View Full Version : 'Project grandad' has begun!!
Here is the deal. I picked this mint MX73 Cressida up for a steal, it is a
190xxxkm 1 owner bowls club machine!! The plan is to have a bunch of fun making it do really stupid things the whole while still looking like nan & pops car. (doileys for the parcel shelf are on order) Engine/Trans is a 2JZ auto from an Aristo. Turbo is a Garret GT4082 from a Scania truck with a 1.18 exhaust hsg and 40mm external wastegate. Engine management will be standard with old school HKS extra injector controller for a bit more fuel when the eleventy billion gallons of air flows into the intake! The conversion is well under way and the aim is to have the car ready for the next Powercruise at Qld raceway in September this year. The conversion is being done by myself and JZK25. Anyhoo, here is some pics so far.

Jeez Miles, I'd forgotten just how 'Nana' that thing looks. Especially love the crushed velour interior.
Looking forward to getting down to Al's and getting my hands dirty on this one. Also looking forward to you guys scaring the bejeezus out of me when it runs.
This thread is dedicated to Muz. Keep the Faith. :D
Technically - We cut the mounts off the x member Norbie style and used cruiser rubber mounts with folded brackets welded to the x member. It all fell into place really well and took about 6 hrs from trying to get single spinnarz from the 5ME to bolting the 2J in permanently on new mounts. In hindsight, I wish I had spent more time trying to get single spinnarz going considering the time surplus.
Next up is mounting the GTR mechanical LSD diff and resplining the axles, wiring(once we get the 3rd ecu plug), modifying the ex. wastegate piping, making the 95mm exhaust and the FMIC. Also have GTR front brakes to fit up.(Thanks to Dave at BMI)
There can NEVER be too many 2JZ powered Cressidas.....
I subscribe to Southo's newsletter. :D
i really love this kind of projects.. sleepers ftw
it was my original plan for my applause too, but then i noticed i'm not allowed to do a brake upgrade or any engine tuning (besides exhaust and air intake) cause i live in belgium.. stupid anti-tuning laws :(
Do a good job with this, and i'll be a big fan of you :)
Did a bit yesterday hampered by brain dehydration from alcohol abuse.
Modified the wastegate piping to clear the rack .

The adaptor block has been drilled and tapped but is yet to have the holes milled through it.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/AL_RS/conversions/RIMG0019.jpg
We made a start on the diff fitment. Was a bitch to support without a trans jack. We used an oil stand and it didn't thank us for it.
Cut off the original diff noes support. Stints didn't like his hair being on fire so went all hippy on me.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/AL_RS/conversions/RIMG0014.jpg
Here's the 2 diffs side by side.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/AL_RS/conversions/RIMG0013.jpg
And the rear support we made. Would have preferred to fold something up but this will do the same job. I want to put a couple of braces that go out from the diff bolts to the chassis pins as well.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/AL_RS/conversions/RIMG0018.jpg
Nice work.
That almost looks like a short nose R200...
Could be, it's from an R32 GTR. They go for $550.
Did some more today, Stints' little one was crook so he couldn't come round. Got me out of the diff job so I had a relaxing fiddle with intercooler fitting.

Ran out of 2.5" tube so hot side is incomplete.
The 100mm core fits in with the condenser and receiver drier in place, just had to trim a bit off the grille and under headlight trims. Nothing visible though.
Hey Stints. :) Sorry I couldn't make it to the piss up! But I had waaay more fun moving house!
I sent Al all the info you will need to wire the bad boy up. :)
Holy shit! ..... umm thats pretty much all I can think to say at the moment. :oh:
Please put cams in that bad boy :)
Technically - We cut the mounts off the x member Norbie style and used cruiser rubber mounts with folded brackets welded to the x member.
LOL I thought that crossmember looked familiar!
Nice work on the MX73 BTW, I was going to buy one of these when I bent my first Supra but I found another Supra going cheap.
Wow. You QLD wankers do some nice work.
:D
PS Subscribed.
Cheers for the info off your site Norbie. I looked at the engine bay and thought it looked like your Supra so I printed out a heap of pics and took them into the shed. It all added up except for the variable steering solenoid which we pulled off and welded up :D .
Much easier than making block brackets. I got the folded brackets out of the scrap at my mates work(truck body fabricators), they are cutoffs from the top of a tipper body I think.
I was wondering where you had got to Muz. Not like you to miss a JZ + stupid big turbo in rickety car thread. :D

Didn't get much done this weekend as we were working on Subarus but we got the turbo adapter block back from being machined by a mate. Looks good.

Looks the goods. I'll have to get a pic of BIGMTR on my 2jz to compare and see if that turbo will fit in my engine bay....

Jesus! How old is the bigmtr?
Al I spent the wekend in Sydney with my brother who is a gun tuner of subaru ecus. He works a bit for NRG and we borrowed his 01 wrx for the weekend. Holy shit it was good. If you need to do any remap stuff let me know. He has it all nutted out now. CLEVER ecu.

Lol. I thought Gus was a lump at 14kg(been over 12kg since 1) but BIGMTR owns him.
We'll have to hook up a photo shoot at the next Supra dyno day ALLMTR. :D
Hmm, someone photshop BIGMTR popping a can of spinach into his mouth. Must include anchor forearm tatts and pipe in corner of mouth.
Finally got to have a look at the car with the motor in yesterday. Fark me thats a big turbo. Pictures definitely don't do it for me. Seeing it in the metal its like 'holy shit, it really is a TRUCK turbo'. Nutters, god I love you guys.

Feck, people call my 2 year old big. He's almost the exact same size as BIGMTR!
I wish the 2JZ mafia would stop giving me ideas. This thing should be rather entertaining.
Got some 4" flange plates made for the exhaust and a big truck muffler.
One of the flange plates is to weld onto the exhaust housing to replace the V band that I could not get a matching part for.
I started with welding the internal gate flap shut. I then slid a 3" ss tube down into the exhaust exit path to cover the old wastegate rentry "slot" and give a smoother exhaust exit. The pipe flares out to 95mm where it meets the v band flange. I tigged the pipe to the V band flange and then tigged the 4" flange on to the same place but out a few mm. I got a lot of umms and ahhs from people regarding welding the housing so decided to do it myself with my little inverter tig. The housing material is a good grade steel and welded beautifully.
Pics.

I reckon we should get BIGMTR together with Supercrown for a "bigger is better" photoshoot. At the rate he's growing I have a feeling he's thinking 3.0l is too little. :D

Al you continue to impress me - need more fabricators like you around!
Definately!! If he was local to me there is NO way I'd be doing any fabbing :)
Man when can we come around for a piss up?
Definately!! If he was local to me there is NO way I'd be doing any fabbing :)
Car Carriers are your friend. ;)
Seriously whenever I give him a hand with anything the carpark looks like an all-states car convention, mostly NSW and VIC plates with the odd QLD thrown in to make up the set.
On the other hand, if you possibly can, keep doing it yourself. You seem to have some variations on the how to, and I reckon you are a bit of a talent in your own right. Basically the fabricating gene pool is healthier when you are in it. :sandyvag:
Al's Skillzzz rock though.
Had a go at the dump pipe today.
95mm dump pipes are not easy to fit into mid 80's sedans. Well not so much the pipe but the flanges at each end would not fit through between the floor and gearbox/engine/wastegate/rack/etc etc.
I did a bit of creative reshaping of the 4" flanges we have(cut the ears off it) and it fits through now if you know the correct sequence of rotating and tilting.

I will be interested to know how you go with the factory wiring. The engine is from an aristo? If so any chance of sending me a wiring diagram?
I got the wiring info from Dennis(2JZR31) and he also sent us a wiring plug for the Aristo ecu which he cut from Dan's wrecked 11 sec Aristo(thanks Dan and Dennis, we owe you a beer).

