Because my Landcruiser is the povo pack (but still has air con and power steer?!), it aint got no tacho, and i HATE not having one!! So my question is, who makes them, where do i get one, how much, etc etc. I know they are driven off pulses from the alternater.
Autometer make one......only sold in America and they want $200 deposit to get one over here!! F#@$ THAT!! And they cant even give you a rough idea on when it will get here
so, yeah, precious info would be nice

the tacho on my hilux ute is driven from the injector pump. so i figure there is some sort of pulse system in there.

why the hell would you want a tacho on a diesel?
do you need to shift at an optimum 4000 RPM or something?
:D :)

shinybluesteel, I dont recall TT Celica asking "Do people think I should put a tacho on my diesel?". Can you specify what part of his post refers to wanting peoples opinions whether or not he should put one on?

True, but i dont see the part where he asked to be ridiculed by people suggesting that he hook one up to the non-existant electric ignition system either.
i meant it as a joke, i will now go back and put smiley faces on it to reflect this.
chill dude :)
T T celica, i know you didnt ask for peoples opinions, but in my opinion you dont need a tacho in a stock deisel. (is it stock?)
you could try to hook up a mechanical tacho (sounds hard)
or have some form or magnetic sensor hooked up to the main pulley, (or cam pulley if you can get to it) hall effect sensor for example, which is turned "on" as a magnet goes past it on each revolution, then hook this up to a 12 volt wire or something and have the tacho "count" this.
if they are driven off the alternator, shouldnt be that hard to find a cheapy one.
good luck with it.

drop in the dash from an up spec model with the tach already in it
or go to a specialist 4X4 hot up shop and they should know, if its a late model EFI diesel there will most likely be a tach output wire into the computer or at least in the engine bay somewhere, just hook into that, get a service book for it first tho to be sure.
if its a mechanical diesel then i have NFI, probably fuel pump

go to vdo. they make pwm tachs by the squillions and will probably have something on the shelf in your style and price range. if it is an older cruiser 2h os 1jz it will be alternator driven i think. ask vdo dealer when you ring them.
