Hilux tailshaft meets 2JZ-GTE. 2JZ wins.

Am I up for a new tailshaft? I was quoted $650 to have a new one built, but I'd really like to avoid that since this tailshaft is getting turfed in a couple of months when I do the 6-speed conversion.

I'm hoping I can get away with installing a new uni, but considering I drove it for 20 minutes like that (albeit very slowly) I suspect there may be more damage. :(

Whack a new uni in and see what happens. Unless you can see evidence of damage to either yoke or a bent shaft I think you should be good to go.

$650 for a new tailshaft is a total rip. I use Gibbs truck parts on the Gold Coast and they have been under a third of that price in the past.

Gibbs built me that tailshaft two years ago and they were great, very helpful and cheap. I'd go back there if I could but getting to the Gold Coast isn't really an option when my car is out of action. :(

Tried Driveline Services? They told me that they could get OE Toyota source uni joints, not Nissan, because my first preference would be Made in Japan.

Driveline Services provided the $650 quote. They're my first choice at the moment because they're about 2 suburbs away, and it's easier to limp there than the Gold Coast!

Why not just take the tailshaft out and send it/take it to someone?

How? On foot? :p

Doesn't take a 2J to do that.

The 18R in the old hilux managed to do the same (don't ask why) and it's holding together just fine with a replacement uni.

Driveline Services at Brendale? Ask for a discount, they gave me a 'car club' discount on some CV boots, good price :)

From the look of it, that uni has a grease nipple in it thats what the hole is int he middle, if this is correct they snap really easy, i done one in my sr only 244 rwkw, you need to put in a solid non servicable type uni really.

You shouldnt be up for more than say $250 for a tailshaft. Theres your tube, yokes welded on the ends then its balanced...

There are other things that affect driveline happyness you might wanna look at too.
Stuff like axle tramp, bad engine/gearbox/diff mounts all lead to drivelines breaking.
Just slap a uni in an see what happens, looks from pic that its the uni joint thats taken the break. Could have possibly been rooted anyways, sometimes the caps on the end can come loose or just not be correctly installed in the first place.

A tailshaft loop would be a good idea too i reckon :D

Why?

Hilux design fault (no centre differential).

Nasty! So what's the count now?? 86 W series gearboxen, 1 diff centre and now this uni?? :)
Surely you'd have another uni or 300 sitting around in your stash. I say replace it and go easy for the next month.

New uni's getting installed this week, the rest of the tailshaft is still serviceable. The centre bearing is a bit dodgy but it should be OK for another month or two. No drag racing though. ;)

Looks to me like a pretty old uni. Sure it wasn't running dry and crusty! That'll make 'em bust every time.

Yeah it was pretty old, the guy who shortened the tailshaft told me the uni's would last "a while" but I should think about replacing them soon. I forgot all about that until 2 years later.

I twisted my tailshaft in the Cressida and shortened it by about 5 cm. I was bloody lucky the transmission yoke didn't pull out whilst I was driving it.

Sydney Driveline Service built me a brand new custom 3" tailshaft with all new Spicer Uni's etc fully fitted and balanced. total cost they quoted was $450+GST

They freight all over the country..
