View Full Version : The now soon to be rwd EVO dragger
After a few beers on a Friday night we came up with the idea of turning the engine to North/South and running the evo in rwd and do some skids in the process.
We removed the engine, gearbox and front cross member and suspension.
I am looking to run a s13 (with a lot of modifications)front crossmember, coilovers, lower controll arms, steering rack ect.
Im not going to cut up the front end, so im going to leave it as factory looking as I can.The firewall and tunnell might have to be cut up a little bit.
The transmission will be a built C4 auto with trans brake.
Im hoping to have it done by the Winternationals in early June.
The turbo and inlet manifolds will have to be made again and im thinking of mounting the turbo behind the headlight.
All up I should take out another 80-100kgs out of it from all of the awd driveline.

Why would you do that to an Evo =(
This is quite possibly the best idea I have ever heard.

touche!
I dunno, i always thought that getting your evo to run a 9 sec with 4wd is one challenge.
Why not buy something thats specifically RWD for the next challenge. To me it just seems your undoing all the good work with your 4wd setup and selling it off to make a new RWD setup, something the car didnt come with.
Its just preference to me, seeing as how i love Evos. Ive seen heaps of vids of Evo 9s drifting around after being setup as RWD, and while it pulls a mean slide, i died a little inside.

yep im with you, best idea ever
if its a genuine evo I wouldn't, if its a fakie then go ahead
LOGIC - would it be better to buy something lightweight as a roller with a cage already and put the engine in? surely keeping the evo as an evo will be better in the long run...
OPINION - FUCKING COOL!
are you using a hilux diff ? or are you going in for 9 inches of pure pleasure ? there's an old lady that drives a gd galant around here. it really needs something like this.
im running a MA70 supra rear end for the time being.I have been running the rear end for a few meets already(when it was still awd)so I will see how it holds up.

Im thinking along those lines eventualy, that talon is a tuff car:yup:

i was there one day when you smashed a driveshaft into three pieces... good way to solve it
ma70 rear is good, but you shoudl really go for a jza80 as they're stronger again.. do it right, once....
Quit talking and just do it already!
Oh wait, you just about have...
Seems like a bit of a shame, I really liked watching this car over the years as a pro-street style 4WD monster. Surely you could just get another shell and chop it up instead?

You're right Rob, all is not lost. I guess it's kind of like the evolution of the Rigoli WRX 2-door... so as long as you're chasing 8-sec ET's I'll be happy :)

Yeah i head that u were running a supra diff at the rear. someone told me lol
hard to adapt?
but u just bolted on the slicks not long ago, why the change? sick of driveline breakages?

I have already spent a lot on the evo with cage, rear end ect, so it wasnt cost effective to go the other shell route.
The supra rear end wasnt too bad to adapt, I bought the whole rear end for $200 and a chassis shop charged me bugger all to put it in, this is a budget build at its best:).The diff ratio was sourced and then changed, and the tailshaft was shortend to suit.
I bolted on slicks as the radials were due for a replacement and I thought what the hell lets run it on slicks.

Awesome. In stock form, they're pretty abysmal as a RWD only (few guys have locked the centre diff and removed the front driveshafts before), but with a well set up rear end like that, I reckon it will rock.

Hell yeah, leave the inlet mani that way around, dry ice cooler passenger floor (obviously vented externally) will get some more weight to the rear, would be cool to see bigs and smalls on a lancer too :) gearbox change will probably net you 1 sec off your et just there, good luck with it all very cool.

Why don't you just put a big block and a powerglide and go faster?
because he doesn't want to cut up the car.. and to fit a big block in that body shape you have to trim the rad support.
Why don't you just put a big block and a powerglide and go faster?
He doesnt have an 800+hp big block.
Just stirring. Will be interesting to see how it goes witha proper setup.

just as a brief aside rob, how much power did the original engine make ? did it give any real trouble ?

Settle down guys, it's all reversable he said.
Awesome Roberto
just as a brief aside rob, how much power did the original engine make ? did it give any real trouble ?
It made 705 hp at 4 wheels on 28psi and c16 fuel.
It has also made 570 at the wheels on 98 PULP:D
No trouble engine wise only the driveline breakages ect.
These engines when set up properly can make 900 hp very reliably and run all day as a circut set up with 600 hp.
Still nothing doing atm as work is crzy ect.
Turn it into a 3 wheeler with a Kenworth engine, that'd be different. And why not?

