Subaru Launches Tarmac Rally Attack at Mt.Buller

Just weeks after announcing its withdrawal from the Australian Rally Championship, Subaru Australia has confirmed a new factory backed tarmac rally programme in 2006, starting with the Porsche Mt.Buller Sprint from January 26-29.

2005 Australian Rally Championship runners-up, Dean Herridge and Bill Hayes will take on the Porsche 911 GT2 of reigning Mt.Buller champion Jim Richards and a record 138 other competitors in the challenging timed blast up the 16km long Tourist Road to the Mt.Buller Village over the Australia Day Long weekend.

At this stage the West Australians’ Mt.Buller weapon is expected to be one of the Subaru Rally Team Australia’s (SRTA’s) current Impreza WRX STI ARC cars converted to 400HP/1350kg tarmac rally specifications.

Subaru Australia’s Managing Director Nick Senior said while he expected Herridge to be competitive, the team was not going to the event that has been dominated by Porsches since its inception two years ago with any real expectations.

“We’ll be taking a low key but professional approach through SRTA,” he said. “However there will be no big team pantechnicons and no fanfare.”

He also confirmed that Subaru’s Porsche Mt.Buller Sprint entry is not a one off, but part of a limited programme of tarmac events in 2006.

“We’re also looking at Rally Tasmania and Targa Tasmania, but no final decisions have yet been made,” he said. “Principally, 2006 is a development year.”

Herridge is well-prepared to become a top tarmac driver. He and Bill Hayes wrapped up the runner-up spot in the 2005 Australian Rally Championship in the final round at Bathurst, finishing behind Victorians Cody Crocker and Dale Moscatt and ahead of Toyota’s Simon and Sue Evans.

Crocker’s victory was the 10th ARC title in a row for Subaru, but in tarmac rallying where Porsches have dominated since the mid-1990s, Subaru’s only major success to date has been the victory by privateers Tony Sullens and Julia Rabbett in the 2004 Targa Tasmania.

“Dean Herridge in a works Subaru will be a real threat, that’s for sure,” said Jim Richards, who with regular navigator Barry Oliver will be defending their 2005 victory in his two wheel drive 540HP (400kW) 2004 model Porsche 911 GT2. “Those little cars are made for this sort of thing.”

The entry will also be a major distraction for Tasmania’s John and Justin White, who have their eye on Jim Richards’ crown in the ex-Lamborghini Australia V10 four wheel drive Gallardo.

However leading Mitsubishi Evo competitor Jeff Beaumont, is not so sure.

“Four wheel drive is quicker up the top of the mountain where the course gets tighter, but in the earlier faster section, there’s still nothing to touch a Porsche if it’s dry,” he said.

Not surprising, tarmac rally > dirt rally for general appeal and participation. Won't be long before they start getting some decent media coverage too.

What they should do is include some tarmac rally in the ARC IMO.

But good to see Subaru back in Aus motorsport.

two wheel drive 540HP (400kW) 2004 model Porsche 911 GT2.

Didn't know Jims car had that much stick. Must use some damn good tyres.

I would wager that Jims car could have a few more ponies than that as that is the stock power figures for the Gt2 and we all know Jim likes to tinker with porkers ;)

Errr... I don't think you know why they've gone to tarmac huh? It ain't about "general appeal and participation". It's about politics.

Well, looks like the Tasmanian organisers have confirmed in their latest newsletter that the N and N(P) cars won't be allowed to run, following complaints from fellow competitors. So maybe only Targa West and NZ remain as options (a Subaru Leone in Classic Adelaide anyone?? :) )

If Subaru Australia's budget stretches further afield maybe these sort of invites will be forthcoming:

I guess the Tasmanian Lamborghini agents would be keen too.

From day one its's been about "Winning On Sunday" and "Selling On Monday" for Subaru. The more categories they win the more sellable their brand becomes, hence their entry into tarmac diciplines. SILLY and DISAPPOINTING in my opinion because they would have continued to benefit from gravel involvement in the showroom (with the cult WRX, B4 buyer etc) and there is a fairly high possibility that tarmac rounds may be introduced to the national championship in the near future. It's also highly probable that they know certain things regarding Oz's rallying future and have shyed away from the ARC for different reasons other than just for overall profit (well it would be nice to think so don't you think??!!!! ).I just wish the championship had such a powerful manufacturer remain with it, for it's longevity. Anyway there is much more to it ofcourse but that's just my 2second rant :D

There's a lot of political maneouvring going on in rallying at the moment, Richard...

Do you think that stuff like this (http://www.rally.com.au/home/latestnews/articleid=1862) is just for new manufacturers? Or do you think that it might have something to do with a Mr. Crocker running in a Subaru Satellite team, and extracting money out of Subaru...

There's a lot of people unhappy with how bits of rallying are being run. And it's starting to cause a lot of friction.

I'm trying to track down the text (or a copy) of the newsletter GXXR mentions... it certainly foreshadows some (more) interesting politics coming into play.

I hadn't seen that.

For 15 years I went to at least one ARC round every year. This year was the first I did not attend a rally (even at state level) and I don't think I'll be going to one next year either.

An overseas round of the WRC is looking good but rallying in Australia died with a lovely man from New Zealand as far as I'm concerned.

The Targa newsletter is also available online:

http://www.targa.org.au (www.targa.org.au)

stuffed if I can link past the opening page, , so > News and Media> Targa Tasmania Newsletters > Dec 2005.

Had a quick look at Rally Tasmania and no entry shown as yet for Herridge, so maybe Tony Wright has adopted the same approach.

It also appears the Canadian adventure is off unless that Cochrane and his cronies can be convinced otherwise.
