Hi All,

My uncle has a E36 318i sedan with a auto box in it. Recently, he said that after driving for a period of time, it loses reverse and first gear (possibly second as well).

He's been to a automatic transmission place, and they said that it was a solenoid inside the box, which isnt expensive, although would still cost about $2000 to fix because of the labour involved in fixing it.

Does anyone have any experience on these, or can recommend any places in Sydney to take it to where it might be a bit cheaper to fix?

If your after a cheap fix take it to your local mechanic or automatic gearbox specialist, being a BMW gearbox it won't make things cheap by any means, might even be easier to swap to a manual even?

Id recommend speaking to a BMW specialst for an honest opinion such as ALS Performance at Haberfield, Peak Performance at Parramatta or Bavariacars which are all highly recognised workshops in BMW circles.
