Hey all, okay, the 929, it is a 1986 model, bought new from Mazda by my grandma originally. Then my granded got it and then my dad, now me.
I was silly enough to think it would one day be an amazing performance car and have since then continued (very slowly) to make it more "performancey"

http://www.onthenet.com.au/~ccroft/929.html
I haven't finished writing about everything in the car, I guess I will jsut give you a run down of what has been done to it in simple terms:

Engine:
Stock series 5 rx7 13b turbo and 5 speed manual gearboc (car was a 4 cylinder auto originally)
It has an interncooler and an alloy radiator to
Haltech E6k seems to work fine.

Interior:
not much, two sparco seats that originalyl came out of the Coffin rx2 and a autotechnica steering wheel and some speco gauges. If you are buying gauges, the speco ones are fine in daylight, their lighting at night is carp though.

Other bits: new fuel system and bigger brakes on custom hubs and caliper brackets etc... 300mm supra front discs on the front, series r5 rx7 front calipers on the front, the rear has rx7 series 5 front discs and series 5 rear calipers. I had teh front discs cryo treated too, but haven;t had the chance to try them out either. Tokico illumino suspension with adjustable height cooil overs on the front and some adjustable height ones on the rear. It has a 3 inch exhaust with cat and resonator and a big muffler (8in diameter and nearly 3 feet long) so the car is pretty quiet.

It has actually run, it has done a low 14 at over a hundred mph, was a little fun on the skidpan, but it would have been anyway with the 25 yr old tyre I had on the back.

Gunna:
this is where I am bragging about what will happen:
I have 1000cc injectors on the shelf ready to go in as well as picking up my tial 44mm wastegate either tomorrow or tuesday. Also Mr Turbo is rebuilding the t04b I have for it, it will get a hks 66mm front wheel and .70 front cover, dual bearing billet core and a general rebuild and clean up which I should be able to pick up tomorrow as well (tomorrow being monday the 4/12/06). Also have the exhaust manifold being organised for once it the car comes out of the brake shop, it is also in the brake shop a tht emoment, getting all the calipers and master cylinder rebuilt and the braided brake lines made up. Pads will be ds2500 on the front by ferodo and ebc greens on the rear. Would like to put a cage in it to, have some harnesses there too, but they are second hand and ar elikely out of date now anyway (don't harneses have a 5 yr life or something?)

Differential:
Okay, no one really knows anything about them, so with the brakes, I had to get most adapters custom made as no one could tell us what to do, thanks to Adrian brook for helping with that. For the Diff, that is a special case as well. We got a hilux diff given to us a while back, this may be a replacement...sounds pretty silly though as the car currently has independant rear suspenion, but I am worried about strength and reliability in the future....

The car was sort of worked on by me, little by little, but mostly by mates and my brother, this week is the first time it has been in a workshop for work, so finally work will get done on it quickly!!!! I am not sure if I can remember how many people have had a physical hand in helping with it, as well as the number of people I have talked to for help as well....lots! So i have to take lots of people for joy rides when it gets finished....one day.

I hope to take it to a few track days in the near future and try and keep up with my brothers PRB clubman....hopeful I know!

Yeah, wouldn't surprise me! Hey Coffin, your old seats are still good, the harnesses are on a shelf in the garage though, they haven't been put in yet.

Not much is hooked up to the turbo yet, it needs a fair bit of work at the moment (not just the turbo, but the whole car). Sort of moving house this weekend too.

How many other people have been for a ride in it that read these forums, you even drove it one night at the ice cream shop didn't you coffin?

how much does a 929 weigh?

Chad
16-03-07, 11:06 PM
still too much, was 1280kgs originally, have no sound deadening any more, no seats just sparco fixed backs, and no carpet, and a lot of the old loom is gone, the cabin temperature fluctuation system has had some renovations as well. It may be a little lighter, but it has bigger alloys on it now (16"s instead of 14"S), bigger breaks, intercooler, much much bigger radiator, bigger tailshaft, although it is on piece instead of two now. Be nice to think it was close to 1200kgs though, not not sure at the moment.

So the 929 amazingly enough, still works. We got it started a week or so back and realised we had the injectors installed backwards, so it was running on one rotor (well thats what us elitist's think anyway). Swapped the injectors and then never got it started again. After many minutes of cranking, high load on batteries and lots of reading websites (we can't manage to connect the haltech to the laptop either, we need an old laptop that still has a serial port. No, we bought a USB-Serial adaptor and that fixed nothing) and a week or so later Ben managed to figure out that the car was just flooded.

