View Full Version : AE82 Twin Cam cheep track pig
Here we have an average AE82 corolla that was to have been wrecked, but now has been given a new lease on life.
Was bought from a fellow member on here for substantially less than asking price.....
http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67216024&highlight=ae82
Its got a standard 4age bigport with extractors and 2 inch exhaust, so nothing real special in the performace department, emphasis will be on handling and brakes in the future.
Anyway, after lending the car to a fellow workmate who needed wheels for a while, and slapping on another 12mths rego, i finally got to work making the pig a little more trackable.
As it stands today it probably owes about 2.5k including rego till May 08.
Plans are for a nice and cheap introduction to track days starting early 08.
Parts replaced so far include:
Cv Joints
New front KYB Struts (Existing lowered springs seemed rather new)
New Front Rotors and pads
4 new engine mounts
New set of Ebay 15 x 7 inch wheels using existing tyres (Oringinal rims all buckled ,1 odd)
Set of Signature Sway bars (Rear adjustable)
New 2nd hand rear 2.5 inch muffler
New HT Leads, plugs, filters and Oil
New rocker cover gaskets
4 new brake line hoses
Rebuilt starter motor by me
Replace broken Headlight and cracked Grille
Next are plans to gut the interior, replace drivers seat with a better race orientated seat, install an Oil Pressure guage and add some extra camber to the front and rear via adjustable camber kits and get a decent wheel alignment.
Also on the lookout for some ae111 Corolla twin piston front brakes calipers and rotors to make it stop.
That is all.
Great idea mate, looks good. Perfect for motorkhanas, track days etc without spending a bomb... :yup:
Thanks Fattie, im quite looking forward to next year actually.
where abouts do you potsy ??
I'm looking to go racing next year to in the same sort of class.
in sydney probably going to join the HDCC - Hills District Car Club.
Im actually in the Picnic Point area, but have joined SSCC (Southern Sporting Car Club). Very keen to get something happening, just dont want to go overboard $$$$ wise.
4AGZE swap cant be too expensive, and will give you substantial power gains with a pulley kit.
Been done to death, so its not a complicated procedure.
Either way top work.

Potsy ive been helping a mate build up his AE92 sedan for track work , we have pretty much modded everything on the car as the sedan starts of with a 1.3 carby power house.
4agze fitted with recent sc12 upgrade , lsd gearbox , 2 spot front brakes and rear disc conversion , konis etc . Any help required just post away.

Thanks for the offers guys, i think at the moment i will be concentrating on braking and handling work. Handling will benefit from a set of new bushes all round and as soon as i get some 2 spot calipers up front i will have that bit sorted as well.
Engine will remain as is unless i stumble across something nice, really cheap.
I have had my fast cars, just never really had something that would handle and brake properly for a track, so thats where i want to learn more.
Again, cheers for the advice.
Whats happening with this project?
:D
Whats happening with this project?
:D
Well, today i ordered some super-duper brake pads from another forum member in QLD who seems like a top bloke....
Umm, last week i bought some AE111 Toyota Levin front 2 piston calipers and 275mm discs.
Turns out the discs will need a bit of engineering to fit.
I have already modified the calipers to suit (Easy Job).
This weekend i plan on fitting the front camber kits, and then getting another wheel alignment done for some extra toe out.
Happy now?:)
I think Secoh was better than Jim. He was less demanding.:yup:
hahah :D just keen to see it out there! Next event I'll be in is wakefield on the 20th next month. I got a TD04 off a WRX if you want to wake it up a bit! :D
Also on the lookout for some ae111 Corolla twin piston front brakes calipers and rotors to make it stop.
Can't speak for these things specifically, but if you're talking about a handling/track weapon then simply a good set of rotors/pads/lines would be heaps, especially when you've stripped a little weight out of it?
No point going to the extra expense/weight just for the sake of it - I assume the idea is a completely minimalist approach?
Dont tempt me on the turbo.....
hehe
looks like I can't use the R32 calipers I have. They might be useful too.

Brake department is being taken care of. I got the calipers and rotors after months of looking. Just ordered some QFM AR1M pads, 300 degree Fluid and now getting the rotors cut down to size.
Update:
Done 1 outing at Oran Park short circuit and was reasonably happy for what it is. I have decided that the brake department needs work and i need some camber both ends.
So far i have sourced some 2 piston calipers and 275mm rotors. These will be modified to fit. (see pics)
Bought some camber bolts and will do these after the front brakes.
Also looking for some AE101 rear discs and calipers as it seems these will compliment by big disc front end.
Not much more to mention as i have had little time and $$$ lately.
Plenty more to do, but at the moment it is progressing slowly.
Looking forward to my next Supersprint either Eastern Creek or Oran GP track.
Pics for Secoh, i mean Jim:O
looks great mate! Look forward to seeing it out there!
Righto, machined down the diameter to 262mm (from 275mm), bored out the centre hole and made a locating ring to make the load centre of the disc down from 55mm to 54mm (1 fucking mm)
Clearanced the Caliper casting to make room for the hub.
Just painting the discs and calipers.
Now waiting on my new pads....dammit.