Haha, Miles rang me up on the virgin drive. He seems pretty happy even though its blowing off cooler hoses and only managed to boost to 1 bar. Says he has never been so scared in a car before. Which is a good thing...? Right :D :p
yeh, pissing down rain, boat suspension cheese cutter tyres= puckered bumhole!!!! looking forward to a dry road so i can give it some right foot. at least it's ready for powercruise.
Cheers Miles:D
Hmmm looks like I need a quote
Cressy made it to and through Powercruise(so far) with a bit of fiddling with the wastegate and one of Dennis' fuel cut defender's. The wastegate wasn't opening until ~20psi so Stints pulled it off and took out the spring and chopped a couple of coils off to bring it down to ~16psi.
Anyway, got a text last night that it made 361hp atw on the powercruise dyno. So it is pretty well using up the std injectors which is all we can hope for.
I watched a single turbo (Gen T) LS1 make 354atw so we are very happy and he must be very sad.:D
If I was the LS1 owner I'd be sad too. Mine makes 326 with CAI, edit and extractors
Well I saw a stock turbo 2JZ make 360 on one of the dynos there. But that was probably on more boost and it was a manual. So for stints to make that with 360 with a 4000rpm stall is pretty impressive. I reckon it would have don't near 400 with a converter lockup switch. Which is pretty awesome for 16psi and 440cc injectors!!!
BTW, it goes fucking hard. Thanks to Stints for taking me and Dan around the track on the power cruise. I think we surprised a lot of bogans :p
Pics later :D
We raced Brays burnout car!!! It wheelspun past us :p
That is a fucking great pic!
Here is a bit of a sequence. Was fucking awesome to go up against that!!! He even slowed down and lined us up lol.

How about an update.
Pretty sure you have some 'black smoke' storys to share with us. :)
Must pull like a train with 360rwhp..... My barge of an Aristo with similar RWHP feels quick, yours must be an animal.
Reading this thread REALLY makes me wanna spap my big single on straight away (MP T70, XS power manifold, Tial 44mm gate, USDM 550CC inj, SAFC II, SARD FPR).
Just one question though, stage 1 or 1.5 shift kit?.... and how do you find the 4000rpm convertor? (do you have a manual lockup switch?)
Would this be much lighter than an aristo?

+ cams? ;) :)
I'd say it would be significantly lighter than an Aristo. It is an 85 model and a lower spec chassis at that.
It is a 1.5 shift kit(they don't do 2 on 2JZ's). It shifts very firmly but not uncomfortable. The stall isn't really an issue, it is not noticeable in normal driving in as far as it doesn't detract from the smoothness of the car at all. It is not my car so I haven't tried stalling it up or dragging it and I don't think Stints has either so can't report on actual stall speed. Haven't done the manual lock up switch yet either, will have to get Dennis up for a few cartons one arvo for that.
Notably, Stints has stopped driving the Triton shop ute to work and back in favour of the cressy as it returns 10l/100 and has lounges for seats whereas the ute gets 15 odd and has concrete pillars for seats.
Injectors and management seems like the next step for the car, after the Z32 brakes.

hehehe I just watched the cressida spanks v8 video and laughed my guts out at the hill billy yelling "Fuckin take it home!" followed by silence as the external gated 2j pwns another thong slapper.
Awesome work boys, makes me want to work on my fabricating skills something fierce.
Bit of an update on this thing. The wastegate was too small for it(ebay 40mm). It would hit 1 bar and open the gate and then would slowly climb as the revs climbed. We got another ebay special(actually just jap) but this time a 60mm unit. It's 6omm in and 50 out so I think there sizing system needs review. It's big anyway.
The other thing that needed attention was the back half of the exhaust, we pretty well banged it together in a hurry to get to powercruise(I was really drunk at the time too :D ) and it hung a bit low for my liking. So we redid it post dump pipe and also plumbed the new gate in. Getting 95mm pipe to have good ground clearance on a 22 year old car is no mean feat but I reckon we have it sorted, just requires a heap more sections of bend to follow the contours of the floor and diff cradle. Pics.

march 1st or second i think
Whining in gear(as soon as the box is engaged/loaded). Sounds like converter or oil pump.
Gearbox is deceased atm. Our friendly importer flicked us another one but the MV converter sounds like it has lost a blade so it is just being driven in and out of the shop atm until a new converter/and manualised box are sourced. Gives the kiddies something to talk about when they spot the front mount on it.
The box blew about 10km after the 540cc injectors went in.
Wanna buy a 2J for rebuild Chuck?
Damn I hope my MV 4000 converter lasts OK, but it has had quite a whack of power put through it in Dans Aristo which ran 11.2 @ and has gone 125mph so I would say it should be right. Was mike OK with helping out on price with the new converter and box after his 4000rpm converter failed?
PS did you get my emails about the VF10 turbos?

