View Full Version : Panelcorp Racing - NEW Rx3 Project

As a few of you know,
I have recently joined a group of panelshops / smash repairers here in Sydney
I have always been a Mazda fan and a keen follower / supporter / racer of the 1/4 mile of black stuff
I had already started a project prior to this change, which I was trying to run a 10 for $10k and was making pretty good progress
Here was the car
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7233/bp6b1fbwkkgrhgookjcejll.jpg[/url
And I thought I was doing pretty well until I had a chassis bloke look at her - who showed me all of this
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6098/workshop1109078.jpg (http://img31.imageshack.us/i/workshop1109078.jpg/)
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/5065/workshop1109079.jpg (http://img130.imageshack.us/i/workshop1109079.jpg/)
So after a bit of thought - we decided to throw the budget out the window and do this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/7447/getattachment3o.jpg (http://img705.imageshack.us/i/getattachment3o.jpg/)
Will post updates of the nice new parts coming from the states and progress as we go
If the Mighty ALCHO12A can run a 8.1
Hopefully the PANELCORP RX3 can go quicker (with Steve, Dale, Dave, Chris, Rob and a heap of other guys support)
STAY TUNED

Nah,
I am not a panelbeater myself
I have about 10 of them that work for us in 3 shops in NSW (if that helps)
Will put up some more pics of the bits that have arrived tonight
Cheers
Chris
Why not buy ALCHO12A chassis and fix that?
Would save you a heap of $$

I know Steve and ALCHO12A very well
It's not that I don't have the balls for a small tyre car - I just have the brains to build a big tyre one !!!
Steve will be heavily involved in this project, as will the boys at Castle Hill Exhaust / Performance and all those who helped Steve too
Yes it's an 808 - I am not going to cut up a GEN RX3 for a drag car - may build a tasty street one later !!!
OK,
Here are the start of the nice new expensive bits to get this revised project underway
I won't be cutting any corners on this build - given the time cards we are chasing
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/7169/getattachment4lt.jpg (http://img682.imageshack.us/i/getattachment4lt.jpg/)
Will post some other pics as the parts arrive
Was this car in Tasmania?
What engine and drive line are you thinking of putting in it?

Not going to be much room for anything behind the Driver's seat
Wheel tubs will be above parcel shelf height
Motor wise - we will not be running a 12A - Steve and ALCHO will be back and I will just be embarassed
Got pics of the diff and shocks coming this weekend (I hope)

That jig is awesome!
wotmazda
16-12-09, 06:27 PM
Yeah Bigmuz - it looks pretty funny sitting on those tyres
Car has actually been on a jig since and was found to be twisted following the hack job done by the last Guy
Been pulled straight and now the rails and bits are starting to go in
Pretty easy to twist a Mazda when only the roof is hodling it together:knock:

Are they Rod Andrews rails?
Why so high? 100mm is high for a purpose built drag car.
Lookin sweet there Chris. I might have to hurry up with the engine at this rate.

When did 100mm to the sills become "high" for a purpose built drag car ??

Last time I looked most were about 40mm off the ground.

100mm or 4 inches is about the average for a purpose built car
You still need clearance for a sump and bounce from wheels up on a launch
I havn't seen a single 1/2 or 3/4 chassis car with much less ground clearance that what we are aiming for
Its less than a can of coke off the ground !!!!
Am bloody impressed with the bends they put into those chassis rails with fairly minimal deformation.
Looking good.

I slightly remember reading something about a andra rule that 100mm is the lowest you could go, but that may have been for the front nose/wing.

Yeah I was thinking full chassis, not 1/2 3/4 cars.

+1, hence wanting to know who made them!

Maybe super street or one of the lower classes, but the quick end has bugger all clearance. Try to drive over a coke can with a pro stocker.

The rails came from the States
Well check with the Anthony (chassis guy) if he is happy for me to let you know from where
They are a higher strength steel than the normal blue boxed tube used for chassis, and as there are no welds the structural integrity is much higher
They are also bent up prior to being shipped and arrive as you see them !!!

Weekly Update Time
Most of the clip has been welded in this week and is starting to take shape

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/9937/image007ci.jpg (http://img36.imageshack.us/i/image007ci.jpg/)
The cage has started to be bent up (I am still deciding on how far to go with the cage)
Cage is bent up out of Racetech tube and will be certainly strong enough to keep me out of trouble
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2933/mazda005.jpg (http://img85.imageshack.us/i/mazda005.jpg/)
Biggest update for the week is that the Diff Housing is almost ready to install with the 4 link brackets and support braces all welded on It sure looks the business !!
Heres a pic of it after it had come back from being welded sitting waiting to go to its HOME!!
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9153/image011ch.jpg (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/image011ch.jpg/)
I am still deciding on whether to run a set of Gun Drilled 40 spline axles or to use the Strange Two-Piece axles that are rated to sub 7.50s
Any advice or experience with either the Strange 40s or the Strange two-piece would be great !!!