While I see your point, Evos were built as rally cars. Most of them have ended up beaten to death on gravel roads around the world. Alot of them have been reshelled a few times. At least this one can still be called an original EVO shell.

Well its been a while since my last post, but finally I am going to pull my
finger out this week and start getting the shitta happening.
Im excited woohoo :)
1st stage is some minor tube work to mount the engine, pics up soon
update time, after another session on the beer(last night), its been stripped down(today)and is off to the chassis shop and the front is being tubed from the main hoop. The reason for this is when I started removing the cross member I found a few scary cracks in the chassis(wonder why??) so it needed to be strengthend, and im looking at some how grafting a gtr driveline to the 4g and still keeping it awd and running a c4 auto behind it.Confusing??
Any thoughts?
HoonBoy
06-09-08, 03:01 PM
That sounds weird but cool! How the hell would you get the C4 to work with the GTR centre diff?
the gtr font diff is part of the sump, so im thinking of modifying the sump to fit the evo block. The transfer case from a gtr is at the rear of the box and with a little bit of stuffing around it should be able to be adapted to the auto.I know MV automatics do a adaptor kit for a powerglide but im not too sure if I want to run a powerglide on my engine.
So not so much RWD as AWD then. Why the GTR driveline though? Is it that much stronger than what's available for a Lancer?
PS. If you end up quicker than the black one, will you still be allowed in the workshop?

How strong are the GTR transfer cases compared to the normal 4x4 ones?
im not too sure,I was also thinking of going a hilux transfer incase the gtr sump is too hard to mod.

If you want an AWD transfer case, Mercedes Sprinters run divorced, seperate, singe range transfer case. Iirc they are made by Borg Warner, I've replaced one and they aren't actually that heavy. Best bit is they are part time so RWD skids are doable.

What size rubber are you planning on using? Although if you're tubing the front end, I guess it doesn't matter what is done to the metal, but what about the rear end?
Im planning to run 26X8.5 on the front and 32X14 on the rear with the apprporiate diff ratio to compensate the larger tyre diameter. Its also getting tube frame all ovet and a 9 inch diff 4 link etc.

Not sure if it's the case in NSW, but in the ACT it's required that all new or redeveloped commercial properties have a disabled tiolet. And by redeveloped they include just moving some walls around! My station has a disabled toilet ,even though it's staff only, but a wheelchair can't fit through the doors into the admin area where it is.

I think in zoom or something a few years back there was a white R32 GTR running a powerglide mated the stock 4WD drive system. it seemed to work alright considering that it ran easy 10s on street tyres :)
If you're tube framing the car, why not run the same size tyres all round? something more like 28x11.5? It seems to make a lot more sense than trying to compensate for things in the diff. ratios. surely that wouldn't be a lack of rubber either, the ST/289 cars are in the 7s and in the US they have 1500kg yank tanks running low 7s on 325 radials?
things certainly have become a little wilder since the start of this thread haven't they

Im hearing ya:yup:I get a little excited very easily,Im thinking 28X9 on the front and 28X11.5 on the rear so the rolling diameter is the same.
Today was fun I spent 4 hrs lightening one of the rear doors :)
It went from 25kgs to 5.5 kgs and I only used an air hack saw :D
So out of the 4 doors I should save around 75kgs once the lexan goes in.

The old black doors are on the black car and are still all tin etc
The black car weighs in at 2400 with driver.
Im hoping to get the weight down to 2200 as the black car isnt tubed all around.
The 2 rear doors will be welded on and the 2 front doors will be operational.
My evo weighed in at 2950 with me in it.(1340 kgs) im 108kgs.
It was a full car all glass etc.

So why didn't you just buy another lancer ($500 POS) to cut up and keep the evo as an original evo??
Where is that at?
My guess is Thunder Road but I could be way off.
when going to these extremes why not make a full chassis out of tube and throw a fibreglass shell over it ala funny car or is it to do with a class thing?

piss funny, good looking car tho.
its at S L Race fabrications in Brisbane
The Shell was cracked all over the place and the front was cracked from the fire wall to the tunnel. So I didnt want to try and dodgy it up.the next best thing was to tube it.
I am going to keep the front end standard dimensions.I want it to look like an evo from the outside.
So the reason for cutting it up was the shell was in a bad way and it worked out cheaper if i used the shell. To run a composite body costs a shit load
and I can still call it an evo(kind of)but I know its not a complete car etc.

