I've had this R31 kicking around for about 5 years. The paint is shot, but the body is straight, the engine is good and the trim is mint. It's not worth much to sell it and its too good to throw it. I have a vl turbo engine laying around as well as a set of vl turbo manifolds to make an rb30e-t but never did it. With my current interest in 2j's i thought I would throw one into this. I have a 2jz-ge engine. Just have to wait until me beetle is sold, then I'll start on it.

Out of sheer boredom I put the slicks from my Galant onto the car, just to see what she'd look like. They fit pretty easy and they are 26x8.5x14 in widened Sigma rims.

I'd start with one in a better nick if I was you. I know you already have it but converted it would be worth 5k. A schmick one would (could) be worth twice that. I won't ever convert a shitter again. It just aint worth it. 2k in value before conversion can double upon sale.

Oh and my mate sold his one before I had even posted it. Without advertising it. For 12k.

Don't I know it!

I have thought about getting a better one, but the paint is the only flaw on this car. Most r31's have the paint/clear coat peeling/cracking/fading already by now so i'd be up for a coat of paint either way. Chuck - you got an absolute gem, specimens like that are pretty rare with 31's.

Might look a bit strange in yellow? But yeah, I wan't to have a shot at painting a whole car. I couldn't make it look any worse.

That's a series 3 R31 (88-90). My one is a series 1/2. 1986 for series 1 and 1987 for series 2) I'll change them to the round hotness one day.

I know it's only paint but that is the hardest thing to get right. Quality job +5k. Home jobs have always looked like them or looked too fresh for the car.

Anyhoo will be good to see this progress. Will be good to see the three PF jz 31's racing together :)

Mucked around with the spare glide I had on the weekend. About 2 years ago, i bought an adaptor plate to suit a Lexus 1UZ-FE auto to powerglide. I bought a 2j auto bellhousing the other day and thought i'd mate it up and see if it fit. I was doing backflips when it all fit up nicely!

Please note the adaptor plate is on backwards. That machined lip is a slight press fit into the bellhousing. The glide is a 6 Cyl version with the removable bellhousing from a HR holden.

Why use the 'glide? There A340 auto can be made very strong and drag capable if that's what your after. Or are the powerglides very strong stock? Excuse my ignorance, I'm not down with old-school transmissions.

RX22NV
18-06-07, 01:04 PM
A few reasons why I want to go with the glide over the A340 ,
- My motor is a 2jz-ge (non Turbo) so I don't have the strong auto or the computer to run it.
- I would like to aim at 7-800hp later down the track
- I want a transbrake
- Powerglides are relatively cheap to build with the parts available can be built for up to 1000hp, I'll be up for a custom made converter though and probably at least a $5k box.

Down side is that the powerglide is the biggest horsepower robbing transmission there is!

I forgot to add, I want to chirp Seconds, so there is no need for other gears! :)

I thought the same... they used bugger all power due to the lack of parts inside

RX22NV
18-06-07, 07:20 PM
All the stories I have heard have suggested that they are. It would make sense though with the lack of parts. Although The Galant went from 350rw hp down with the toploader down to 300 when the glide went in.

Surely they can't be as efficient as the newer A340 boxes etc.

ALLMTR
18-06-07, 07:28 PM
What convertor? The A won't lose as much as it has a locking convertor

RX22NV
18-06-07, 08:03 PM
The plan is to get Dominello to build a custom one for the glide. This will obviously depend on the turbo, but as tight as I can go really. Use nitrous to bring it on the stall and that way it will still be streetable.

The converter will cost $1500 to make, its not cheap but worth it I think.

The galant cruises beautifully on the freeway after Dominello sorted the converter for me. It also was a big factor in dropping the galants times from 11.5 to 10.5.

Yeah Rhys, saw that bad boy. I'll have to leave the expensive stuff like the computer, turbo and box build until the galant sells. Once I sell the beetle (damn thing no one will buy it!) I'll pull the rb30 out, make the mounts, sort all of that stuff out etc.

No eta yet. I just don't have the cash. It would be much better to sell BMW's then sewing machines for a living!

People dont believe me when I tell them I stopped an XY Falcon on a gravel driveway on a 45o angle by holding on the door pillow!!!... I reckon I was 90% the reason you didn't go through the garage into the childcare centre & on the street behind you, but 10% would have to go to the steer job from you brother!!!111 :rotflol:

RX22NV
06-07-07, 02:20 PM
Driving an out of control XY with no brakes, my decision was easy: hit a galant, Hit a toyota Dyna or go for the childcare centre. There's no way I was going to hurt my galant, and the truck would have damaged the ford too much so I aimed it for the back fence and closed my eyes!

Your foot marks went for 4 metres! Next time, I'll at least bolt the steering column in, and make sure I have a milk crate to sit on! I think I have a photo, I'll dig it up. It shows the marks on the floor. Gold!

Made some purchases on the internet the other day. Turbo is a chinese GT45, manifold is a chinese. I don't expect anything from it, but at least it will get the car running quicker.

It's not bolted on the manifold properly. I have to take that crossover manifold to fit it. Its quite large! :) Excuse the phone, its my younger cousins.

Yeah, I'll have to reef the steering wheel pretty hard to get seconds now.

$271+$99 postage USD for the turbo. Ordered on Wednesday, arrived on monday, pretty damn good.

Comes with the gaskets, vband and the weld on adapter for the exhaust.

I am a bit skeptical myself, but I did a bit of homework and there are guys on a US na 2j forum that have made 600+ hp with one of these. If it blows sky high I won't lose too much sleep, but I reckon keep the boost fairly low (15-20) and it should last ok. They did say it was very laggy, but it will do until I have the cash to upgrade.

This one is an XSpower one, i've heard they come from the same factory. I didn't want to spend a great deal on a temporary turbo. I'll get a real Garrett eventually, probably If I sold my galant.
