Space limitation my friend... can be seen in the last pic.

That's gonna kill your flow.. Turbulence galore.

psi999
27-11-06, 01:28 PM
I agree its not the best, but much better than no airfilter at all.

next time the turbo is off i'm inteneding to have the comp cover spun down to 3", will relieve my space issues.... but for now it should be fine (so far has not caused any issues, inc the 20psi that the turbo produced on the dyno with the old ECU).

No worries dude!.

yeah sold the Autronic SMC, the new Haltech E8 is technically a much better ECU (specification wise).... SMC is actually quite lacking in some areas.

Another 31 that makes mine look like a pile of shit!

Sweet car. I just won an XR6 spec GT3540 on ebay for $1000, so we will have to have a GT35, 3 liter powered R31 showdown on of these days! (no corners lol)

Very awesome!
Should be good once its all sorted. I wonder how the VG compares weight wise to the RB20s, its so short and low!
Way neater than mine outside too.

psi999

Floody – Cheers mate & as for engine weights, I’ve been told that a VG30 is actually lighter than a red top RB20 by a bloke that’s allegedly had it on a scale (he has a VG30DET powered S13), it sure is a lot shorter than a Rb20 though.

2JZR31 – Cheers, I would not mind checking out yours as well.

That turbo is going to be FANTASTIC on your 2JZ with the ford 0.50 front cover. My version which is identical (bar 0.70 cover for a bit more top end) has very little lag.

I was actually quite surprised how little given all the negative feedback I received stating that it was way too large for a street car – I think a combo of a light car, big motor and decent BB turbo has overcome much of the lag issues others thought it would have.

You have made the right choice & I’m keen for the 3L R31 showdown at the bank of willows…. Have you got plans to install cams etc as well?

We will have to organize a few people to head to willowbank one of these days. ATM, my plans only include the turbo, and a rising rate fuel pressure reg. From many reports this should be good for over 300rwkw. I will see how it goes from there.

Yeah I'd definitely believe that regarding the weight. IMO the RB20's really pretty overbuilt and very space inefficient for a 2 litre six, the V6 is a thoroughly more modern bit of gear.
Should be nice and balanced.

Is the HICAS stuff gone from yours? Interested what they did to lock the subframe up if it is - I'm going with either alloy spacers or Urethane bushes.

HICAS has been removed, but i asm not exactly sure how the subframe has been locked up, i'll take a look next time i'm under the car.

Well i bought a spare motor and decided to cut up the stock plenum for the basis for my new forward facing throttle body plenum (with about double capacity of OEM)..... 3 grinding wheels later this is what i was left with.

Decided that reversing the orientation would suit my needs best (as I'll be fabricating a new front section)... the now rear will not require a lot of work.

psi999
29-12-06, 06:32 PM
well decided that the above was a bad idea so have fabricated a whole new bottom section from 6mm alloy plate.

few progress pics, so far the runner holes have been roughly milled at 38mm and will need to be opened up to 45mm by hand (die grinder) so i can get it to match perfectly with the runners, then tapered like the standard plenum.

was at the wreckers yesterday picking up a power steer pump for my Corolla and spotted one of these - Nissan Z32 300ZX RS5R30A gearbox.

This is the same gearbox as i run in my R31 so decided to pick it up for a spare... got it for a pretty good price.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00403.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00404.jpg

This box is pretty much the dux nuts of all nissan gearboxes (stronger gearset than a GTR or RB25 i'm lead to believe as it has a much larger 2nd gear) , 300zx's run 9's on them in the US but i thought it's always safe to have a spare in the shed ;)

You're insane- did you recognise it or the bloke told you what it was?

Tim510 and i stumbled across it, walked in and asked for a price on the Nissan 'Cima' V6 RWD gearbox.... wasnt a commodore or falcon gearbox so they had no idea what it was worth (the wrecker was doing a couple of import motors a while ago but could not make any money out of it so gave it up) :D

Thanks fats, the runner holes are now all out to 45 mm and have bellmouthed half of them.... never again will i make one of these plates.

bigmuz
01-01-07, 04:20 PM
How are you bellmouthing them? Die grinder?

Ya need a mate with a cnc mill- program one and let it go on all of them FTW.

CNC mill would be awesome, as it is i'm going to copy my plate so if anyone ever needs to make one again i can just give the pattern.

