The cooling system....
Boot mounted radiator(fabbed by Road Runner Fabrications).
Davies Craig electric water pump Fitted to radiator. Plumbing runs through part cabin and exits at the start of the tunnel. From there it travels to the firewall and engine.
Exit path for the air is via the duct that I am working on. Pics of the part make below.
The entry will be from the two quarter windows. The car will have a firewall from the main hoop of the roll cage rearwards. This is necessary for the car to be log booked(from my understanding which is very little lol).
Radiator also runs two Spal 16inch thermo fans rated at some 2700cfm of airflow each.

It was a tight fit. Very tight hence the solid steel mounts. Here you can see the top view of the engine timing cover to the rail, the front crank pulley to the rail and the alternator to the rail. BEEEZ DICK.
That is about it....nah not really there is plenty more but can't be fucked right now!

Nah bro clean snapped the bottom of my arm at threadbo doing down hill a few months back. My fingertips were pointing my face.
Had plates put in and they also had to dothe carpal tunnel job a week later as there was too nerve swelling causing pain and numbness in my hand.
Surgens said I did a wonderfull job on it.

Awesome work - the car, not the arm.
How much power does the engine make?
Hasn't been started yet. Will max out the 3076 though so that should the fugure.

I have a soft spot for these after owning one as my first car.
+1 for epicness.

16-06-10, 03:30 PM
That is absolutely fuckin ridiculous. In an awesome way.
How are you planning to put 300+kw down through two front wheels in a car that will weigh 750kg though?
AlexinPerth
16-06-10, 03:36 PM
Solid rear suspension
You know how traction control works yeah?
Just cause the car may make 450-500hp does not mean that 1st, 2nd or even 3rd will see that much.
Realistically though I can't see t hecar needing more than 350-400 on the circuit. That would be with wide tires.
Many awesomes
I used to dream of putting my radiator in the boot, was talked out of it as apparently Id never comply with any realistic race class. Do you compete in a specific class or just to beat your own PBs at random track days?
I just want to do it for fun. Had been to a few open days and would like to do some super sprints or hill climbs.
Needs a firewall made at the roll cage main hoop. That is already in the process of being done, well the design and material choice is done.

Wicked stuff is all I can say at this stage, when I have recovered i'm sure more will flow.
lol, its a charade...as if u would...

SuperSprints.... Sports Sedan Class [or Group"A" ...faster qualifying time in SA] [slower cars are Gr B]
..............^^^^^ for ED ^^^^
FOR Alex:
Unregistered:
Schedule A
#7....Remove steering lock
#12...More than 500cc of hot liquid in cabin requires a TOTALLY sealed [isolated container... if coolant pies run through the cabin to the rear radiators the hoses/copper pipes will need to have a secondary enclosure or in the case of copper tube,no joins between the front & rear bulkheads.
Same rule for in cabin fuel lines.[no joins]
Schedule 'B"
#6...Front wheel Drive... Scatter shield.
#15...2litre oil catch tank.
rear bulkhead can be clear Lexan
Yeah Id run the lines under the car though. Any rules that are just directly against the radiator in the rear? Id have no problems adding firewalls/etc.
Yeah Id run the lines under the car though. Any rules that are just directly against the radiator in the rear? Id have no problems adding firewalls/etc.
What car??
[see Edit on my last post]
Wow, nice work. Certainly overkill with the cooling system!
lexan firewall to complex to shape.
Will run a three piece wall(hoop suround 1 piece, top section of hoop and bottom section of hoop).
Will be foam rubber that is shaped a epoxy resined to keep hold the shape.
Will use 24k gold reflectant on the rear side to combat heat radiation.
The top section of the hoop wall will have a cutout and be fitted with a lexan screen to still have some rear view. I know all cars will be behind me so i need it. LOLZ
r.e the coolingh system i was worried about it being in the boot so I wanted a core that could fir two 16 inch fans. I should have gone for a thiner rad say 22mm thick core instead of the 40. Hope it works anyways that is the main concern.

Love this, gonna watch with interest.
we need a charade v excel race
Had some time today so started making the firewall. The bottom half is all done sonow just have to trim the top section to fit 100 percent.

So the fire wall is done. Now when the interior is painted I will fit it and epoxy it. Has come up real goo fitment wise.
The outer section of the main hoop is dead easy and will do it tomorrow.

Started fitting the interior back in (as i wanted a break from doing the firewall/bulkhead) to finish the wiring and mount the hydraulic reseviors. Will have a hard time finding a spot for the hydraulic handbrake. It is starting to get cramped in there. Any ideas?
Thankfully I have just the right amount of leg stretch cosidering the pedal assembly shifted the seat so far back. Also it is nice the the column is tily and reach adjustable.
Anyways some pics.

So the car is being put back together.
Engine bay is done. Brake fittings and clutch line is poking through the fire wall. The brake pressure sensors are there as well.
There are some mega runs in the paint thanks to a fellow PF members handiwork.

So the bastard car is nearing completion. I can't believe it.
Still aiming for mid December. I will be in like Flin at this rate.
It is looking tighter than I remembered.
Wastegate is going to be moved so that it is behind the headlight so that I at least have a place to vent it apart from out the bonnet. What was I thinking?
Apart from that all that it needs is some little bits here and there and the engine loom terminated.
will do this in the next few weeks and tune in December when my tuner gets back from Sema.

Looking good alex :)
u forgot the pic with the pizza? haha
Been fucking around with the guards. They don't look as bad as i thought.
Want a 17x8/9 with a 255/265 45/17 or a 240/610/17 full slick
The 240 is an interesting tyre, not your 'traditional' dunlop tyre, it's a compound they use in England (make sure your tyre place has them in stock, they are normally a specialty order), it's more of a soft sports car tyre (somewhere between a D11 and D12), the 265 is the d11 compound (i'd say it would be to hard for your car)
awesome, alex! please advise of debut outing :D
Front of car all done. Just some basic wiring left to do. 60mm wate gate put in a more descreet position. Amazed i could get it to fit in there.
All the water lines are done front to rear. Cooling system is finished.

Unreal. Cant wait to see some videos of it in action.
So update.....
Was hoping to get it running this week.
All is ready to get it running.
Big hurdle.....motec does not want to talk to the isis system on certain channels.
Major head fuck....... so I ordered a MoTeC PDM 30 this morning. Should have it tomorrow. Will wire it up next week.
Man another chunk of cash gone but I love MoTeC prducts. Should have got one from the start and not skimped onit to begin with.

Nice work, Alex! Tell Scotty he needs to look at my nugget soon too :p
Seeing as there was a couple of replies.....
Interior was painted matt black this weekend just past. Have refitted all the interior.
Have just chased down a carbon blade to make the rear wing and have started making the front splitter....ghetto spec.
The interior looks so much better in black compared to white.
attn Ryan, I thought you were getting rid/selling the car?
And now have to start wiring up the pdm. easy....with help from Jamie@motec
mate I love it, like the charades.
Gay phone pic of interior coming together.

So busy few days...
Performed a full rewire(millspec, all black wiring) end to end with the new MoTec PDM. Started a config file(I am shit with computers) and managed to get all the lights and push to start button(kinda) working.
Then had Steve and RSWEPN from here come round and set up the can based channels i.e fuel pumps, thermo fans, vtec, etc.
Have to speak to MoTeC tomorrow about the PTS(logic) button setting though.
Everyone there admits fuse boxes and relays are a waste and a thing of the past. This is so much easier, neater and fully programable.
Estimated start date some day this week.
Huge thanks to Steve.
No huge thanks to my snoring while u cunts were boring ? :(
That PDM is awesome, so much neater.

We need some pics of the setup. Some pricing to scare me would be good as well.. I'm curios as to what it costs on top of the base unit.
PDM30 = 2800 with connectors and pins
Wiring(i used all black tefzel 20g) 80m roll= 115 bux. I have half a meter left.
The rest is my two and a half days to make a profesional heatsrunk motorsport loom and steve's my time to set up(4 hours).
Will get pics tomorrow night. Cant be bothered going to the car tonight.
Base unit?
either pdm is all you need. There are no advanced functions, lamda or logging that you need to buy... It is just a switching device.
HoonBoy
26-04-11, 07:58 PM
Just the term I was using for the PDM itself. Wasn't sure exactly what came with it and what extra bits are needed to make them work properly.
You need the pdm, the two connectors and 60 pins.
Oh an wiring of your choice. I could have used 22 gaude on some circuits but just bought an 80m roll of 20 gauge. It is still a very small loom cross section wise.
Here are some pics of the setup. Hope this is what you were after....

