View Full Version : the Sigma of Death (SoD)
When my eldest daughter turned 12, it was decided that some motorsport would be good for both of us :)
Unfortunately, there was no actual budget for this :knock:
Early in life, I was right into Galants and I have owned several Sigmas as well.
So the decision to get a Sigma as a cheap "racecar" was pretty easy.
We found the SoD in the Trading Post close to home at the right price.
It is a 1982 GJ Sigma SE sedan with 2.6, 5-speed, disc rear end and without much rust (at first glance!).

As part of the tidy-up, we pulled out the chrome strips around the windsreens and located a little bit of rust
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/Sigma01_low.jpg
Basically the screen came out with the metal still attached
Some welding and grinding and painting, all good :)

http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/Sigma09_low.jpg
The rest of the prep was rebuild brakes, oil/filters/etc.
Here is it's first event at Ansell Pk (Richmond)

And at its first Khanacross
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/SigmaKhana.jpg
I let my youngest daughter drive it around and this happened :mad2:
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/SigmaCarnage.jpg
A few mods came along the way like donated tyres and eBay wheels plus some better front suspension.

It is already documented here Thread (http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67209198) that the SoD suffered engine failure whilst we were playing :(
Ended up boring the block out 0.060" (1.5 mm) and getting new ACL pistons/rings.
Standard Magna crank was ground 0.010" (0.25 mm) on main and big end journals with new ACL bearings.
All rotating bits were balanced and the balance shafts left out :)
I made a crank scraper and sump extension in addition to using a Magna oil pump (larger gears) to help the oiling situation.
Here are some pics of the reassembly.

Using standard TN Magna injection with a SMT6 piggyback computer - although it doesn't actually do anything at the moment ;)
Wow. You certainly committed yourself to this car didn't you :D
How is that por15 holding up?
Wow. You certainly committed yourself to this car didn't you :D
How is that por15 holding up?
POR15 is magic - although not as shiny now
So at the next 'khana, my eldest daughter did this
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/SigmaSteering.jpg
Then I did this :knock:
Hit a bank at speed and basically ripped the LH wheel off.
Broke the wheel and tyre and bent the chassis :(
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/SigmaLeft.jpg
Put a new LH corner in a few weeks later (had to leave it where it was because we drove it there on a UVP and so couldn't get it home!).
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/SigmaFixing.jpg
Then on the way out, managed to crash again
http://home.exetel.com.au/gaz914net/Pics/SoD/SigmaCrash.jpg
With a lot of swearing and banging and jacking, I got the LH corner reasonably straight. Ended up using the original guard as it was straighter than the replacement!
It's last event was the State motorkhana at Nirimba where I had too much fun :D :D

All up has cost a couple of grand and a lot of weekends.
Best of all my girls and I are having heaps of fun and we don't really care if we bin it :)

Straight bolt-in
I measured everything carefully after I read a post on www.sigma-galant.com and the only difference is the width of the gears internally - ie wider gears = more flow.
Externally they are identical :)

SLO78U came for a ride in a motorkhana at Oran Pk skid pan where I managed to stuff the clutch.
Bloody thing was in the car when I bought it 2 years ago - they just don't last...:wtf:
So the decision was made to kill off the SoD

Seeing a car you've had a lot of fun in like that on the back of a truck disappearing down the street is always a bit sad, and a bit of a relief.
nice read in this thread
shame you wrecked it

ROTFLMAO !!!
your a funny boy Gaz.
he had been round the corner around 30 times before this happened as well !!!
Was a great day until that bit
Bloody cars...
Now I have to pull the bloody diff out again :(
Oh well, it was going REALLY well up to that point and it will be ready for the rallysprint next month.
I'm looking for a good result.
Now if I could afford some new tyres...
cheers
Gaz

i'm sure i could find the time to come down and drink beer and provide moral support !!!

Nah, haven't looked yet, parked it in the carport and left it :)
I'm sure you would drink all my beer and make rude comments - not sure we would get any work done though... :knock:
I will probably have a play on Saturday, when it is a) daytime and b) not 2 degrees outside!
Might take you up on the offer at some point though.

this is the funniest thread I have seen in ages!!
I miss old mitsus. They really did go downhill after the galants, lancers and sigmas.
You really hate the left hand side of your cars huh!
You really hate the left hand side of your cars huh!
Thats the "navigator's side", so it is fair game ;)
The old Mitsus are hard to beat, I reckon.
Cheap as, tough as, and simple to fix
Not stylish though
cheers
Gaz
I only ever crashed my lancer on the left side. Crashing the driver's side is very poor form.
Great thread, are the girls good steerers yet? (I know they aren't good accelerators with only an astron there)

My eldest is OK. She won her class (Lady in a Production Car) class in the 2006 Stae Championship and was the Lady Driver's Champion for Hills Car Club last year.
My youngest will be the best when she gets a bit more experience - she has no fear :oh:
We practised dirt cornering and handbrake turns last weekend.
They are much better at getting the "lines" right now - rather than just "turn and hope".
Best of all, we are having fun! :sandyvag:

Thanks mate, yep cheap as chips and lots of fun ;)

SoD version 2 (SoD II) :D
The green one was looking a bit sad and I bent the LH chassis rail running into a bank, so I had acquired the silver one and it was straight, so I transferred the "good stuff" into the silver one - hence the SoD II
What I haven't done is showed the extra work that went into the silver one that makes it a bit more "racecar" and less "shitbox" :w:
Pics and story will come - one day...

Thanks to Gaz I had a run in a the Hampton Khanacross on the weekend, had great fun on the first run and then Gaz "clipped" a bank on his first run bending the steering. It was taken out and straightened, put back in the car and we ran the rest of the day with only a missfire to contend with in my last couple of runs.
Definetly a lot of fun for the dollars and I can't wait to be batlling against it in the clap!

Yes Jim, it was the left hand side :knock:
