View Full Version : Chops Jaffa Racer
So getting the shits with not racing (still building the other car), iv'e been looking for a cheapo 3J car that doesn't need a whole heap of money spent on it and doesn't need tyres/pads etc etc thrown at it each meeting. So finally this fine example of engineering pops up at the perfect price ---> http://cgi.ebay.com.au/improved-production-corona-/180607219761?pt=AU_Cars&hash=item2a0d077831
The seller is towing it down from Qld as i type, should be here in the next few hours.
From what i gather, it has a few good bits on it like brakes and suspension. Engine is a re-built 18RG (what-ever that is!) that has farked bottom end. Comes with multiple 18RG engines/heads/other parts etc etc so should be able to make something out of the bits for Wakefield in a few weeks!
Now i need to learn abit more about these 4 banger engines - if the car shows any potential, ill wack a turbo on it :D
Note the totally ghay sticker on the bonnet ....

18rg is a toyota 2l 8v twin cam twin carb (usually) engine...
check out toymods in the tech section look for a thread titled "for the love of a tractor engine... " for lots of good info and stuff.

As a good bang for buck engine, any good? If i was going to spend say $5k or $8k on go fast bits for an engine, is it the one to do it on? Must be 2000cc or under. I've seen references to a 'Beams' engine or the FJ20. Am i better to go grab one of them and spend the cash on it?
BTW - that Toymods forum wants everything but a birth certificate to join :knock:

Either the gen 5 3SGE BEAMS or the Honda or the FJ20 or the SR20 will be better and lighter than the 18RG. They're early 70's technology.

Thanks Bill. I have NFI about 4cyl engines... the guy was talking about how the 18RG was rare and great etc blah blah blah. Ill get the 18RG going for this Round then maybe sell the engine and bits (suppose to be some Yahama wiz bang heads coming as spares) to get something with more powers. From my very limited searching, the 18RG is a bit of a minor cult thing. No good for power, but guys just like/collect them????
EDIT: or is the 18RG a good boat anchor??
choppo if you need axs to toymods pm me mate
Axes?
They're cunts but that is taking things a bit far.

They aren't that bad, but the more modern engines are heaps better and easier to get good bits for. You'd have to check to see if you're allowed to run a later one though.
For that Corona I reckon a gen 5 3SGE would be a good thing, easy to fit. Ask RA45GTCelica (http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/member.php?u=1109) from here about them, he's done heaps with them and gets great power.

the heads were designed and made by yamaha (so are the 3S as well for that matter) but that doesnt make them rare or collectable.
as bill said, old tech, good at the time but if you sold all that shit off you'd be able to get a decent beams 3s, maybe ECU and quads at the same time.
a stock beams with ecu, quads, and headers will spin up 130+rwkw pretty easy.
OK, engine is seriously farked (uploading video now).
So, what do i put in it within 2 weeks to have fun. The Beams thing? Who has contacts that don't bend me over on price?
get hold of ashley birks.
simple and effective if you get a 3sge gen 3 or better. gen 1 and 2 are shit house

from memory you can use the gearbox from a 2SC celica or similar to bolt up to a 3SGE, doing the usual convert FWD to RWD toyota motor shit.
funny this thread popped up, i was thinking about building something for IP and as i have a corona already that was the (il?)logical choice.
watch you oil control if you use a 3S, i think they like eating bearings if you dont.

Chop,
What fish said Ashley Birks or Tony Prior or any of the guys that run sprinters etc in the u2l class should be able to hook you up with a decent 3s
Yep, talk to Ashley for sure. His old man built and raced the silver Corona in Unders that has been around for the last few years...
Justin McClintock should be able to point you in the right direction too...

2s bellhousing w5x series box and a 7m starter motor. or to keep the starter motor away from the exhaust use a 3y bell housing.
yes paul wilkes? (PWR on ipra forum used to have the yellow coupe that he sold to his brother has a 3s too, I have his old front brake setup on my road car)
Yes oil flow will be the big thing! I have a set of 3s extractors here that were to go in a hilux.
Ok, update. Booked in for the Beams conversion with Craig W in a couple weeks (i wont make WP :(). Thinking of running the Altezza 6spd as it will be the easiest/cheapest option albeit a bit heavy and ill have to lock out 6th. Use the factory computer and all. Now to chase up Geoff Fear for an engine! Can anyone PM me his phone number??

Glad your not wasting time on the old heavy slow 18Rg slug, I found them slow 30 years ago and their Timing chains are every bit as bad as FJ20 ones but without all the FJ20 goodness.
The HQ must be taking longer than planned?
The HQ must be taking longer than planned? Yeah way longer. Actually hasn't moved due to backyard renovation and 9mth old child #2. The HQ will be up and going though by years end. Brand new engine, diff, gearbox, electronics and aero... all just waiting to be installed.
Having said that, if this U2L thing bites :yup:

Hows the 900hp Engine? 800hp was so 2010, If your not finished till late year you may need 1000hp. We are a bit slow over here as our fastest IP car is a V8 with only
528rwhp.
Sorry, Ill leave now.

Hahahahh! Didn't change much in the engine so still thinking ill get around the 600hp... around that 520rwhp. Maybe im just slow too
By the time you do an engine / box swap, add more horses and get it sorted so it's half fast you'll have spent too much. Should've bought the ex Jack Yick / Burges Civic, been a front runner until the HQ is done and then sell that for what you paid...
Just sayin'...
Whos got that car now? Did you buy it Paul? :D

if i remember correctly one of the cars went to some guy just getting back into it, and jacky yicks car went somewhere else but hasnt been raced in a while..?
i remember speaking to juzzo mcclintock about it as he nearly bought it instead of the altezza...

I think you can run a 6 speed (edit: no you can't, thats for late model)
18.7 The restrictions of Article 8.2 notwithstanding, if the model of automobile was manufactured as standard
with a gearbox of more than five forward ratios, the replacement gearbox may have up to six forward ratios.

interesting reading, it might be a challenge to keep the corona up to 1095 kg though.

fucking awesome, was thinking a standard weight corona with a 2 litre would be a bit slow.

NO BUMB DRAGGER!!! :rotflol:
Yeah, nah... $5k buy, $3500 to wack the Beams thingo in it... still keep it all under $10 is the plan. Won't be the U2L champion car, but a good starter for someone who wants to try IPRA. Should be sale-able? Logbooked, cheap and reliable... got a few 'good' bits on it, don't have to worry about consumables or body work...

Yeah, just lock out 6th gear. Wouldn't make a difference if i could run 6th anyway.

It will be slow :yup: But that ain't the point, something to run around in and have fun without costing too much. AND unload at the end to someone who wants to try out racing without spending a fortune.
Edit: funny timing buying a 'fill-in car' now. The HQ is going on the hoist this week. Completion is still months off, but at least starting again.

LOL!
back to your earlier question - yeah I think it would be a good sell-able car once the HQ is done for someone wanting to step up into IPRA/MRA/iRace etc
maybe the button man could buy it? go on Adam!

But it is a 7000rpm 'good' engine now. Next person who buys it, at least it has a reasonable engine. No where near a a race spec thing, but better than the POS engine i got