Very nice looking!
Spent a couple of hours over the last two days trying to fire up the bastard car.
Hopefully tonight it starts and runs.
so over it!!
Double bump, updates fool :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGfVDSKH9tI
Have to thank Steve and RSWEPN. Fuck me it took three days(4 hours to get started).
Had a incorrect value in the comp map for the map sensor which would cut fuel.
Talk about chasing our tails.
Car get dropped off this arvo for tuning.
Am so expecting to have some form of issue.
So over this car......who wants to buy it?
Wtf you on about? Is the tuna done with it?
How many kw is my 5k going to get me
That is some serious commitment you have.
What is it for?
That is the clock ticking before i get a call regarding some form of issue.
Then the car can be off loaded :)
So the go is......the car runs obviously I managed that part.
Pdm is all set up, ecu is set up and the adl is set up.
The car hit the dyno but My most awesome coil boots for the mercury cdi coils(ex ford/jag part) were not up to the task. Nippon pencil coils are going in.
The cooling system....well is what the tuner said is a bit overboard as the car struggles to get to 60deg with the thermos on and pump running.
Said some time was spent setting up a 3d water pump table but was not happy that the pump is nearly not runnig at all(with the fans on)
So looks like variable fan speed and switching has been done to sort out that area.
ummm, when i get the car back I will fit a second engine coolant temp sensor at the rad exit pipe that goes to the engine so that we can keep engine temps consistant and not have a see-saw effect.
May see the dyno today tonight.

Cool car - lots of stuff to play with.
Mind if I steal that switch tower idea?
Greg Rust
26-05-11, 01:36 PM
Good stuff mate, Can I suggest that you have a look at the thermostat as that would indicate an issue regardless of the size and efficiency of the cooling system.
Cool car - lots of stuff to play with.
Mind if I steal that switch tower idea?
Thanks dude.
Switch tower? The gearshift box?
If so, yeah mate go ahead. Works awesome and is well within reach. Also with motec using a relay as a master switch instead of the big red key of old times all you need is lil switch on there for the emergency engine cut out.
Good stuff mate, Can I suggest that you have a look at the thermostat as that would indicate an issue regardless of the size and efficiency of the cooling system.
Car has no thermostat mate. The complete housing had to be removed to fit some better routed rad plumbing. That is why I have the electric pump with variable speed control. The variable speed acts as the thermostat would. Does not run when cold then ramps slowly slowly until operating temp and tem maintains a set temperature(like closed loop temp control I guess)
alex.p that water pump idea is cool.
Greg Rust
26-05-11, 03:05 PM
Ah gotcha, nothing wrong with that then but 60deg is still a little cold, so can you delay the fan switch on point so that it gets up to 80deg
yeah.....from what i know on the dyno the fans run continuously(due to rad location) and temp comes way way way down. Mind you the car has not had any major load tuning yet.
Regardless the dude tuning it knows that there is a whole lot of fuck that can be set up to get everything working correctly.
AlexinPerth
26-05-11, 03:55 PM
You want the temperature to be consistent, and not low. Thermostats are good for this.
http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=26326
Nice! But I think the tuner has it sorted.
If not will pass this on.
So temps all good. Had my arm twisted into a set if id2000's and e85.
Will be finished monday if all goes well.
benny_pulsar_e
30-05-11, 12:35 AM
Then straight up to Freemans!
Best of luck bro.
So......
18psi = 380hp.
Coolant temps run no higher than 88deg.
1 fan comes on at 85 and it comes down to 79 in less than 30sec.
we figure that the fan will become redundant when the car is all ducted and moving on the road.
Needs a wheel alignment as i dropped the car off with it totally out hence only the 18psi tune. It shreads the tyres with more boost.
good stuff :) now more boost :)
cossie55

well done, good to see that you have it going.

lol... 280kw at the front wheels of a stripped charade
you really are as crazy as you look.
Crazy is when I go back for 26psi after the wheel aligment. hahahahaha
so does this rev to 11ty too?
when does vtec actually kick in?
Nfi when vtec kicks in. Did not stand Over scotts shoulder while he was tuning.
When have a look at the cal file when i get it to my place and start setting up the boost per gear parts.
Can tell you that with vtec disengaged it made 275hp atw at 18 psi.
Revs to 8500.
Bigger cams would be nice(these are standard b16a in it)

Wowee. 380 FWHP and how much weight? I've got that sort of powah but 1110 kg car, so I'm thinking you'll be fkn quick once it hooks up. Better get to the gym to work on the arms so you can sort of hang on to it...
Quaife torsen diff not more appropriate for this sort of silliness? Or you've gone so far the plate diff is better you think?
Top work anyways, and looking forward to some in-car ciruit/hillclimb vids!
Torsen don't work if a wheel lifts which it shouldn't. Plate will be fine and can be adjusted.
Car is off for the wheel alignment today.
This is how the splitter and wing came up.
Wing has 30deg of adjustment in 1deg increments.