Looks like the new brakes are heaps redder so they should work better.
Also, next time you are bored, remove the twin cam sticker and buff off whatever is left. Make it look cooler.
I miss my 82. Wish the engine never imploded... :'(
good stuff! when are you fitting it all up?
Looks like the new brakes are heaps redder so they should work better.(
"Brembo" red mate.....you gotta look the part to win:rotflol:
Anyway, still waiting on the pads.......
Spent this arvo fitting up the calipers and discs.
Fucking brake hoses are too short, so looks like i will have to get some custom ones made.:(
Had a few issues with the backing disc, so i just bent it in and cut it out. Hope this gets more air in anyway.
Still waiting on the fucking AR1M QFM pads....... Not happy, so i just used some cheapy "Protex" brand pads ,made in Malaysia shit ($35)
As you can see in the photos, i just made the brake hoses fit and cable tied them.
Last Pic is that of the original single piston caliper:gay:
Bled the brakes and took it for a spin.
So far so good, i can only imagine that with decent pads it will be excellent.
Front end feels much more robust under braking.
I am now more confident that sustained high speed braking will be less of a worry.
Anyway, next SS is the 17th August, provided i get new Brake hoses, the new Harness mounted up and a semi-decent drivers seat fitted, i am there!!
Can't wait;)
excellent!
which event is the 17th?

Looks good mate, the protex stuff isnt too bad for rotors not sure about pads, we have worked out spend more money on the pads, rotors dont make a huge difference as long as they dont warp, have had massive trouble with the RDA and DBA rotors. If you can get hold of some Hawk HT-10 or DTC 60, they are great, a little dusty, easy on rotors, good bite and no fade.
Nephews cheap protex at Mallala
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l269/toyocharged/01-15ClintSharp.jpg
Love that photo !!!
Red discs FTW.
Yeah i didnt know protex made pads.....they were the cheapest they had, the discs are the OEM Toyota to the best of my knowledge, just sandblasted machined and painted.
I will be trying differnt pads, i just wanted my brakes done this weekend before i go into hospital on thursday and cant do shit for 3 weeks:(
hospital?
Still going to make the 17th? Which club is it? I might run both days.
Yeah Hospital on the 31st, nothing too major, will be sore for a while though.
17th is still on the cards, just have to pay the $$$$
The club is either WRX, AROCA or HSV, havent actually looked yet
Yeah its the 17th (Sunday) for sure.
I will be off work for 2.5weeks as of tomorrow so ive got plenty of time to waste on the car:)
Did I miss your OP short times?
56.25 or was it 56.65 ?
Around that anyway.
I was happy at the time;)
Cheers mate.
I wont get a true comparison this time around as its the GP circuit, but with the subtle mods done i should be more competitive.
Shall see on the 17th i spose.
Hey at least you'll be able to compare your times to the superlap competitors!
You should be able to stop for a hell of a long time on those. I was only getting fade with my Superstrut setup during engineering, and that was 12 repeated 5-100-5km/h runs. Only got brake fade on number 10, and we did 12 as i miscounted :)
I was running EBC Greens, which are arse on slotted discs. Definately go Hawks or DS2500s.
I have already ordered (and paid for) the QFM pads so we shall see how these go.
STILL FUCKING WAITING though , not happy jan:rolleyes:
Anyway, even with these cheapo pads, it stops well

nooo don't tell me that! I just fitted all of the above :( lol!

tell them they have fucked around too long and you want your money back or some other more expensive pad for the same price.
Probably would but meh, Hospital 6am tomorrow morning it will be the last thing on my mind.
That is until i get home;)
I like it. I might do something similar as my next project. How much has it set you back in total?

Probably about 3~3.5k as it stands right now.
Cheap track days FTW.
I think a starlet with a 4age would be a good cheap track pig
How hard would it be to fit a 4AGE into a starlet?
dunno. Couldnt be too hard for you. 20 valve front cut for 1500 + about the same for a starlet = fun fun fun

I had a 20v in an Ae92 about 8 years ago. Best bank for buck change I did was swapping from the 100kw gear box to the 20v gear box ($300). Much better ratios.

