with regard to the crank angel sensor which direction is advanced and retard clockwise - anticlockwise.

Cams rotate clockwise when looking at the front end. So retarding the sensor is turning it clockwise and advancing it is turning it counterclockwise (ie against the rotation of the engine so that it senses a pulse earlier in the cycle).