links didnt work?
So went to wakefield for some testing on Thursday.
It was just testing so times were not really important. More how the car drives and how the complete setup works.
Results......
Off the bat the car is hard to warm up(wakefield in winter and 7deg temps)
It starts first push of the button button was running very lean not holding idle, hunting and poping on acceleration. This wasn also when the engine was at 70deg.
My opinion is that the charge temp was too low and the fact that wakefield has a different baro level to Sydney.
Fix will be an extra map sensor to look after baro and have a fuel table set up for it and also do something with the comps for the charge temp. Once all the manifolds had heat soaked it was fine. Car starts fine and runs fine here in sydney.
The rear mounted cooling system is all finished. The radiator is ducted soley from the two naca ducts in the rear quarters. On the track temps sat between 75 and 85 depending on road speed. Only issue being that when the driver would enter pit lane the temps went up a fair bit. I have a guess that this would be due to the fact that there is about and 8mm gap between the rad fans and the radiator core. When they come on it pull more air from the gap rather than the core. That with also an extra fan table in the pdm to operate then by road speed as well.
Um, the other small issue was that the spliter/diffuser would kiss the pavement coming down the main straight, back straight and down the hill. So really speeds through there were well low to stop that. 90km limit down the strights etc. Need to make some of those adjustable rods which attach to the leading edge of the splitter and the frame of the car.
Handling wise the car is very tail happy. Has plenty of front end grip but.....
If you have the correct entry speed the rear end is loose, very loose. If you dont have enough speed and try to drive some more into it and it spins tyres it understeers.
Need a taller final drive and a 7psi spring for the gate.
Grunt wise the car is quick, really quick from what the driver tells me. On the main straight he tried to give fifth gear a bit of a go and once vtec YO! and GATE come in the car fries the tyres(full slicks) and changes lanes. Needs a smaller gate.
So.... Throttle by wire, taller final drive and a 7psi spring is what I am planning.
That and will look into telemetry for it.
Apart from that lap times were slow if people are interested. The car never did any flat out runs at any section but going through the logger if you take the best sectors of the day I was told it did a 1.12
stockymcstock
09-07-11, 10:27 AM
i'm surprised it was overpowered
that's awesome, so much work man..... crazy stuff. what do you do about the snappy oversteer? I'm guessing you've removed so much weight from the rear there's just no tyre pressure onto the road? you might even need to ballast the rear to get the handling right? stiffer rear swaybar?
da9jeff
09-07-11, 11:08 AM
I would guess softer rear sway and as much rear wing as the front end will take. Mental car dude, hope you get it sorted out :)

Really cool build Alex. I hadn't seen this one before. Amazing amount of work you've put in and to a great standard from what I can see. Congrats.
Going to be tricky to dial in the handling but it's 'there' somewhere, just a matter of finding it. Keep up the great work and load some track vids when you get them. That's the only thing that I think Motec slips up on. Their video. I've not seen anything from their setup that has great resolution. There's something else on the horizon from another supplier. Aussie. Should be worth waiting for from what I hear.
Some pics of the rear end. The carbon radiator exit cowl will be here next week. Trial fitted it yesterday and it is ready to lay up.

Seriously great work Alex. Inspirational.
btw, have you driven with those Pista seats yet? The reason I ask is that I bought a seat with a halo in the past but this was in a primarily street driven car. I returned it soon after as it was dangerous in traffic with blind spots and impossible to reverse park. However the style that you have with the cut outs look like a possibility. Just wondering on your impressions?
Yeah mate I did use them on the street earlier in the cars life. Left hand scope of view was fine but right hand was a tad difficult and you had to be carefull of those lane changes.
Thanks for the comments mate ;)
this is so much crazier than i expected! Tops work alex! This is my favourite car on PF!
Thanks mate. You should of always known I am crazy. Will be at wakefield for more testing the 23rd this month. Falls on a sturday.

Well the other factor to consider with Halo seats is that they often make getting in and out of a caged car much more difficult. Not what I'd want if things started getting a bit hot inside...but then does the chance of that outweigh the benefits of extra lateral protection for the neck?
As for the positive comments, well you deserve it with such great work. I still think that 'beasty' is going to be a handful but it's your handful and I'm sure will be extremely satisfying to get it all sorted and start to produce some seriously quick times. Look forwards to some new video!!