Ended up mostly using a hand file as the die grinder was way too hard to use to get the pattern i wanted and way too quick to make a mistake (bell mouth wise).... opening out from 38mm to 45mm dia was interesting, but has paid off as port matching is almost perfect (and way better than OEM).

Here are a couple of pics of where i'm up to, needs a lot more sanding till i'll be happy with it... hope to be getting into it tomorrow with some 400 then 800 grit paper.

Performance springs, as opposed to those shitty ordinary springs.

Running with the best, as opposed to broken down.

Haha well lets hope their springs are a tad better than said artwork.

They could also change their slogan from ‘running with the best’ to ‘running with the cheapest’, were about 50% cheaper than the next set of springs I found to suit my motor.

Supercrown is running a set of springs in his Crown, I hope I have as much luck as him.

Well been at it again, constructed some new intercooler piping as now i have reversed the direction of flow to my intercooler (with the new intake manifold setup) so all needed re-working.

Needs to be welded, but was able to put it together from bits and pieces i had laying about so pretty pleased with the outcome.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00434.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00433.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00435.jpg

Also installed a power steer reservoir from an late Aussie Series III R31, its about 6cm shorter than the import GTS-X so gives a fair bit more room under which was needed. Not concerned about loss in capacity as I'll be installing a power steer cooler shortly

One other benefit of the local setup is the low pressure rubber power steer line from reservoir to VG30 pump fits like a glove, no more shitty kinked leaky power steer feed!... so win win everywhere.

psi999
07-02-07, 10:54 PM
Had another go at the Plenum, should have been welded last weekend but have had to hold off till this Sunday.

This is the basic design

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00143.jpg

with dowels in & lid on (taken from the rear, no pun intended)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00145.jpg

and lid on from the top (bolts will clamp down through dowels, holding the plenum in place)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00146.jpg

Lid will bend over to join the front face where the TB mounts up, I'll make this bend and shape the top section once the bottom is all welded.

psi999
25-02-07, 11:26 AM
Well plenum is off being welded so thought i would tackle the fuel system.

Main issue i wanted to address was that the fuel system would need to run closeish to my turbo exhaust crossover pipe (all shielded but still, i didn't want to take any risks).

After giving it a couple of weeks thought, this is what i came up with (still got a fuel pressure gauge to go on)....

Looks good bud. I hope it is strong enough to stay sealed to the bottom of the manifold with boost.

I'm hoping it should be plenty strong enough, using all the stocko bolts & thicker alloy plate than the stocker plenum.....

Also gunna use a shitload of blue poo & stock gasket between plenum and runners.

She is plenty rigid enough so I'm pretty sure its not going to flex (6mm plate bottom & sides.... 4mm plate rest).... would weight a good coupla KG's.... over engineering FTW :D

EL Falcon thermofans have also been fitted (and old davies craig fans placed in the bin).

Adjusted wastegate (had way too much preload, 20psi boost and wastegate was still not opening).

Painted and fitted new engine covers (valve covers)

Edo:

Was thinking of black but initially but went for clear so I can see what its blowing out the top on the dyno…. Reckon will change to black once its fairly well sorted (twin 20mm breathers is very much overkill). Reckon that catch can will have to go black too…. Once you gone black, there aint no going back :D

Justin:

Am hoping to have it on the dyno within a month, but seeing I can’t drive it at the moment with my busted ankle it may be a little while longer yet…. Will give me a bit longer to make sure she is spot on I guess.

Cal:

Tim510, my mate Dave (electronics tech) and myself…. Came up fairly well spot on (it’s a Haltech E8 & MSD DIS4 (and coils)). Still got a few things to sort out such as electronic boost control solenoid (E8 can map boost to RPM etc), idle solenoid & tap thread for air temp sensor in cooler pipe (already had boss welded on for it).

So all the Latte boys use them Cal? Sweet that should make it easier if I ever use one. I quite like it as bang for your buck option currently (lotsa features for a good price).

Oh sorry and Josh.

Yep it absolutely SHITS on an SMC, good bit of kit for the price.

Can also upgrade it to the flagship E11 v2 for a small price of you outgrow the outputs of the E8..... Functionally the E8 and E11 v2 are already identical, just misses a few outputs which would be mainly used on larger cars with very late model engines anyways.

