sorry mate, new to the forums...thanks for moving it
Id hazard a guess and say the neutral park switch has had the royal order.
Steve
someone has BYPASSED the neutral switch maybe? when they die, the car wont start so people bypass it, then it will start in ANY gear

where is this switch?
dunno on commos. some cars it's on the shifter, and others it's on the side of the gearbox.

so could the fact that the handle on the shifter is a bit loose have anything to do with it?
nahh, the inhibitor switch will be inside the console at the base of the mechanism. I have a hunch that it's on the side of the gearbox on the commodore though.

thanks for your help man.
The inhibitor switch is under the gearstick.
Take it to an auto trans specialist and tell them what is wrong, they should be able to fix it without any problems.
hope this helps.

not a commy. there are two points. one under the shifter and a relay outside in the relay ,fuse panel.
bypassing the relay will do it. ( should be labelled 'inhibit' or 'start')
My dads XF was having troubles starting. It wouldn't start in about 1 out of 4 goes. So when dad said the prob was occuring I done a few tests with my multimeter. Anyway I done the good old screwdriver across the starter motor terminal trick to start it up. But the reason the car would not start this time was becuase my dad had it in drive!!! Anyway the screwdriver trick bypasses the ignition off switch for drive so the car started up and moved forward 30cm to come to rest on my foot. Shit it hurts having a 1600kg XF parked on your foot.

Here is the killer, she started it from outside vehicle...had blown a fuse and were checking lights, the ute started no worries and went through a fence...life is treating us great at moment!