Start of the welding of the cage and the mainhoop
Chassis guy left his camera at home and I am too far away to go take pics!!!!
The start of the cage
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/8753/workshopjan10017.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/workshopjan10017.jpg/)
The view from outside
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1958/workshopjan10016.jpg (http://img638.imageshack.us/i/workshopjan10016.jpg/)
Its amazing to realize just how much steel goes in to making a proper cage another 3 lengths of tube arrived this week to go in to her (3 x 7.2m = 21.6M of rollcage) - this is on top of what has already been installed or purchased !!
You cant see it in these pics, but the rear clip has been braced through square tube in the sills all the way past the B pillar and also has a series of brace plates and anchors in the rear
Hopefully get a bigger update next week

What is the reasoning behind making a "roof hoop" instead of 2 a pillar bars and a window bar joining them...

I have never heard of anyone not building a chassis car on a jig.
Car was on a jig for the rear rails install - to be measured, pulled and welded
The rest of it is based off Mazda and what went in to the rear end
It is not a "Chassis Car" but a back halfed 808
Will build a true chassis car once $$ allow
Measurements are true, welds are strong and fabrication is better than most of the other POS mazda's out there
Will run true and straight once on the black stuff !!!

Sorry Mate,
Should have answered earlier
2 main reasons
1) Less welds on rollover protection = stronger cage if ever needed
2) Sits low enough to get the tig welder around to the top for the funny car driver protection
Many cars have pretty suspect welds across the tops of the joins - this way we get added strength and welds I can show ANDRA at tech inspection time
PM me if you want more info
Cheers

And if they misbehave, threaten to feed them to the turbo...
Why wouldn't you cut some holes in the floor drop the cage down and weld the tops of the bars perfectly, that has to potential of folding up a little in a roll over, probably at its most vulnerable if it hit right on the bend of the bar, is this method used much in drag racing?
HoonBoy
04-02-10, 07:23 PM
That would be a fuck load of holes and unnecessary work given the standard Mazda roof has the structural integrity of a 16 year old Mt. Druitt hooker's hymen (cunt film)
It's the "normal" way of building a cage. You end up with four holes for the main hoop and front legs to go down in which are then covered over with the plates for the legs to mount on to. You have heaps of room to weld the bars and doesn't impact on the structural integrity of the roof at all, it's not touched. (You can also do it with holes for the front legs only if needed, but it's not as easy to get to the joins for the front legs/main hoop.
I'm not saying this has been done the "wrong" way, but it is different to what I have seen and am interested in the reason for the difference.

I spoke to Anthony (chassis bloke) and it is his preference to use the one piece roof hoop
He believes it is stonger and that the racetech tube will take anything the wall / black stuff can thow at it if I end up on my roof
Anyway - I just pay the bills !!!!
Have got some great pics of what he has done this week and will post them up later

Thought I would show you guys what will be powering this little monster along !!!
I know a few of you were hoping I would go 12A but I am very confident a certain 12A will be back out soon and I will only embarrass myself
So we have decided to go the tried & tested path for this one
Engine is being built with help from the following guys:
Steve Barnfather (69R1) for all assembly, final porting and little tricks think more HP for everyone!!
Rohan (Extreme Rotaries) for machine work, clearancing, balancing and porting
Kev Webb (South Coast Rotary) for seals
S4/5 13B
Extreme Rotaries PR spec Bridgeport (final porting by Steve)
Extreme Rotaries clearanced rotors
Dowelled (no stud kit on this one)
Modified Oil galleries
Modified heaps of other things proving again why I have good friends I trust with this shit !!
Here are a few pics to show you where we are heading

After a bit of decision making, I have decided to use all the manifolds and cooler I got from Mark Borg and the Mr Enforcer RX3 I figure if it has already run a 7 why change it !!

On a different topic Big thanks to Lee (NFS13B) for hooking me up with Strange Engineering in the US
After being f*#ked around by a few of their wholesalers, I have gone straight to the source and my new 40 spline axles and pro race brake kit are on there way here !!
Will hopefully land in the next few weeks
Wow thats alot of bars :)
Good solid looking cage. Heres hoping that you never need to test it.
What is the upper and lower inlet manifold?

I don't profess to know everything about roll cages, but it just goes against everything i've ever seen/told/experienced etc...
just interested in hearing why its built that way?