This was an idea i have had for a while, however the Starlet has a rigid beam rear end...which is poo
However a G200 Charade is based on the same floorpan and has IRS, now a 20V G200 Charade would be something different:oh:

That and a lightened flywheel i am told work wonders.
Dont spose you remember the gearbox code by any chance?
Mine is apparently a C52.
On the hunt for a cheap flywheel and the above-mentioned gearbox now.
Thanks for reminding me.
C56 is the gearbox code you are after.
C60 is the 6spd, avoid.
charged: fwiw, my 4AGZE AE92 did a 1:18 around Mallala, so very cheap fun. Total cost on that one was $8k.

So how does one correctly identify a C56 gearbox?
Actually how can i tell if mine is infact a C52?
Not interested in C60, too many gears, probably too expensive as well.

2JZR31 should do this!
I could supply most of the G200 for scrap metal price and front cuts for 20v's start at about 1500. Can also use Applause rear discs. Would weigh a fair bit less than a rolla too.

Yep, a 2 door G100 or G200
Gutted, Applause rear discs, 4AGE 20V or GZE, LSD Close ratio box, race seat and harness, maybe a cage.
That would have to be lighter than my AE82 and go alot harder.
Lets do it!!
BTW i have scored another AE82 Twinky for parts (Std 86Kw 1600 though:( )
Could use this as the donor mock up engine wise?
I can contribute this
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/8802/charadefy8.jpg
I also have all the missing bits except maybe the bonnet
I'm just looking at ideas ATM but that sounds like the vest idea yet! How much does a G200/100 weigh? How much does a 20V have stock and how much will it have with cheapish mods? I'm not really in a position to start another project for a while though. :(
Not too sure on the weights of the G200, but Chuck has a reasonable starting point just there.
Best thing about the Charade is that they dont rust?? Never seen a G200 with any anywhere, unlike my poor Corolla:(
The Silver top 20 Valve has someting like 110~114kw standard, and revs like stink.
I really like the Quad throttle bodies myself, mmmmmm.
So yeah, if the AE82 was to die tomorrow, i would probably look at this option very seriously.
Best thing is all can be bought very cheaply and its all pretty much disposable when you are finished.
Plus the fact that i dont know of anyone who has done this to the best of my knowledge, so makes it kinda unique.;)
G200's are around 845kg. Ae82's are around 975kg.
Silver top's make 121kw and the black top's are 131kw. Front cuts start at 1500 bucks
The De Tomaso charade's only had 92kw and went really well. 20v conversion would hardly add any weight and, with stripping, the G200 would be under 800kg

mmmm sub 800kgs and 125ish killer wasps mmmmm, dont tempt me.
Yep better power to weight than an Ls1 Commodore or a type R. He has 5 white G200's and I got quoted 250 bucks to mix and match the best of the bits to make a whole car including applause rear discs. www.frontcuts has the 20v's on special at 1495
Are we OT yet :)
Dont spose your wrecker mate has any AE101 Corollas with a rear disc brake setup by any chance?
That is my next purchase.
What year model are they? Got a pic of one?
98~99, the fat bum shape Seca.
The top end model had discs, the poverty pack had drums.
Need, discs, calipers, stub axle, backing plate and possibly the handbrake cables
Might drop past on Saturday if he is open and has one.
Cheers for that.

Does he have a set of 14inch applause wheels for beer money that I can collect tomorrow?
Gotta work tomoro so wont be able to check til Friday.
That Charade seems like an awesome project! How much do blacktops usually go for and do all 20Vs come with an LSD gearbox?
Sorry for all the OT :p

I second that motion. Cheap low 14/high 13sec All Motor vehicle Chuck since AE82's with 20V's are in the mid 14's in mostly street trim (read, minimal weight reduction).
I also know someone with a set of 20V quads.
So does a 20V head bolt onto a GZE bottom end to give a boost friendly CR? I reckon that combo with a 1G blower would move pretty quick and have great throttle response for circuit racing.

Please tell me that wasn't for Applause wheels.
I saw a scrap metal truck with 2 complete Applause, one was the top model with alloys, today. Considering I got $100 for my G102 last year I reckon you could have grabbed both for $300.
Any guesses how light a G100 3 door can be made on the cheap?
Just found the paper work for my Charade, 13" rim with good tyre-$25
Got my AE101 rear discs and calipers today...yay.
Just gotta get em cleaned up, sandblasted and fitted.
Stay tuned for pics.....