Buick v6 to the rescue....well sort of. About 10 years ago the family had a boat with two buick v6 petrol engines in it, not sure if they were they same as that of the beloved commodore, but not unlikely. Anyway, Ben used to service the engines (he does work on boats from time to time) and we still had a brand new box of ten spark plugs lieing around for these engines, we found them this week. So two of those went into the leading positions on the old 13b and the car started almost straight away!

58038

The gears still work, some low speed testing on top of the car stands. For the police reading this, it was done on private property, no speed limits were broken here.

58039

Also had another throttle body that we removed the extra butterflies from and cleaned up the insides. Manged to destroy the thread for the idle speed screw almost straight away, that sucked. We also have a leak from one injector still, Might need new O-Rings. Where is the best place to buy these from?

Does anyone have an mx5 diff I can look at for comparison?

Preferably in south east qld? I have a thought that the centers may be interchangeable so then I would have access to an LSD.

Anyone a Mazda diff expert?

rorge

Word on the street is the MX5 1.8ltr diff is the same rear internals as the 7" Rx7 diff if that helps at all? The mounts, pinion and snout are the main differences between the two diffs.

I've got a 2 way Kaaz in mine which is rather nifty!! I saw some website selling decent centers to suit for around $550 somewhere!

Well I have a spare set of alloys for the 929 around the back of the house. I had been thinking for about painting them or getting them powder coated to give the Mazda a sort of different look, I think I am aiming for 80's racer. Could be just making it ricey though, the 929 was never known to be a pretty car.

Getting them painted by a wheel and tyre shop was going to cost $150 a wheel. Wasn't going pay that...ever, especially since I only paid about $200 for the set of 4 wheels anyway. So I gave them all a quick tub with a sponge and some car wash and was left with something like this:

http://performanceforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=58587&d=1342867585

The Centre Caps also needed painting as they started out looking a bit shabby... (Sadly the "We produced with spartan air", is no longer to be seen)

http://performanceforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=58590&d=1342867640

So after washing everything i tried sanding the wheels with 320 grit paper, that lasted less than 10 seconds and I went on to grab some 240 grit paper...this was much better and what I stuck with the whole way through for all four wheels. Ben (The brother) also hit the edges of the wheels with a file as someone had treated these wheels to a little bit of gutter love in a previous life. After sanding the wheels got washed down with some acetone, they still didn't look amazing at this point, I wasn't too worried though. i don't think that the 929 will be a show car anytime in its future.

http://performanceforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=58586&d=1342867585

After sanding them slightly thoroughly (I am lazy) the wheels got hit with a grey primer. I wanted the inside and outside of the wheel painted too so the whole wheel was primed except for the (inners???, the part covered by the tire?).

http://performanceforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=58588&d=1342867585

So after the Primer was allowed to dry for an hour I went on to try painting one wheel (well Ben painted the first one). You can see it on the front left of this photo. I had chosen a flat white, there was an option of a gloss white but I wasn't really sure which one to pick. So after one coat, you can get an idea of what the flat white will look like. The other three in the background were painted about an hour or so later after I decided I was happy enough with the initial wheel. (You will note the rest of the centre caps have had a prime and paint too). As you can see they are still shiny from being wet they look a little glossy, I am thinking and Ben is definitely thinking that we should do the final coat/coats in the gloss white as it will look better on the car.

Who has white wheels and are they a gloss of a flat or a matte finish?

http://performanceforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=58589&d=1342867640

What is everyones thoughts on how the wheels should look? Should I stick with the flat or go on to the gloss? I have to do the second coat tomorrow as it is 16 hours between each coat of the enamel (I bought some kind of Metal paint that comes in a a rattle pack).

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas that will come back to me on this.

Impressed: so a couple of you have had rotary powered HB's in the past? They aren't as rare as I originally thought. Is there anyone on the forums that still has one? I need a rear seat for a 4 door hardtop.

Not bad: Thanks for the comments, brake dust being able to be wiped off, that is a point my brother also made. So I also went to the Gloss after a lot of suggestions. Thanks. I am happy with how the wheels have turned out now. Excuse the mobile phone quality and also notice the blue colouring is the fact that I put an old fish tank bulb in the fluro fittings in the garage, so the wheels aren't really a purpley/blue colour. They have come out alright though I reckon.