First time building one from scratch and it's easy to see why there are so many unfinished projects out there - every time I think I am nearing the home straight - something else gets in the way
The Strange wholesaler that stuffed me around was Xtreme Racecars in the states - has almost deposited the money and they stopped returing emails and calls - thank christ it took me a few more days to get the $$ together

Back to the car this week and Anthony has been making some great progress
I think she is nearly ready for her ANDRA pre-tech inspection on the cage

All that chassis engineering is almost making the 808 shell insignificant and virtually redundant. Almost a waste, hiding that craftsmanship. Good work by Strange to man-up on a stuff up though.

Please tell me it going out in a poo brown paint job, with out any sponsorship at least once
Long time reader of these forums but never really posted. I like the idea of this car but from an engineering view point a little worried about the chassis and cage. I realise it has been tech'd but...
The front hoop section on the cage is certainly not the normal way of doing things, it protrudes well beyond any support it is going to get from the A pillar posts. And the suspension mounts at the rear seem odd to me too. It is obviously a very narrow rear, but if you can't mount them to a cross over bar, why mount them directly to the rails, rather than making a bracket or tubular mounting point that is then screwed and welded to the rail. Dont want to be critical, but when it isnt on a jig and you see less than regular techniques......
10sec rx7
17-04-10, 07:54 AM
your never going to get a stonger mount than directly to the chassis rails.. why would you screw and weld a bar to them to mount the shocks to?
wotmazda
17-04-10, 08:27 AM
The shocks are mounted to the rail beacuse of strength, width and vertical location
Dale's comment is 100% correct
You will also see it is directly aligned to the horizontal brace between the two rails
Front hoop - his preference for building it that way
I hadn't really noticed it on to many other cars - but then had a look at a few OS 3/4 cars and plenty of them are done that way - The TCR RX7 3/4 car has exactly the same design and has never had any dramas
Each to their own I guess !!!!
Actually you can't simply say that a mounting is stronger when mounted to the "chassis" when that mounting point could be made at any side of the chassis, at different points on the chassis etc etc You have to factor in a million and one things particularly the load on the mounting point and that is why 90% of the time on a drag car you will work off the cross over bar and not the rail itself.
Not saying it wont work and not saying it is easy when you are working with such a narrow rear end, but there are ways that have proven to be the best over many years.

Location for shock mounts was decided following recommendation from Rod Andrews Race Cars (you all know who he is)
Arse end is too narrow to go to the tube internal and both Rod and Strange agree the shocks will work best in a fully vertical position
I have some better shots of the mounts coming and we are very confident that it will perform as required

I think you meant 'heroes' but I digress.
You are straight out wrong about the shock mounts unfortunately. That is how 90% are done. I have criticised lots of things but the shock mouunts are perfect.
Your complaint about the front hoop makes no sense either but I think you were just condescending to be cool so you have no idea about the design of a cage one way or the other.
Thanks for playing though!

You can ask questions no problems, I sort of agree with the front hoop and wouldn't do it like that but the shocks are definatly stronger there
And you obviously meant mounts....
If RA recommended it that way then I'm sure they'll be 110%. But the front hoop I stand by what I said.

Yeah... you were leaving it as an 808 - might as well leave it a stock colour, that brown is as good as any, or maybe the old pale yellow. Are you thinking of a graphics job in the paint?
Was going to say that leaving the stock numberplate on would be cool but I expect the chute or wheelie bars will be going through there. If not... it will be scrapping the ground pretty soon.

Build looks good, diff looks massive!
I vote for painting it in your company colours. Poo brown looks shit on 808's and would do absolutely nothing for promoting a panelbeating business.

As long as signage isn't an issue, a stock colour like the brown would be good. As mentioned before, there are too many going for a 'flash' look. I think there is a PR or east coast USA RX3 that is fairly stock looking with white paint and big tyres - it looks great.
A period colour with all the chrome for sure. Way too many leb spec rotors on the scene with chrome graphics up the side.
The Puerto Rican cars look so much better because they seem to be in the original colours with no adornments.

you mean having PAC performance in 3000 font up the side of your pink/fluro yellow RX is not all the rage - I refuse to believe it
pissing taking aside this is another vote for a period colour with at least some chrome remaining. It'll suit the chrome/polished rims and not look like its trying too hard.

Thing is you'd hardly notice when the panel work is done. Function over aesthetics. I'm gonna be doing the same kinda thing with my car. I can extended the wheelbase by up to 75mm, then the guards get modified around it.
A period colour with all the chrome for sure. Way too many leb spec rotors on the scene with chrome graphics up the side.

different would be fake rust paint , or at least using it as highlights on the edges. pulling off the old beat up shitter look would be hard
Different in the rotor drag world would actually be painting in an understated and/or period colour. I.e. looking good.

Fibreglass bits are here and have been for some time
Finally got a chance to bring some of them home and to start to mock them up ready for trial fitment and then strip for paint
Here are a few pics of the small collection of bits I got
