As the title says I am having trouble keeping boxes up to the car I have managed to break second gear once and third twice.
Does anyone know of any options for me to try as I am sick of changing boxes!
The car is a Datsun 1600 with a S13 SR20DET.
AUTO is not an option :D

Tim do you know of any of these being used and proven I was thinking a gear set even. I think the RB25 is a lot bigger in the casing as well may not fit in my tunnel.
Are the FJ boxes strong, such a strange combination a strong box with a weak motor.:D

If you have the cash there is an engineering firm in Sydney who make gearsets for the FWD + 4WD SR20 maybe they do the RWD one to. As for the place it's called PAR engineering.... I think. I've got the number at work but expect to pay like $3000 for the unbreakable set.

What sort of clutch are you using? We find that SR boxes dont hang together without clutches with some give. Hence the whole dual mass setup utilised in the S15 in an attempt to hold the 6 speeder together. In all our mistreated S13s we've never shat a box, and I treated the Pig real bad.

I dont know if its true or not but ive read that S13 Non Turbo SR20 boxes are the strongest of all SR boxes.

That would be a synchro gearset wouldnt it?....it would probably be closer to 5 for a full dog gearset, and less for a half dog..

The whole NA SR box being stronger thing is a fallacy. They are identical aside from 1 gear ratio (5th I think). The NA Boxes tend to last longer under duress because they arent stressed at all dealing with an NA, unlike a Turbo Box. I think if you pay attention to the clutch setup and possibly modify your driving style you might get them to hang together a bit longer. My Pig had a little more grunt than your 1600 and I belted the living sh1t out of it for 18 months without issue - It spent most of its life on the track on the limiter in 3rd gear.

Thanks for the replies everyone keep them coming-
GeoffX-19 - I have thought about this option just the $$$$
Tim510 - changing boxes may prove to be almost as costly as a gearset, by the time I get a box ,clutch [do it up], tailshaft spline and length and may'be modify the tunnel. Crossed fingers hoping it is strong enough. I do not know if that car you mentoined has the horsepower (15mph difference). If he does have it may'be he has not punished the box as much.
C-Red - Good point my clutch is a standard but beefed up by Jim berry (Race clutch) to 2200lb clamp this might be something to look into.:)
Rotor7- I doubt this is true I have heard this one myself I do not see how Nissan would put a stronger box behind an atmo. C-Red summed this up I believe. Do you use your car for drift C-Red.
So far gearset is the go.

NIS016,
My old pig was used for everything, drift, drag, tarmac rallying and general shenanigans. We've got a few S13s with 350-450 running standard boxes with no issues. I took the 6 speed out of my S15 and put in a 5 speed before its even turned a wheel in anger. Of all the S series boxes the S14 NA and turbo are regarded as being the strongest with double synchros on 2nd and 3rd.

What clutch set up and box do you have. I have managed to break two of those boxes on the road.
Gotta go so I will reply next time I am in.

We use a Racing Gear sprung 3 puck sintered bronze clutch with a Racing Gear 2200lb Pressure Plate. Its quite a mild setup but still able to offer enough cushioning so as not to overload the box.

Why not put a nine inch, tub it,90/10s BLAH BLAH BLAH basically I want to keep the manual as it would become more of a purpose built car if it had an auto.

:wtf: I have'nt had the chance to race Mick as it is hard to get a run at willowbank!!! as my car likes to break things lately. His car seems to be geared fairly low not getting big mph for his times but he is getting good times!!! So it would be a good match:D

Might be coming out wednesday for a watch see what happens.
Did you hear their is dyno comp on saturday at Redcliffe dyno and on sunday at Mazfix. Great week to have my gearbox in pieces my diff out putting LSD centre in and radiator out putting in a drain tap. Might do a late one on Friday to get it all back together.:(
I like the dyno days it is a good comparison from car to car, no stories even takes the driver skill and breakages out of the equation.
Good luck on wednesday if I don't make it out there.

NISMOgemini if you are going to come down for a perve why not run your car on the dyno.
What have you got in it anyway?
