I'm planing on upgrading the brake system on the old Hilux. The ute will be towing the old mans boat every now and then (1500kgs) so i want my ute to be able to stop and i like to have brakes and most of the brakes are stuffed anyway so i might as well spend a bit extra and fix them now.

its a 1986 2WD ute.what i want to know is

*can i use 4 piston calipers from a 4WD.
*if i do use 4 piston calipers do i need 2 change the master cylinder to a 4WD one
* can i convert the rear drums to discs easily
*if converting to rear discs is too hard can i use later model hiace drums.
*i had a bit of a look at the DBA web site and it looks like later model Hi ace vans had bigger discs. does anyone know if these will fit.

im changing to 15" maybe 16" rims as well

thanks in advance

possibly with some sort of adaptor(spacer)

no but you might want to remove the residual line valve so the brakes don't lock on

* can i convert the rear drums to discs easily
nothing about this project will be easy

*if converting to rear discs is too hard can i use later model hiace drums.
pass

Over to you steve

Check with castlemain rod shop they may have done something with improving hilux brakes. Couldn't hurt.

I have converted a Hilux rear diff to discs. Not too hard at all.
Go here for the "how to". Article isn't quite finished but you'll get the drift.

dave,

that is a excelent article. i would never have worked out which bits were need to convert to a disc brake rear end, not having any import yards up this way is a pain in the arse.

i eagerly await for the info on the hand brake conversion.

craig.
its a 1986 2WD ute. i dont think the corona conversion will work due do the front end design. the 4 pot calipers will bolt straight on so im told. the only problem i have is will the master cylinder work properly if i change all the brakes.

is there an advantage to running a biger master cylinder?

Mutta, if you just buy complete MA70 rear hubs (not sure where you'd do that in Townsville!), you can use all the components from that on your rear disc upgrade, including the internal drum handbrake. You just need to get a little bit of machining done to make the backing plates fit, and also some caliper brackets made. Any competent machine shop should be able to do that for you.

I can't help you with the front upgrade though.

Cheers Dave
