bought the car about 18 months ago for $1000, then ruptured my achillies the same weekend... pushing the car through some traffic lights when it mysteriously cut out, got my achillies repaired, then 2 weeks later, while a still in a brace, I had a phone call, the Hq's had pulled out of a meeting at calder, and they were trying to get enough cars to run a BMWCCV regularity event, so I entered, it was only my clutch foot that was stuffed
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y171/morerevsm3/E30%20stuff/e30atCalder.jpg
I even jagged winning the event, I did a couple of clubsprints at Winton and Mallala, next I purchesed some H&R springs and camber plates that are control items for US spec E30, as theses are proven to be a good, well balanced setup

after

this resulted in a 4.5 second/lap improvement at winton, down to 1:46...not to bad for a car with only ~70RWKW

Nice work there mate. Will the rules allow a 323 or 325 head to be stuck on for stroker awesomeness?
morerevsm3
02-08-09, 06:47 PM
next on the list was a 327i conversion, 323i head, 325i manifold, throttlebody, loom and ecu, 19lb injectors and 535 AFM
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y171/morerevsm3/E30%20stuff/IMG_0122.jpg
it now actually revs and makes ~ the same power as stock 325i approximately 105rwkw, so they will let me run with production class in E30 racing
now the real fun has started
IE sway bars, 25mm hollow front, 22mm hollow rear

Looks good Alan, I should be down at a vic circuit next year for some fun with the e30s. Those e30 boys race pretty hard and seem to love slamming into each other and if you fall off track make sure you come back on without looking for other cars thats seems to be the norm:rotflol:

hahahaha you saw them play bumper-cars at Sandown, that collision coming onto the main straight was laughable.

last year at PI I saw some deplorable driving, coming off the track, then coming back on full tilt without looking. In race 1 a BMW was getting lapped by myself and another guy and he let the other guy through, I was following and he closed the door at turn 1 on me. Why the guy needed to take the race line when he was fucking coasting around I have no idea. The faster BM guys seemed okay and seemed to have a clue at what was happening around them but the mid to rear guys had NFI:knock:

Its quite wierd the cars are meant to be heavily controlled engine wise but at PI some were a lot quicker in a straightline than others:eek:. I think the last time they ran at Lala in 2007 the quick ones ran high 23s and the slow ones 27-28s http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?20/05/2007.MALL.R3
Alan you will lift the driving standards by a mile mate, most of the guys are good its only a few that need a axe to the head :)
How long before you hit the track with the car mate ?

03-08-09, 09:47 PM
there are 2 classes within the class, E30 race cars and E30 production cars (supposed to be stock), mine will be in between and not eligible for series points, I probably won't be ready until first round next year, still don't have harness, window net, C3 license, fia tagged underwear etc yet, also some tyres with grip would help, but I need some tyres for the M3 for aust hillclimb championships, the ones I used for state round other weekend were SR2 compound bridgstones that someone used in 2005 targa tasmania, so I need something better I think (even though I won IP at state round and set track record)

that makes sense with the race/production classes.
What do these things handle like? is the suspension a horror (as a road car) also whats the stud pattern?

morerevsm3
15-02-10, 09:33 PM
yes, M3 is the registered one.
taking the 2.7 engine with 2.3 head and 2.5 intake and electronics out and fitting the stock 2.5 engine to suit production class rules this weekend before doing it's first official race meeting the weekend after (got a complete E34 525i for the motor) was racing speedway go karts last weekend, so only thing I got done sunday evening was trimming and fitting crank scraper, definately a must if you are going to track an E30, they suffer severe oil starvation on left hand corners otherwise
morerevsm3
09-03-10, 11:11 AM
got through OLT at Mallala, after Dave75 didn't like my worn tyres, had a radiator hose leak in qualifying, smooth sailing after that, except for balance problem with setup.
this weekend was Winton, round 1 of E30 racing series, first 2 races, had engine cutting out just over 5000 rpm, ended up being water in TPS from hose leak at Mallala, car balance was much better, still on very worn tyres (except wet races, competitors loaned me some better tyres for both of them, got down to low 1:45 in race 3, fastest race spec car in that race was low 1:42 (mine is production class, not race spec) we had 2 wet races, finished 5th in first one with engine not running right, but couldn't see a thing in last race (not even the tail lights of the car in front of me), so cruised around and stayed on the track for 7th, so really happy so far, had some really good race long tussles, no paint exchanged. now to remove 50kg, and get some better tyres before Phillip Island

put the old banger on the dyno thursday, the stock 2.5l engine that I took out of a $400 ebay purchased wrecked E34 525i seems to be pretty good, it has some shitty extractors, and I fitted a crank scraper before putting it in, made 110.8 RWKW
Not bad at all.
I am still stuffing around with my bent rear suspension.
The 2.7 is an absolute dog with its rev cap of 4500rpm.

Grab a $20.00 ebay chip and chuck it in. They make quite a big difference to overall power and response and bump the limiter up to 5300.