Mike was good afaik. The box and converter are still up here so nothing can be done till he gets them.
I sent Gary's turbos on monday. Took a while find a big enough box for the two TDO5's.

Thanks a million mate. We will come for a visit after she is running. Hopefully you will be right to drink beers soon again?

It all added up except for the variable steering solenoid which we pulled off and welded up :D .
what is the steering like after doing that ? just heavier when going slow ?
Yep just heavier when slow, same as disconnecting it. We actually had another go at it later and fiddled with the port size on it to get a good compromise.
It's hardly a comfort mobile anymore. GTR mechanical diff plus auto = locked diff most of the time.

hey al,its jason from hervey bay,im the mate of mark with the rodeo.
cressy looks cool mate, would love to see some vids or qtr mile times.
(p.s-have got members rides up of my rx7 that mark may have told ya about.)
Gearbox is broken still.
It's going to MV for a proper build.
Will be at powercruise Dennis, you better be there too.
P.S. We turboed the triton.
You just can't help yourself can you? How does it go with the turbo?
When do reckon you will get the box back?
I am starting work on my car this weekend! So with any luck it will be done in 2 months. But who knows :( I will try to make it anyhow, Gary's soarer might be painted by then.
You just can't help yourself can you?
You know I can't.:knock:
Got a new welder (AC Tig) so had to give it a test run on the inlet manifold. We got a CT26 from a 3SGTE out of the pile and I made a manifold for it but it died quickly, toyota turbos suck. I welded up the hole where the turbine shaft passes thru and banged it back together NA styles so Stints can use it to move house this weekend. :w: We may try and take the allmtr title from the honda crew while we wait for Dave to get me a S5 RX7 exhaust housing to use with the S4 turbo I have(it was second on the list of worthless turbos, we made a bad choice).
Stints hasn't sent the box yet, he has to wait for some coin from his house sale first.
Selling the house for go fast parts. Now thats dedication. :p
Post some pics of the turbo conversions! Did it go much harder?
So this car now has an even bigger fuck off turbo, fully built MV A340 and 4500rpm converter, drag radials and is heading out to the drags on Wednesday. Should be in the running for 10's if Stints get a handle on it in few runs he might get.
That's if he makes it, he's using the dirty work ute to tow it down because he thinks he'll break the hybrid half shafts with the drag radials. I reckon he'd be better towing the ute down with the cressy and see what happens when he gets there. At least he'll make it there that way.
Should just get someone to drive the ute and trailer and only put the cressy on if it blows up.
Drive the cunt down and pay for the tow truck back if it fails. Prolly be cheaper than the fuel and oil needed for the ute to get there.
The tyres turned up yesterday when I was fiddling with the VH/45. He just has to get the spare rims off a bloke in Buderim.
Stinton's skirt got caught in the drivers door so he didn't go.
He is still having speed cut problems, just ordered a proper HKS Aristo SLD so that should sort it. He got a set of old rims and put the MT's on them. They were offset out too far so we had the hub flange turned down 10mm to bring it in. They fit sweet now.
Next wednesday I'll tell him to wear pants so there no chance of skirt entanglement.
lol. Damn that speed cut shit!! 10's next week.

hehe, you SAFC boys and you speed cuts :P
Can't wait to see what this runs. I go past it (or one of the numerous subarus it seems) on my way to work each day.
Hasn't got the overnight parts from Japan yet. As soon as he gets the SLD2 it'll be down there.