Well done, good to hear that it went so well.
If you go to DBW, you should be ablt to do some tricky stuff with the throttle translation table to help with boost control for drivability..
-Jamie
Been a while. Carbon radiator exit duct is done. Was not entirely happy with it. Will get it redone.
On a good note I found out why the car was overheating comming into the pits and it had nothing to do with airflow but rather the output on the pdm clipping due to too much load. I though the ewp was a 7 amp draw but turns out it was 12amp wired on an 8 amp output.
so on the track the car was sitting on 75 deg and the pump duty was 70%. comming into the pits the engine would get up to 85deg and pump the goes to 100% duty. pdm clips and retries twice and then shuts the channel down. restets when ign is switched off and on.
Being able to data logand view all the pdm channels and currrents draws on the adl = win.

If it helps, you could have the ADL, via an alarm (and perhaps light), notify you if any of your PDM outputs has gone into an overcurrent state.
This way, you know something has gone wrong striaght away.
You can also setup the Master reset input as a button, and reset all outputs if it does happen.
With something like the water pump, I would recommend changing the output to 'always retry', which will make it keep turning on continually, then shutting down if it trips again, after a configurable delay.
regards,
Jamie
Thanks for the input Jamie. Always a good working base.

Good info guys, thanks.
Saw some kind of mad Corolla today at Superlap that reminded me of your car Alex. Had all the fans going on out back. Looked pretty well done also. You could check it out tomorrow if you were in that neighbourhood.
Was there yesterday and will be again today mate. Call me round midday .
So...9psi made 215psi and 23psi made 328kw. Not bad. Has some funky closed loop boost control and boost by throttle map with a nine position rotary knob that does some funky shit! Temps did not go over 77deg on the dyno. Winner.
So what are you planning on racing this in?
IPRA hahahahaha
25th sep buladelah hill climb
10th oct Honda Nats.
track day at wakefield in a week to do some testing
What should I race it in mate?
328kw at the front wheels in a 900?kg tin?
you probably only get traction in reverse.
So these are the last mods that should be done. I made some air scoops for the ducts, running evans npg(r) coolant, project mu 16+ carbon pads and castrol srf fluid. Honda Nats at wakefield this monday. Should be doing low 1.07's.

So went to Wakefield yesterday for Honda Nats.
Convinced the driver to turn the boost map to the highest setting(have only used low boost = 230hpatw).
Grenaded the final drive and split the gearcase. OUCH!! Funilly enough the crown and pinion were the only standard parts in the transmission.
Gotta love it. Oh total of 2.5 laps for the day. 2 laps were a warn up on low boost. Drove into the pits and turned the knob to high. Yes it only made it to the fish hook hahahahaha.
Only positive is that the new RAD CAMS are fucking awesome for picture and sound.
links to said picture and sound fool!
edit - bad luck about the breakage
This car is so impressive I like how you just went straight for the big guns :D Would have been good to get a few laps in first (other than the warm up) but ah well.
Will be good to see where it gets ya next
After all the effor, time and money I just want to get to the point. Big Guns it is!!
Finally loaded a couple of vids of the new cameras that i am using in the car. This is a vid looking at the driver and dash. The windscreen view is still loading to you tube. Car was on low boost 220hp atw.

Only other updates are that the feed for the radiators has been changed.Iinstead of the rear quarter 3 inch nacas it is now running 6 inch pipes fed from the rear quarter windows. I kinda worked out that the naca ducts were a massive restriction in air flow.
Having two scoops made for the quarter windows in carbon and the front splitter made in foam core carbon also.

Looking impressive Alex. That thing has some mumba down the straight. Bit of torque steer but that is predictable. Like the cameras. Good resolution. What are they, Motec?
Was the driver just unfamiliar with the gearbox or is it a bit tricky to grab the right cog each time? When was that footage taken?
Thanks mate. Yeah weighs very little so even with the boost on the lowest setting it gets up and goes.
Cameras are the ones from RacerRecal. 6000sux(i think his name is) from here recomended them and after seeing his footage could not say no for the price. If motec was a HD setup I would get them but they are not!!
The shifter works rather well. The only problem is that there is some movement in the bottom of the stick where it attaches to the rod which leads to the gearbox. Being such a long stick it magnifies at the knob end.
That footage was taken in October. Third time the car went out and still sorting the cooling issues :( Hopefully that is all behind me now with the new radiator feed :)

