View Full Version : Where To Find/Buy 2nd Hand Semi Slicks / Slicks?

Well, being the tightarse that i am and not being able to afford a brand new set of semi slicks/slicks, i'm looking around for a 2nd hand set to run at sprint days etc this year.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any people/places to speak to (Preferably in Brisbane, though its not THAT critical) that may have some that they're willing to part with for reasonable prices, as i don't have a huge budget to play with?
Sizes i'm looking for are around the 205/55/16 sort of area (for a 6.5" wide rim, so slightly smaller or larger is okay as well)
Thanks in Advance
Jason
Contact Tyretech, they maybe able to help out.
Jason, a few guys tend to hang around the tyre truck at State Rounds and claim any decent discards - the tyre blokes are happy to give them away as it saves them from dumping them !!
Some of the frontrunners throw away tyres after each round so it's possible to get some decent rubber, some with say 50% left is not impossible... ;)
If you put 15's on i could send you all my second hand stuff... :)

1) Goto local motorsport event
2) Stare at people wheels and tyres to compare sizes
3) Scavenge/ get hugely discounted rubber off 'fast boys' who only use tyres for two heat cycles
4) ???
5) Run faster times
Fatboy - what size? 205/60R15 I'm guessing (which is too big for my car :( )

You won't get 205/55R16 in comp rubber because it doesn't exist.
Start asking for 205/50R16 and find out where the WRX boys with lots of money and no sense hang out.

What do you reckon the chances of finding some 195x50x15 tyres at the motorsport events?
Cheers

hrm, the QLD IPRA runs a 'Yokohama controlled tyre'... anyone know what tyre this would be? They've got a meet coming up in about 2 weeks time that i might go out to... or are these guys not likely to throw tyres away? :P
Fatty, Can you send us up 4 farked ones. I need some old boots just to roll the capri around on...yours will be the right size roughly for setting the ride height etc
ahh, fark it, I'll send you a Pm

Yep, they be the AO32R's. Trouble is that they have to run a 60 profile tyre, unless they are a modern. Not many moderns that run up here. There is a Rex though which may fir the bill.

to be honest, it doesn't really bother me what profile they are, as its going to be for a second set of rims that will be used on the track only (i.e. have a set of street rubber on seperate rims for driving there/back on)
only difference the profile would make is to speedo readings etc would it not?

unless you will have clearance issues... and if it is changing the overall diameter, if you want to be pedantic will bugger with your overall gearing as well.

clearance isn't going to be an issue i wouldn't think... there's a bit of clearance between the guards and the 55 profile tyres that are on there at the moment.... by bugger overall gearing, you mean its going to lower/raise top speeds, speeds in gears etc?
Larger overall diameter makes the gearing taller. A 205/60/15 is a big fark off rolling diametre, hence the big guards on the RX7's and the like.

Don't get too excited by second-hand slicks, they're usually rooted.
They can takes many laps to wake up, and when they do they still don't stick all that well.
Worth a try if you can get them young enough though.

i realise that most of them are going to be past their prime, but they would still be better than alot of street tyres, would they not?

Maybe.
A lot of people think that just by bolting on a set of slicks their car will be faster. Not always so - They require different camber angles, and often will stand far less camber change in cornering/braking than road tyres will.
So whilst they'll stick, they may let go quite quickly and so feel and work terrible.
Haha, Guido bought my old slicks & I think they were ok for a little while but they turn to sh!t pretty damn quick.
Jase, With slicks (not R spec radials) you are not so much concerned about how worn they are but how many heat cycles theyve done. If you had a good day at the sprints & got 5 or 6 runs then the tyres have 5 or 6 heat cycles & are 90% knackered. This gets a bit expensive.
Given that the keys to the sheepstation arent jingling in your face you would be better off going out buying a new set of R spec radials & running a years worth of sprints.

For economy, Silverstones would be good, they perform and last well from what I've seen.

So would one extended run (the equivalent length of 5 or 6 sprints) be one heat cycle, or would it ruin your shit the same as those 5 or 6 sprints?

Interestingly... the IPRA regs seems to have just changed so the new(er) A048 is now an option for them. So possibly you might find some people moving to the new tyre and having old ones that are not *quite* farked. It seems they are still limited to the 60 series profile.
The NSW IPRA forum might be worth a look

One heat cycle can last for 2 laps or 20...or more. Its getting hot, then cooling down that makes them go off. Of course if youre doing 20 lap sprints instead of 3 then after 6 sprints the tyres will be significantly more worn but they wont be have 'gone off' any more. Unless you over heated them but thats a different story.
As Edo said, the grooved slicks I got off him were the shiznah. I dropped 2.7 seconds. However the next time I went out I was consistently .5 second slower per lap. I also suspect that a fresh set of "R" rubber would have been as quick to start off with and obviously lasted a lot longer before going off.

Do you think you may have been going slower second time out due to the fact they were down to the belts? :knock:

Hehe, that was the second set off that Datto guy. They were far more farked than the ones I got off Edo.