Nah, the clear stuff is ok...the few blue bits of Silicon sort of wreck it.
Unfortunately no-one seems to do silicon joiners in black... otherwise I'd be buying them for my engine bay. And no I won't use the rubber stuff, not after my recent experience with a rubber joiner falling apart and filling my intercooler with rubber shrapnel!

That’s really only a recent thing though Clayto, probably in the last 6 months…. Have not seen them before that.

Oh for a bit of an update I picked up a 30 row oil cooler setup lastnight, should be here by the end of the week (for me to install on the weekend).

Its good stuff too, ive got quite a few TXS joins at home and the quality IMO would be better than the SFS ($$$) stuff.

nah, it was me :D:D:D you only watched jon and pottered around

cal, i think haltech are the perfect balance of getting options, a good price and good spec.

microtech work well, but are poor quality, and motec is a joke price wise.

haltech slots in nicely

I reckon dont use rubber either...but I had used some other stuff that I got from Purple pig many moons ago. It was actually meant to carry hydraulic fluid (yeah, 3 inch...) under pressure. So it worked fine, it was not proper black though, more just a blah grey brown...ok so that looked a bit crap too.

Anyhoo...clayton is your man:)

Oh good so the advice I got was sound. The other good thing is the rep/tech dude comes to all our race meetings, even in NSW and VIC.

Well time for a bit of an update.

Car is now running with new Haltech E8 & MSD DIS4 so thought i should pick up some gauges for it (Already got an Autometer liquid filled boost gauge so no need to change that).

- PLX SM-AFR wide band sensor and gauge (that will input to the Haltech E8 for full wideband logging / Autotune).
http://www.plxdevices.com/products/dm5/afrsmcombo/dm5smafr.jpg

- Autometer Pyrometer (Exhaust Gas Temp) stepper gauge & sensor.
http://www.rpmoutlet.com/images/aut3344.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/psi999/DSC00510.jpg

Also decided on picking up some cheaper gauges for general monitoring (mounted low in the dash). Ended up settling on the new range of Autogauge electric sender stepper motor warning light gauges after reading quite a few positive reviews.

- Oil Pressure
- Oil Temp
- Volts
- Coolant temp
- EFI Fuel pressure

All from this gauge series:

Next steps are to install gauges, finish hooking up the radiator, general engine tidy up, tune thenhttp://www.jzs147.com.au/forum/images/smiles/peelout.gif

Edit - Also picked up a Blitz ID III Electronic Boost Controller. Decided against using the built in Haltech closed loop boost controller as the blitz should offer far superior boost control for my turbo setup (dual solenoid). Another major consideration was that boost levels will also be able to be changed quickly / easily on the fly & i will be able to access boost related data using the ID III screen

I actually pretty much forgot I owned this car until Sunday, put a new battery in it and tim510 and myself got it running that afternoon.

Took it for a 100km drive lastnight with my wideband and tim510 tuning….. Just light cruise & low boost.

Goes well, have a few little issues to sort out but all in all pretty happy with how she drives.

Probably could have got it running 6-8 months ago, ah well :)

$350 PLX wideaband + display FTW!!!!

if u own a turbo car, u need a wideband! fuck its handy

psi999
21-05-08, 02:04 PM
For $350 (actually even less $'s now) i dont understand why every modified performance car does not run one.

We'll have most of the cruise and idle maps 95% sorted before the car even hits the dyno, which basically pays for the WB unit itself in saved dyno time (@ $165 an hour).

But most importantly i now know the car itself is running well before i pay to send the car off for a tune..... because its now seen the road before hitting the dyno.

Funny how the way the car behaves is often the opposite of how it actually is hey. Like it feels rich and is in fact lean, or vice versa. I was pretty surprised how counter intuitive mixtures can be if you have nothing or just a narrow band to work with.

Wide band plus logging FTW.

tim510
21-05-08, 02:55 PM
yeah certainly takes a bit of getting used to. im keen to cut my teeth on some more stuff, need to get a wideband i can take from car to car. microtech or something similar

I've been looking at the PLX Wideband/Boost/Oil/EGT setup in combination with their OLED displays ... pretty much you can feed the readouts from 4 sensors into a single OLED 52mm or 60mm display and you can daisychain a huge number of displays in series.

http://www.plxdevices.com/

How user friendly is the setup?