More on the turbo triton Al!
P.S have you ever worked on BMW's? I'm starting to get itchy feet with my old turbo e30 and want it back on the road for powercruise next year.
Any pics of this from the Car Classic?
Cmon, you know you want to....
Well i finally got everything sorted. Car is sweet, wedding out of the way, so went to test n tune last Saturday night. Never driven on the 1/4 before so it's a learning curve!!! Did 5 runs in the afternoon, still very hot and started raining at the end of my last run. Best time was a 12.51 @ 119mph. Had a couple of small issues....... Convertor lock up when engaged causes the car to surge and snuff out for some reason????? Haven't thought of where to start with that one yet!! The other issue is I have 10 or so stitches in my left thumb as i tried to cut it off at work on Friday!!! which of course meant i couldn't use the handbrake on the line which in turn meant i couldn't hold it from pushing the the front wheels to get it up to 4000rpm on the stall to make some boosts. Anyhoo, i'll sort it out.....again! and return for another crack at it!
Cheers Miles :D
Another 12 second 2JZ....
Still, you did it with one arm not working eh? ;)
Decent MPH for an unlocked 4500 converter. Seems typical for a first attempt as nothing goes to plan first go. I'm sure you will nail low 11s or a 10 with more track time, a thumb that works and a car that isn't snuffing out.
Check your error codes for the boost cut. Maybe the boost spike from the converter locking is somehow bringing the map sensor reading too high even with the SAFC on -14%.
How much boost are you running and what happens with the boost when you lock the converter?

My first thought was boost cut, the peak hold on the e-boost says anywhere from 16 to 19 psi when i have the convertor locked & it snuffs out. I haven't tried to up the -14% yet but i might do that & try it again on the weekend. I'll just change the 3k to 4.5k settings to -16% on high throttle n see what happens. Makes sense now i think of it, i have low throttle at 80% and high at 99%, if i button off a bit when it snuffs, it comes good again. Fingers crossed thats it!!
Cheers Miles :D

Fuck yeah! twelve fiddies is stout but 120 has gotta be a great motivator for the future..
Stints, the thing is you don't need to guess if you have hit the boost cut as there is an error code for it.
Code 34 Turbo Pressure Malfunction Just go get it to do the cut then check the codes right away. I don't think its a good idea to add more minus values unless you really need it.
Plus 18-19 psi is soft as. Does it go up from there? It could nearly be over-fueling and choking out with such small boost with the larger injectors. I know there is a minimum boost I can run with my setup due to over-fueling caused by the way the SAFC works. At around the max of the stock map senors resolution (17psi) the ECU pretty much dumps a shitload of fuel in, but since our injectors are way bigger, that is multiplied by a ridiculous amount to the point of misfiring and fouling of plugs. So to get it to lean to an acceptable level you need 20+ psi on board. I was running more like 23-25psi on my 125mph runs.
Congrats Stints! This just made 525rwhp @ 28psi with the T78 turbo. Fuckin awesome. Go 2J!

Ten awesomes!
Fark me, thanks for the phone call Niggah.
He was probably feeding saplings into the compressor at the same time, I believe energex uses T78's for this purpose.
lolzer just got an SMS. This and Marks 2J chaser going to drags on 17th. Mini PF meet?
I was hacking on Stinton because I know he's watching. Told me he wasn't doing a power run the mothafucker. He could have at least waited for me to bring a uteload of shrubbery to mulch.

I tried to ring you niggah, but you did'nt answer ya phone!!!!
Went to mates workshop tonight to put the car on the dyno to try & sort out speed cut issue. Ended up sorting it out and on one of the runs under load it ran 506hp at 23psi!!!! So i got a little excited and we strapped it down harder on the rollers and added some more boosts! result as below. I was VERY surprised (& happy) with the outcome. With convertor lock up issue & speed cut sorted i'mm off to the drags again to see if 10's are on the cards.

Well, didn't make it to drags. Went to work at lunchtime yesterday, picked up the car & made it to end of street & auto sh*t itself!!! Not happy!! Drained fluid & found a few sparkly bits in oil. Will be ringing MV's on Monday as this is an uber expensive box built by them & has only done 8,000km since rebuild. It has been on dyno once & to drags once other than that it has been a daily driver so i would have thought that a purpose built auto would last a little longer than that!! Oh well we will see what they have to say about it. I am just happy that it broke close to home!!
Cheers Miles :D
You didn't miss anything, it was a fucking joke. Hours and hours of Fags in stock VN's running consisent 18's. It was tortuous.
Lol Al! I didn't see any of the racing until the staging lanes turned into the bruce highway carpark.