Jesus!
Hi Potsy where did you buy the super strut brake's setup and how much do they go for. I have just brought one of these but in white, you have done a great job keep up the good work
Superstrut Calipers and discs came from JustJap at Kirrawee, these were $250
However i do believe that the SW20 MR2 turbo shares the same discs and calipers an so does the ST205 GT4 Celica, but the Celica is 5 stud pattern so you will need to re-drill the discs
The rear discs and calipers are from an AE101 seca and they were $120 for the set.
These will be installed over the coming weeks.
Car is progressing slowly but surely.
Just finished fabricating the Harness bar.
What does everyone think....strong enough?
Will it pass scruteneering??
Its made of 40x40 3mm box mainly, weighs a ton.
HoonBoy
14-08-08, 06:45 PM
I can't see the bottom section adding anything but weight. What have you got on the other side of the strut towers? I would be using some bigger plates there with more bolts to spread the load.
I just thought 4 points of attachment would be safer than 2.
Using all factory mounts, actually they are the factory seat mounts
It is as solid as. Not going anywhere in a hurry.
If i take out the passenger seat i will be weight neutral i think.
Gammaboy
14-08-08, 07:49 PM
I would have picked up off the rear strut tops - make it dual purpose...
Yeah thought about that, but was a bit to intricate for me and 40x40 section.
Plus the fact that i would have to butcher the plastics to put them back in around it.
At least this way its closer to the seat, is as rigid as fuck and all the plastic trim goes back in so it looks neater.
PS trim has to go back in to hide the rusted guard bottoms....:yup:
yeah bottom section is redundant, it neither adds strength nor rigidity considering the pulling load. And it's extra weight. I'd weld a flat plate to the back of the strut tower with captive threads and make a C section to extend from the top bar around the back of the strut tower.
All bolts need to be high tensile, which strut tops are not, so don't bolt to the strut top studs.
welding looks tops tho!
HoonBoy
14-08-08, 09:51 PM
I'm not sure if the seat nuts would be strong enough in an accident, after all the seats themself don't weigh anywhere what a person does and the seatbelt would keep them in place if a person was in there.
Could you brace the main bar forwards or backwards to the floor?
Yeah, you are right, i will brace the main bar with some diagonals going through the floor towards the spare wheel well.
That will be heaps better and scruteneer friendly i think.
Thanks Jim and Hoonboy for the input.
Stay tuned for further updates.
the other option is to move the bar behind the strut towers and through-bolt it into the towers. The direction of load means the towers will take all of the strain in an accident.
HoonBoy
15-08-08, 10:48 AM
I was going to suggest that, but he wants to keep the trim which would make it hard.
For those of you who are considering something similar:
http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=37095
Thats one with a haltech and 20v already. $3k
Race seat is in, harness bar has been remounted with a plate from the inside of the shock tower.
It aint going anywhere:)
Just want to get the rear brakes sorted before the 19th and its apples!
Well, all the brakes went together without too many dramas and i held high hopes for a brilliant track time, but it was not to be......:(
http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?19/10/2008.ORAN.S1
Nearly 1 second more than before!
I blame the temperature today....fark it was hot out there.
Was reading a road temp of 62C in the pits. (Go the Infra-red Thermo)
Anyway, my rear suspension settings now need sorting out ( ala Hoonboy?)
Damn thing goes understeery and then snaps oversteer. Very unsettling.
That and i need to get more camber happening both front and rear, and get some toe-out up the front i think.
Oh well, always next time:sad:

It was damn hot yesterday as well, I've got some major sunburn!
Lap times look good for the dollars spent. Handling seems to be typical stiff front wheel drive, might need to soften something up or get quicker reflexes :)
you bastard you did a 56 I've never done a 56 in my own car :(
Yeah yeah, but a 53.xx would have been better.
Funny really, cause it felt quicker than last time.
Dunnydore will do alot quicker after you piss that Buick lump of shit off.
Its far better engineered than team Corolla, just needs re-powering.
yeah, though Team Pov Bogan is low on funds again.
Likewise, Team Pov Corolla is going on holidays for a little while.
Just today i cleaned up the carport and made its bed.
Next outing will probably be March-ish next year i think.
Well time for an update.
Took the Corolla out again , this time to Eastern Creek.
Made its debut with a 2:04 ish best time.
I am happy with that and i think it hit its terminal velocity down the main straight too.
So nothing further to report as no changes or improvements have been made since this time last year.
Oh and the Bigport 4AGE loves the rev limiter, and diesel engine oil.
No its not a diesel:)
