g'day all..

Gonna do a body rebuild on my girlfriends datto 1600.

i've done body work and respray on my own 1600 but never done a baremetal spray.

Once the metal is uncovered, is the first coat i apply just Etch primer?

or is there something that i should be putting onto the metal before the etch ..

Well once you get all the paint off, you should get rid of any rust speckles etc with a 3m clean and cut wheel (not quite what its called, but I cant remeber). Its like a angle grinder/drill bit add on which has loops of wire coated in a black gritty substance. Good for stripping hard to remove paint, and very good on rust. After that you should spray some rust neutralising agent anywhere which had rust, and or some red oxide primer or equivalent rust preventative. Then etch prime the whole thing, and then put on 1 coat of proper primer to seal it completely from the elements while you are working on different panels. After you finish each panel, sand then reprime it to prevent surface rust developing, it only takes a a few days if you get *any* mositure on it (eg finger prints etc).

alright, so.

Bare metal -> red oxide -> etch -> then some sort of top coat for protection.. i suppose i could just use a thick guide coat for protection ? ..

Well if I were you Id put on a nice layer of primer over the etch then a guide Dont worry if you go thru to metal, just reprime it.

Whats a good Bare metal Conditioner to Protect the panels
before etching?I've heard of a product called De-oxidine which
You apply to stop the surface rust forming and then just wash it off with water before etching.

It depends what your local paint shop has. They should be able to tell you. Most products of this type are approximately equal. I goto Autolac as they are the closest to my place
