As this question may suggest, I know sfa about electronic management systems.

I am contemplating a SR20-DET for a conversion and I was looking for at least 200 rwhp and maintaining as best as possible stock drivability.

Is it better to get engine and gearbox without the stock ecu and fit an aftermarket ecu such as Haltec or Motec? ... or is it better to retain the standard ecu and get some guru to reprogram it?

It all depends on your budget really....

To get 200hp from a SR20 det, is not that hard, its just a matter of boosting it up, with exhurst n front mount and u can still run the standard Ecu....

If your thinking of going for a computer such as motec, Haltech, and so on, it all depends what mods you want to do in the future, such as bigger turbo n etc, then its will be best if you have an after market computer,

But if you only chasing 200hp at the wheels, then a stock Ecu will do the job or you can just remapped your stock ecu.

There is a fellow, BadBiki, on the nissans13 yahoo group that makes daughter boards, that are programmable to an extent, that interface with the standard ecu.

If you check out that forum, you will find the info you are chasing.

I would agree with the previous advice, if 200rwhp is all you are chasing then there is probably little reason to go to the expense of aftermarket ecu, unless you plans change for the future.

I think the daughterboards are under $150 and can be installed yourself, or by someone relativelycompetant in electronics.