It's going to be very interesting to see how the extra boost/power translates into times. That is, how much extra torque steer you might get. Still, it's a howler for sure. Think you should be able to get into the 1:05s in the not too distant future and then some.
I didn't think they were Motec. Can't believe how Motec have dropped the ball in that dept but wouldn't be surprised if they're not working on something. Your's look pretty damn good. Might have to check them out. Just looking on their site now. What brand/models are yours?
I was thinking it was the ratio with the longer stick. I'm facing a similar thing. Hope it doesn't lead to issues with shifting.
Look forward to seeing some more film. When are you back out there, Jan?
Um mine are the RadCams.
Told you once before, you should get the custom CMS shifter from the States :)
It easily pissed in a 1.08 at a shakedown day prior to that video so TBH it will piss in the 1.05.
333pg333
02-01-12, 06:47 AM
Yeah that CMS is a thing of beauty but the money tree has considerably less leaves on it lately. I looked at that when I was going to convert to a GT2 tranny. Now with the 968 trans I'm not sure if it can be converted to run off cables, maybe? The car is getting the full rewire at the moment. Including shifting to a Motec m400 and sensors all over the place. Costing me a bomb.
I'll see how we go with what we've got re the shifter.
Ha, yes, you'll probably be pushing the 1:00 min mark by year's end on slicks!!
The CMS shifter does do cables.
Did you end up going with Alessio/Ezzio at CPC for the motec products/instal?
You will love the pdm mate.
1 minute flat aye.....I WISH!!
So here is the radiator feed set up now. Just running on the fans this new deal makes a massive difference.
Previously when the quarter panel naca ducts were feeding the radiator if the fans would come on there was hardly any airflow when standing behind the car. Obviously the 3 inch piping was a massive restriction for two 3000cfm spal fans. Now when the fans come on, fuck me is there some airflow behind the car.
May look agricultural but once all the carbon work is done it will be fine.

No sorry, I meant if the 968 trans can run off cables? I've not researched that. Probably can I'd think.
I went with a guy called Mark Robertson Rsport race engineering. He works with some V8s, Lotii etc. He was the engineer on the Tilton Evo at Superlap. He get it's to a point that you could drive your car to the dyno and then he works with a guy called Phil (can't remember his last name) who apparently works with/for CPC.
1 min on slicks mightn't be out of the question one day...

That looks like 150mm alu flexi, or 6" in the old language. That should allow a fair bit of air movement. You car is going to be like that Chaparral 2J fan car!!
The rad box intake view. Had the quarter windows out to fit the transitions with sealant. Thougt I woud take some pics.

So was out at Wakefield today. Best news EVA... the cooling sstem is sorted. Amazing it was due to the size(dia) of the radiator feeds. Now with the six inch ducting and only those little ears pictured above popping out of the rear quarter windows the car runs super cool when under full load( not higher than 78 deg). Guess this means now all i jave to do is play with the ewp speed to raise the temp a little. AWESOME!
Time today....1.07.7. Slowly getting there.
Needs more front camber, rear sway bar reconnected and another test day.

Great news Alex. A plan actually worked out! 1:07, what tyres are you running on again?
Second hand 200mm radical slicks.
Special thanks to Steve for tech support on the day.
Will be back out this coming 23rd and very early in Feb.
Some vids from testing the other day. Driver looks a bit more comfortable in the car. A lot more actually.

Yes, a fair bit of torquesteer. Plenty toey though!! What diff does it have in it? Bit too big a drop in revs into 5th, can you get a shorter cog to chuck in?
had a 4.26. now has a 4.05. Driver changes at 7500. Can go to 8000 but he is a bit shy. I could still raise the limit to 8750 but am thinking long term.
BTW the rev drop is not due to the final drive ratio it is the 5th gear ratio.
from booze or from butthurt?
Hahahah. Can't even remember writing that.
So carbon quarter window ducts are done. Will be at wakefield tomorrow and post vids and pics later.

Yep, that's what I meant. Can you get a shorter cog easily? Looking forward to new vids.
Wakefield went well. Ended up removing the New carbon quarter windows. Car would not get over 65 deg when driving flat out. So removed the scoop and it sat at 82 all day. Winning!
Small update. Went to Wakefield two weeks ago. The rear quarter windows were running new carbon fibre scoops I had made, cost a small fortune. Did one session and temps would not get over 65deg :( looks like my new cooling feed set up for the radiator is way tooooooo efficient! Luckily the new set is two piece soIi just removed the top half and ran with just the trimmed down lil 6 inch dia ears. Temps never went over 82 deg. Now just need to alter the electric water pump map in the ecu or fit a termostat and all will be sweet. Here are some pics so you know what I mean about the scoops....

