secoh...you are a CHAMPION!
Well ive got that little cup(slightly damaged...but i dont see any of the other one....
And after a bit of driving im thinking the clutch is pretty worn....how much moula would i be up for that...also 3rd gear grinds when fanging...but not when takin it easy....what the prob there...syncros?
if your doing the clutch yourself it wont be too exxy. the clutch kit is fairly cheap for sigmas coz theyre so damn common (or were).
what gear oil did u put in? its prob the synchros, sometimes running 50/50 gear and engine oil , all engine oil, or even a drastic mix of 50/50 engine and auto fluid can make it shift better.

its got penrite light gear oil....its 80W-85

I just put a new clutch in mine. New daiken press plate and clutch and machining my flywheel was $180. The only downside is the pedal is now rediculously light (maybe because before I had a button with HD press plate:D )
I don't know anything about the bakelite ball (must look into it) but my white plastic bushes only last about 6 months. Give you any idea as to the caning it cops? without complaint I might add!

also the motor has a strong virbration over 3 grand...ive been told either the flywheel is out of balance or that the balance shafts are not installed corectly...any one had expeirience with this?
could be either, although if the balance shaft is not fitted correctly it shakes like a chuiaua...:p you really know about it at revs...

this could be it...cos i REALY know about it...i though i might have abusted uni joint(again)...but ass soon as i slip the clutch in (revs drop) the shudder was gone...shudders in any gear(and neutral) at revs about 3....i havnt realy seen more than 4 grand as car is running realy lean(waiting on jets fr weber) coughing farting ect...though still hauling ass!
actually mate that sounds more like an engine misfire. do a compression test and check all the plugs and leads....

umm ive bought plug but havnt got around to putting them in
and the leads are the ones came with the motor..there good leads but in rather ordinary condition...ive got about 3 spare sets si il give them a go...thanks alot :D
and i fixed my carb a bit..changerd from 127 primary and 132 secondary to 132 primary and 140 secondary...though i reckon i oculd probly go up a size again!

also noticed when engine is idling if the clutch is in it is quieter.....also when rolling to a stop in nuetral with engine off i can hear this click click sound which the speed of the clicks is proportional to the speed of the car rolling.....maybe a realy out of whack flywheel???
