View Full Version : Locked Diff's

I know this topic has been discussed many a time, but I welded my diff up today and have noticed a few things.
Tyre wear - Was ALWAYS aware this will happen
Noise - My centre had MASSIVE backlash previously....now..its gone! :D (obviously...sungears are unable to move as they are welded)
Burnouts - I realised my car has less struggle spinning 2, then it did with the single spinner? :wtf:. Just do a U-turn, to the floor, whips around, use the brake :)
One thing I did notice is the occasional clunk, squeek and bang. I know they put stress on the axles BUT has anyone else experienced this b4?
By the way my car is a TRX with the series 3 diff. (got the diff welded at Micks Metalcraft with MIG.)
Thanks for the help in advance!
IT feels so fragile driving around with a Locker, feels like its ready to go any second!

Got my license back on Saturday (8th)..locked my diff THAT morning and i've never looked back :D
You just need a few sets of shit tyres to throw on, coz it chew's through tyres like nothing else....
Just remember not to dump the clutch...do a U-Turn and just deck it! Once you get rev's, throw it round like ya stole it :D :D
It makes some bad noise, and you'll think ya cars on really rough rails, but its worth it!

np ive just gota get them out of the shed. when do you want them for?
Do u have a s3 big axel or small axel diff?
If u have big axel and it is welded strongly u will not break it or snap an axel.
I have seen a few with 200+ rwkw and they last ages.

Big Axle ;) MIG weld done at Micks Metalcraft! All the welds are supported of each other, so if one breaks, another one can hold it in there for a while at least...

I need a set for the street meet on Wednesday night. Can pick them up anytime! (Wednesday preferably)
Are they those FUGLY alloy rims???
be careful not to slap it into a gutter in the wet
Been told this MANY a time!! :D:)
Anyway, b4 you weld the centre, always go and purchase yourself a spare centre in case she doesnt turn out the way you want it. My centres only cost $60 from pick & payless. Might do some good also purchasing a few axles ($15 each)...

What happens if you snap an axle? Will it pull to one side HEAVILY like a when an axle in a mini spool breaks? Could be dangerous if an axle snaps at 100kph!

it will just cook the opposite tyre :D

axle won't snap unless under strain... so no snapping at 100kph
and you'll hear it about to go - makes nice strained metal noises and the diff will be noisy...
the last axle i pulled out was in 4 pieces :D
just be very careful in the wet... very very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing ;)

btw - i've only ever torn a weld out of a locker once.... but its possible... and when that happens, the diff will drop its guts...

Urgh, definitely one of the worst noises in the world, especially when it happens to YOUR car and you know something is about to give way :)
Been in many cars with lockers, driven one, and I'll never EVER have one in my car...waste of tyres, axles and too dangerous IMHO

I snapped an axle overtaking at 100+. Car down changed and went boom! No noise before hand! Sheared clean in two!

/RANT/
I'm sick of reading about how dangerous cars with lockers/spools/mini-spools are.
What makes them anymore dangerous than a LSD? For that point why is a locker any more dangerous than a open-wheeler, which will decide to deliver torque to both wheels at the most in-oportune time (read with the right wheel doing 100 and the left doing road speed)...
I have had both and therefore can make the point that a tight plate style LSD is as noisy and "DANGEROUS" as any locked diff!
Lockers are good, cheap and FUN.
/Rant off/
hmmmm.................
i remember my mate had a lovker in his torana (won a few burnout comps too :D) well anyway, he never really came accross any problems rather than collecting a pile of snapped axles in the garage.
I was gonna go a full spool in my HR but the only thing stopping me was the fact that it tends to do that to axles.
Luckily for me i found a Banjo LSD cheap s i'll chuck that in and find out why the banjo's have such a good reputation :)

Haha I saw that rain and thought about all the people i know with lockers. I dunno why but for some reason Old Windsor Rd is *really* slippery in the rain ive been goin 80km on it in the rain then acelerated and the back end trys to catch up with the front. :D
I can only think of one word to describe welding a diff...
GHETTO!

haha nice pics but i wouldnt be doing them in your own street.. thats shitting on your own turf...
I had a welded diff in my series3 TRX (also had 4-1 extractors, 3" exhaust (dont ask , previous owner) after centre muffler to 2.5" pipe to rear of car, sounded awesome, revved hard.
Standard carbie, cut springs and a welded standard diff (10 bolt carrier and 28 spline axels(i think) in series3. Tough diff, mine was welded and i thrashed the absolute hell out of it day in day out for a good 6 months the only thing i ever killed was 1 engine (head gasket, melted piston due to jammed shut thermostat) and lots of tyres. In the end, it ripped the passenger side trailing arm mount from the chassis... Apparantly common in 910 series bluebirds.. if you dont mind shit turning circle and crap parking then a locker is fine... i didnt mind it too much, least you're guarenteed 2 strips each time u pop the clutch :)
Gav
After busting 6 diffs in my S2 Rx7 i decided it was time to try the locker solution. I had it in the car a month and broke an axle taking off quickly, took out the other axle and the end of it was almost twisted off. I then put a single spinner back in it and was sad..... That month was the most fun i have had in the car in the 4 years ive owned it, i think i went through about 5 sets of tyres though.
I found with mine that the car handled just as good as before, and came out of corners faster due to the car not just spinning the inside wheel and going nowhere.
My final word on lockers:
They can be scary in the wet but they are fun in the wet too.
When the diff blows in my current Rx2 i will be breaking out the welder for some twinnie fun.

once u get a locker ull never go back! i got one in the 180 and yes its a handful in the wet (especially with a button clutch) but oh so fun u just have to be carefull and know how to handle ur car! it makes for awsome dragf takeoffs but very noisy u turns and basically any turn, tyres ware out very quickly! but its awsome and i love it!!!

BRING IT!! :D
Anyway, no more locker for me :(
The diff was making some bad noises under acceleration and deceleration. Turns out the pinion in the diff was broken, so everytime the centre was upside down, the pinion comes out and bangs against the crown wheel and pinion gear :(:(
Got a single spinner back in it now, and i'm gonna forget about thrashing the shit out of it for the time being. ;)