Also the front undertray with diffuser is being made with cannards all in CF. It is not just your usual flat sheet like most people run. It is actually a diffuser modelled of a radical front end I got my hands on. Some progress pics....

Will be back at Wakefield in a week and a bit.
Also after seeing Profi's effort at the rear diffuser i think I have to have one also!!
Oh and if the undertray seems too wide it is due to the fact that it is made to accept the 2.5 inch wider carbon GT front and rear quarters. Need more tyre on the pavement!! :)

He will also be doing the front and rear carbon GT wide body kit.

Looks like it floats around like a boat ( no offence intended!)
Bigger bars and better shock, possibly up the spring rate a bit, your right about the alignment too, that won't help the floating.
Loving the build mate, I hope you get it sorted
Not offended at all but don't exactly understand what you mean by "floats like a boat"?
Better shocks? I am using DMS 50's which are 3way adjustable and not exactly cheap. 650lb rear and 750lb front springs. The shocks can handle up to a 1200lb spring adjustment wise.
Sways bars are 22mm front and 20mm rear.
4deg neg front with 6deg castor. Can't recal the toe. On the rear there is 3deg camber and can't recall the castor sorry. Tyre pressures hot are 28 deg and that seems to work well on warm days.
Can you offer some advice and maybe be a bit clearer?
Cheers mate.

I am no expert on suspension set up at all, so I can't tell you exactly what it needs but,
well the float (side to side movement) may be exaggerated in the camera
They are very heavy springs for such a little car??
Better shock didn't know you had adjustable ones already sorry, well adjusting the ones you have, start full hard and back it off until it goes alright.
the alignment settings look ok to me but I am by no means an expert, just in my opinion if I was in driving the car I would be unnerved by the constant need to correct the direction of the car. maybe it is just the car is light??
Does that make more sense?
Lol dude you seem to have tourque steer due to wheelspin confused with body roll. That's ok...Rookie mistake ;)
Yes the car is light 8XXkg and has plenty of power. Oh just incase, yes it has an LSD to combat wheelspin.
For the slicks the springs are actually on the soft side, but the car will eventually run A050's which they will suit just fine.
Streety
31-01-12, 09:58 PM
lol does it wheel spin everywhere? you'll get there mate you guys are obviously good on the tools!
mmm dunno about your spring rates, I don't know the drill for slicks but I am pretty sure both our evo track cars run 450 front 550 rear (due to the ratio) with slicks and radials. one turns in exceptionally well and the other is a pig but overall a quicker car for a prod car.
Hahaha yeah mate the wheel spin is everywhere even in fifth gear at 200 plus. Ultimately I will fit a dbw throttle assembly and run traction control but for now I really just want to get into the 1.05,s at Wakefield the way it is.
Thanks mate I do all the prep work on the car. It is what I do for a living so it is easy really.
Fwd set up is different to 4wd. They may share some similar handling characteristics but setup is different.

Yeah you can but dbw is much more functional, smoother etc
OK so had a busy weekend fitting up the new undertray/diffuser and making the aditional front carbon splitter as the undertray is 30mm lower than what it used to be.
I can say I am happy with the way the splitter has come out. Overall good job. .

That looks very menacing. Did you make this yourself Alex? I need to get me some of that stuff. It's super low. I'd be interested how you go at Wakefield with this. Eastern Creek won't be such an issue in terms of ripple strips except for T11.
But I am jealous.
Hahaha it is and ankle cutter!
I thought the exact same thing when I fitted it all up.
It is 50mm from the deck. Should be ok and tough as. Will survive and off at Wakefield....I hope.
Yeah all me with the help of a mate.
Have also started with the temporary wide flares. Five and a half inch increase in track overall. Will post pics as. I go.