Is that a 731 head or 885 ?
Matching 325i manifold ?
morerevsm3
21-08-10, 09:08 PM
885, and matching 325i manifold, it was terrible where it meets the head, hard to see in photos, but floor has ~8mm lump right accross it, takes a long time to clean out with a slow arse compressor, 4 minutes waiting for compressor for every 30 seconds of grinding
morerevsm3
29-08-10, 11:38 PM
head is on.
had a good weekend at Winton, still had miss in practice and qualifying, the a flat left front on 2nd flying lap in qualifying, so only did !:46 or something, loosened and retightened every earth I could find, changed MAF and TPS, cleaned crap out of plug under manifold properly, and hoped for the best, started race 1 from P10, miss was gone, passed a few cars and finished 6th, ended up 5th outright for the weekend, after finishing in 6th every race, and got down to 1:42.2, on very worn tyres, was involved in close tussles throughout every race, and no scratches, so very happy

went well at PI, was 3rd fastest car in E30 class (1:57.3), overtaking through turn 12 and running side by side sliding through lukey heights is awesome fun, got taken out in race 3, 2 dented guards, 2 dented bumpers and bent tie rod end being the result, but thats racing

rain is wonderful stuff, qualified 2nd in IP at Winton on the weekend in the wet, but all the races were dry, finished 5th in race 1, 5th in race 2, then halfway through race 3, was in a fight for 3rd, 4th,5th,5th,7th and 8th and engine wiring harness got a short in it and melted wire from ecu to fuel pump and ignition relay, so ended my weekend, but the results of race 1 and 2 give me a big enough points lead in late model B catergory in IP to win the championship with 1 round to go
How'd you go with the brakes yesterday? I saw you were running around midfield but then it looked like you came in last at the turn 4 exit?

got the brake issue sorted with 3rd set of calipers for the weekend, got from 19th on the grid up to 12th, then throttle jammed almost wide open coming into lukey heights... was going to come back to pits, but safety car came out, so stayed out to record finish by riding brakes in 5th, and using ignition on and off, finally had a trouble free race for the last event, but I wasn't having the best drive of my career, only got from 20th to ~ 15th

the Ground control suspension is very good, and they are very helpful, I went lower spring rates than they recommended, and are happy I did, I still run higher rates than all the other E30 racers though, except the Canberra guys that have had Greg Nolan playing with their cars, he has gone stupid high rates on front, and soft on rear, + cut metal spring stubs off (illegal for class). I did consider BCs, but I don't think they have seperate bump and rebound, and are much heavier, weight is critical to me being in a heavier 4 door car, and a fat cunt.
Hardly call you a fat cunt. Well not to your face anyways. ;)

won the round at Winton on the weekend, lowered the official E30 lap record to 1:38.6 round win also gives me this years championship with 2 rounds out of 8 left to run :) 4 X 1st places, 1 second and 1 3rd (after DNF in 1 race due to broken gear linkage), so TK's head work is certainly doing the job for me, along with Braune supa tunes tuning getting the most out of it. the guy that should have been second also has a TK built engine, but due to other circumstances, he missed 3 rounds.

Yes, well done.

I have video from previous round, just scraped into 1:38's then, but vids a bit boring, started front row, and led all the way, so not much action to see, so haven't uploaded to youtube
How did you go on the weekend? I was at the Hayshed all weekend, looked for you in the pits very late yesterday but couldn't find you.

I have a slight problem, large bottem end rattle, only did half a lap at full noise with it rattling it's head off , first I was thinking tyre delaminating, then gearbox shitting itself, then, at the end of the main straight, worked out it was engine rev related, so went in at Honda and packed up, will post video when I get time

Good time for winton. Obviously you are going quick as you are winning. But I still wonder how my stock motor mx5 with 89.3rwkw has done a 1:38.0. When compared to your car that has had some development and a lot more power. Hope you don't have too much dramas with your engine.

I must giving racing a go soon. Looks like a lot of fun. What is with all the smoke from the laser?
it was a 323 GTR or similar I think. He lunched his gearbox later in the day too. Wasn't happy at being flat towed either...
That video was saturday's race yeah? They look like good fun to drive and (relatively) cheap to race. Seems to be a reasonable number of them now too. Did you guys all get 4 races a day (ie with saloon cars and IPRA)? I was there on sunday on the outside of honda and only saw you do about one lap before pulling off. Hope damage is not as bad as it sounds.

was sunday morning IP race, I didn't cross enter into saloon cars, the rest did, qualifying and race 1 for each class saturday, and 2 races for each class on sunday, winton we get practice, qualifying and 4 races per event, generally the cars are very reliable and cheap to run, I have spare crank and rods laying around, so won't cost much in $$ to fix, just some time

Nice build! What combination of parts made 145kw?

to be fair, car is not strapped down, and runs up on front roller only, which gives consistent readings, but ~ 5-8 rwkw higher than if strapped into both rollers.
specs are
TK ported head, JE 9.7:1 pistons, 64mm throttle body, flywheel lightened to dangerous level, raceland headers, adjustable cam gear, and some really good cold air ducting, all else stock, including ecu and chip, injectors, fpr etc as per class rules, I think around 7 E30 race cars have been on the same dyno, and have varied from 106rwkw, up to mine having most power...by 2kw over another one TK did...

is there a compression limit in class rules?
morerevsm3
07-11-12, 03:57 PM
factory pistons or the JE equivalant pistons only, 10.0:1 maximum compression (which you can't get with 9.7:1 pistons anyway, my pistons were just touching the head...now have spun bearing)

rebuilt engine today ready for round 1 in 2 weeks time

slightly reshaped chambers where pistons were just touching the head and caused the problem
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y171/morerevsm3/E30%20stuff/Picture015_zpsd6a0691c.jpg
slightly lightened flywheel (class rules say original flywheel must be used, but can be lightened)

I sold that motor, have another 2.7 for my sons 13's for 1300 turbo E30, will get forged pistons and 2.5 head, megasquirt etc, should be good for a reliable 400hp
camber/toe kit details here, much better than any pics I could take-

Awesome thankyou! Started reading your turbo thread but all the pic links are broken, I'm turboing my 2.7, was going to run the chip for more revs but since I'm trying to keep the engine reliable I think I'll keep the low rev limiter
Plus I'm doing it just for fun, not power so doesn't make a big difference to me
