View Full Version : Barina vibrating like a motherfucker
Barina vibrates above 80km/h.
Just had a wheel balance done and the front was out by 55 grams on one side and 10 grams on the other..... but that didn't fix the vibration.
It feels just like a wheel balance issue, or like a tailshaft in a RWD car.
Help me fix this cheaply as the car is getting traded in a few months time.
they fucked up the balance or a tyre is out of round.
The tyres seem fine, there aren't any eggs or anything I can feel or see on them.
I suppose I can take it somewhere else for another wheel balance... but I'll be pissed if I spend another $25 on that and it was already right

So go back to the same place you had the balance done and ask them to check it again as the vibration is still there.
swap them front to back and see if it makes any difference as suggested.
also make sure you check wheel bearings.
im with jim though I reckon, probably noticing the very first signs of tread seperation.
It's been doing it for 18 months+ and doesn't seem to be getting worse or better, we just keep forgetting about it as we don't ever drive it on the HWY so it's not something we ever think about. Finally got the WB done and as mentioned was surprised it didn't do anything. I took it for a bit of a drive and it maybe seems a little smoother around 80ish - but that's probably mental more than anything - but as soon as you get above 80 it still vibrates.
I'll drive in to work one day later this week and take it in.

Could be any shaft in the engine / drivetrain if it isn't the wheels - all it takes is one flogged out bearing. I suggest starting at the wheels and working your way back to the engine - test every bearing possible and then engine mounts - after that it's into the mechanics / replace engine / gb etc.

Does it have stock wheels? If not the wheels might not have the right sized centre bore and will need a centric ring to sort it.

if its getting traded i wouldnt even fucking bother fixing it. i dont know any dealers that will drive your car on a highway before trading the car. most wont even drive the car at all

I am too nice to do that, even to a dealer (yes, I know, natural selection).
The other reason is that I'm about to drive it interstate, it's never really bothered me as we don't drive on the HWY but we're about to do an 18,000km round trip and the thought of that vibration pains me.. and surely after that amount of time
It is not an engine part or gearbox, as it is road speed dependant & not engine speed dependant. Has to be a tyre, wheel, hub, brake disc, CV, or output shaft/diff assembly (fucks me what a FWD has, it's like a fucking steering box... power goes in, power comes out.. I don't want to know what happens in there).
Spoke to the guy and he's happy for me to bring it back, I'll probabl ybe able to drive it on Wednesday.
Did the wheel balance again. It was fine.
Front wheel bearings are fucked, costing a fucking fortune to pay a mechanic to fix them but I can't be fucked...... I must be getting old.
Bit scary actually that it has a vibration this bad from wheel bearings, I'm surprised the wheel hasn't come off (!!!!).

So it was the wheel bearings?
I had a similar problem that was doing my head in for over 2 years, dragway mags with the 'shanked' type nuts. Get up to over 70km/h and it would shake the shit out of you, really frustrating trying to drive like that. Wheel balancing, alignments did nothing. I had about 5mm shaved off the hub of the wheel a while ago to stop them rubbing on the guards, checked all that and it was all plumb. Had read on line that the washers in the steering rack can get fucked and thought between that and some play in the steering linkage, it must be the cause. Never bothered to fix any further out of anger.
I was polishing the wheels one day on the car as I couldn't be bothered taking them off like I always do and noticed the washers were a bit loose. On further inspection found out that the nuts were bottoming out on the hub before they were clamping tight on the wheel. After the hub shave, they must have only just touched, and being a soft mag, a few times off and on was enough to leave the washer a bit loose.
So, I had been driving around with only the two lock nuts (slighter shorter nut) holding the wheels on for over 2 years.
Fucking Hellajuah!!!! And it drives really well now, a very small poof-teenth of vibration left at highway speed which I think is more than reasonable after the period of time it was shaking itself apart.
Well that's what they reckoned at the tyre shop.
I took it to the mechanic with very specific instructions to check it out before doing any work as I'm still not convinced it's wheel bearings... there's no whirring at all and there doesn't seem to be any notable play in the wheel when you pull it towards you or to either side...

What year model Barina is it? Is it the same model my sister had all those years ago? If so, when half of that plastic front spoiler came off it felt fucked at above about 90. There were vibrations but not through the steering. The whole shooting match just shuddered. Mach wave and compressibility effects of the barina.
Otherwise, try the front to back swap and see if it makes a difference.
Spoke to mechanic again, reckons the tyres are delaminating. Can do me some cheapies for $77 each..... fingers crossed.
Interesting the tyre shop didn't pick that up.
Cheapies for $77ea fixing the problem FTW
Tyre shop not finding problem & mechanic charging me 1.5 hours labour on top of the cost of the tyres FTL