Vid from Monday. Finally the car is trouble free and just needs a fluid change before next event.
What times did you get out of it? (at work, can't watch vid)
Was Porsche Club Canberra super sprint.
Did a 1.07 flat beaten by an evo(1.06.7). Came second on the day.
Data says the predictive with best sectors will be a 1.06.2
Will hit that target in a fortnight when we head out there next. We have hit our best predictive on every track day so far.
Car still has heaps in it. Picked up 13km/h down the straight now reaching 199km/h. Would like to see 205-210km/h.
Needs more camber as the left front it using way too much tyre. Couple of deg should fix that.
Happy trails :)

Good work! The track was apparently shit house so thats a fantastic result.
Btw the evo did a 1.04 on the Sunday
1.04 after fitting a new turbo?
One of the Porsche guys mentioned to me that it was some stroked monster and very fast.
Will be in the 104's soon ;)

Michael Hiscoe (http://www.michaelhiscoe.com/category/sonic-race-car/) did a 1:042 on Sat, 1:035 on Sunday. The Sat trackday was when my mate did a 1:048 in his Porsche 944 turbo. Sunday was the dry day.
How was Monday for traction Alex...did you drive or was it the normal 'pilot'? 13kmh is massive gain. What about the final corner speeds?
(No word from the dyno yet...could be a good thing I guess...)
Ahhhhh, Mic wasn't there on Monday.
Rained morning. Dry line came out at about 11am. That is when the Charade went out.
Didn't drive. I really have no time to drive with all the maintenance to do after sessions. I like that part of it anyways so win win.
Have not looked at all the data yet mate. Just the max speeds at the sectors and times etc.
Fingers crossed for the 944 mate

Love how it keeps getting better and better each time out. Congrats, at least that must be rewarding. It'll be down in the 5's soon enough. Let me know your corner speeds when you've compared them.
(Seems you didn't cross your toes...car getting towed back to shop to fit front crank trigger wheel. Just decided that it didn't want to run properly any more. Another waste of time and money and will have to cancel more trackdays. FU ^%^^&#^*^%&#%^&#%^$%!$#%@$ CK!!! :( )

Man it was hot on the fax trying to get entry through. Did you email yours? Your car is going to get a lot of attention being so unusual. Be great to get it out to Eastern Creek soon. Problem is that there are so few trackdays there it seems. ARDC is lucky to do 1 a month, if not less. Driving Solutions are about the same. Must do so many private days that just aren't shown on any calendar??
Anyway, you're car is looking great. You've put in so much work and it's a unique racecar. Congrats.
Hows this thing going to go on semi slicks? :p
Will keep you posted Sir :)
They will be wider, taller and softer. Who am I kidding lolz
So after getting over the fact that the Bastard Car was obviously not of good enough quality to gain entry for Super Lap I decided to get on with the next step.
Bigger Boots and flares to cover them. Was not happy at all with some universals that I was supplied so took on the task to make my own that are really shape left to right.
Started with a profile gauge and some balsa wood, fired up the heat gun and made a skeleton. When all was exact I hit it with expander foam. When this cures I will cut and sand down till the skeleton. Shouls be presto! new custom flares ftmfw, I hope.

Well done Alex. Makes me want to continue that mindset...
Hey, what are you going to do once you finish the wider guards in terms of bringing your wheels out? I was going through all sorts of possible permutations re this. Started to consider full custom suspension but was worried about chasing roll centers for ages.
Didn't want to just use spacers or wider rims. What are you intending to do?
The wheels that are in the pics fite just fine. They are an eight inch with 0 offset.
For the time being I have located some 15x9 with a +15 offset to fit my 250 slicks. No spacers required.
I have sourced some centre lock wheels for the front in ten inch and will have hubs made to suit.
r.e roll centres etc....I will worry about that after the car does it's 1.00 at Wakefield with shit handling :) Be positive. Car just needs more fucking grip!!!
For now I am just getting the wheels to fit as close to the strut as possible and keep the geometry as close to standard, if that exists, as possible. Hope that made sense.

This is an inspiring car to me Alex. I have a Chinese made car but similar in size and heritage(Charade/Starlet). I love your car!

WTF?? You ok?
Ok now. Happened two months ago. A few days in hospital and a week or so to get over it.
All good now. Just kinda put me off the car. Itching to play with it again though.
Yes sir. Made me realise how easily you can off yourself thought even feeling it. Bad!!

Glad you've recovered from that scare!
Get yourself an extractor fan setup before you start playing with it again. and pipe the exhaust straight outside like they do on most dyno'.

SHite Alex...that would be a big scare. Don't do that again!
Very east to do.
Car was in one of the basment garages reversed in. I was bleeding the cooling system engine runing standing at the boot. Takes a bit of time to do and is a bit of a prick.
Last recollection was feeling faint, trying to walk out and that was it.
Was found and dragged out by No Pics.
It can happen so easilly. Trust me I have learnt my lesson and anyone who reads this should remember this story when working in an enclosed space with engine running.

noted! holy shit.
That's properly scary. Glad I've got a door at each end of the garage now!