they are not a simple setup to get working well..
the manual shifter is much simpler and easier to work
The box came with the air shifter set up, but if its a pain I will change it to a manual shifter

it is a pain... filling the C02 bottle after every pass would shit me...
the normal shifters are bloody tops on the libertys..
Dale, may be a silly question... is an air shifted change quicker than manual?
They are the same but with an airshifter you can keep your hands on/near the wheel.

the way a liberty works it actually holds the previous gear until it picks up the next gear so air or manual shifting is suppose to be the same...
They are the same but with an airshifter you can keep your hands on/near the wheel.
Depends on the set up, some have the button on top of a shifter so your hand would be in the same place.
Some even operate by using the shifter, by moving the shifter back and forward to change gears it activates the air shifter instead of moving the linkages.

I thought all air shifted lencos normally used buttons ??
i know some used a shifter (lightening rods ??) but wasnt that just a cunt to use,From memory the Lenco we fitted to the Nasty bug had a shifter, but we fucked em off for buttons.

that ski boat motor dale is building is for the evo
lols.
I have been a busy boy at work, saving some monies to pay for the shitta.
Nothing much has been done but in a few weeks we will get back into it
Engine specs are
4G63 4 banger, dry sump on methanol and a GT47 turbo etc
should make around 1200 hp and with my current driving skills im guessing a 12.9 @ 200mph
Will it still be 2 litre or bigger?
The 1200hp bit sounds interesting, how reliable? Once a year refresh reliable or one meeting reliable? :D

Rob... quote of the day!!!! PML!!!!:rotflol:

It should be reliable for a season (4-5 meets) as the black apc evo is making around that hp and has lasted 6 meets so far (25 passes):)
We are looking at a 2.2 litre
Ben gonna set up the chassis?
doesnt nick only run a baby gt42r rob?

Hey Rob,
Just met Nick a few days back. Was told you had to redo your chassis? Saw your street evo too.
Yeah, they've swapped the GT42R for a GT47R on the black evo. Massive stuff.

yup, I had a few dramas with the chassis as it wasnt what i had in mind:knock:
Then I was going to buy a pro stock cobalt from the states and put the 4 g in that, but my wife talked me out of is as she wanted me to continue with the evo 3 platform.
So a decision was made and I have started a new chassis
with a new chassis builder and this time its being done the way I wanted.
So now I have a chassis for sale:)

whats the plan now Rob??
i know what it is like having problems during a build...
its still the same plan but with a much better chassis design to accomodate my liberty box and clutch can.
The body is still evo 3 etc.
Hoping to have it on display at jambo fingers crossed.

Well to keep it short, when I had decided to go all out rwd tube chassis etc, I asked Scott(chassis builder) if he needed the engine/ box and clutch can etc.
He said he did not need them, after the chassis was built I took it to a mate of mine to start fitting the engine and gearbox.
After a lot of head scratching we came to the conclusion it wasnt going to work using the clutch can (height issues among other things)and it wasnt set up right.NOT HAPPY!!!!
It would work with an auto but that wasnt the plan.

update time on the shitta.
Its at the chassis guy and hes finishing all of the small fiddly stuff(brackets, mounts windows, rear wing etc)then in 2 weeks its off to ARE cooling to get the water/air intercooler radiator, piping etc done.So in 5 weeks I will have it back to finish wiring etc.Im wanting it to be running in early june so I can test/ shit my pants ready for jambo.
Thinking of leaving it in ghetto black and after jambo painting it yellow.
Im going for a dry sump set up aswell and am in the process of getting the front engine cover cnc'd aswell as the sump.
Maybe paint it dodgy brown in case it gets real scary?
(good to hear its coming together though)
haaaaa, im getting a brown race suit

you should have called haltech first.. there new add on boxes add about 15 extra inputs and outputs as well as more thermocouple inputs that you can poke a stick at..
and the haltech 2 step is better than the motec one...
oh well, its done now and im stuck with a motec:)

Hey Dale, forgive me but Im a noob to this thing and was wondering if you could you school me on two steps?
I read a comparison between the AEM series 1 vs Haltech's PS1000 on the two step launch control at highboost forums and for the same RPM both the ECU's two step are set at, the haltech produces more boost..
Why is that and also why is the haltech better than the motec?
Thanks !
