Performance Tyres

I had just bought a set of tyres for the sx with all 4 being 235/40 in the bridgestone re540's. They are not the nicest to drive on the road because they are rough, noisy and feel heavy to steer with, but being a competition tyre i expected that, and i was after one thing and one thing only and that was grip. And oh my, they grip the road like nothing i have ever experienced. Amazing. Just seeing what you guys were using as a track tyre and what you views on them were as far as grip and wear and general value for money. Has anyone used the yoky advans, p-zero corsa's or falken azenis???

You’ll get used to the noise and comfort things, it took me about 10 minutes. Problem is that you won’t want to drive on normal tyres anymore! It’s not just that the ones you now have cost more, it’s that they need replacing at least 4 times as often!

My current tyres are Azenis. They are a compromise between a proper street legal circuit tyre like the 540 and a normal road tyre. Yogi on here was saying the other day that a new Azenis is being released that is a bit more “hardcore”.

I’ve also used Dunlop D01J and Yoko A032R. I’d rate the Yokos slightly better in the wet, with the Dunlops having the edge in the dry. Both are similar to the 540s and way above the Azenis.

Don’t expect your 540s to cope at all well in heavy rain. Wet roads should be fine but they won’t handle standing water.

Also realise that things like brakes and driveline components are being worked harder now that you have some grip. In a Subaru, that means wheel bearings!

I'm always after a car that handles well and tyres are a good step in that direction. The 540's in the wet are actually quite nice compared to the standard re010's that were on it. But what i noticed is that the tyres are VERY dependent on how much heat are in them. I could imagine that they would be leathal in the wet if you were cruisng around in the city and not getting much heat in them. But once operating temp is there, they are good. But on stading water, yeah aqua-planning is an expected thing!!!!:D
I was looking at the falkens but grabbed the brigies instead only cause i could get a better price on them. I'm really interested in the p-zero corsa though. How many k's have you been getting out of your track tyres???
