View Full Version : rb26 oil cooler
I've got an external oil cooler in the gtr as well as the factory water/oil heat exchanger unit that the oil filter used to screw into (its now remote mount).
Since the car is pretty much 100% road use, i'm concerned it'll drop temperatures too far. Should remote oil coolers have a thermostat bypass valve or something if the oil isn't up to temp?
yes, should use thermostat, i myself have a earls oil cooler sandwich plate with thermostat built into it, then i screw on my remove filter mount. this way i reduce lines then if i was using a separate thermostat.
do u race your gtr, reason i ask is on the street my oil temps seem pretty stable.
No immediate plans to race it but I might do a few track days so I'd like to keep it on.
Where do you buy these thermostats?
Mocal Think Auto sell them, Speco make one as well I think also try Summit Racing.
i buy mine from speed shops, b and m is cast and is ok, earls are all billet.
To tell the truth, I dont know if the oil cooler relocation kit has a thermostat in it. I dont think it has since it just seemed to be a small adapter from the oil filter mount on the engine... I'll check tomorrow and get pictures if i'm unsure

This is what I;m running on the GTiR: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/images/large/MOC-SP1GT.jpg
You can see that black thing, I believe this is the thermostat. I've noticed however, that even with the thermostat, oil temps are roughly 5-8deg lower when the oil is below 80deg (i.e. before the thermostat full opens) and on truely cold weather, it only ever hovers just above 70deg.
Does anyone know if the thermostat opening point is adjustable?
I think I left the oil cooler adapter on the bloody engine when I sent it away to be rebuilt so I can't get a model or picture of it :(
Attached are a couple of pix of the relocator kit that bolts to the bottom of the sump - Is this a generic item or from a specific kit that someone could identify with/without a thermostat?
looks to be generic, if it was trust/greddy i could say 100% would have one built in.
99% sure it doesn't have one there's no room for it in that adaptor.
