Theyre good for high pressure and or high durability situations. Real braided lines (not just with sheaths to look nice) are really quite expensive. Thus the appearance of hose sheath kits at supercheap auto + etc.
Price depends on length, diameter and the fittings you require. Call pirtek or enzed (enzed were cheaper when I last had to buy some). They should be able to tell you want you want to know.

Due to the fact that you cannot see the internal rubber wall (which may crack and leak).

not exactly true... you can buy ADR approved braided brake lines, and the RTA can't do shit..

Also, the local under-car people told me that in NSW (and possibly therefore in Qld) there was no longer a problem with non-ADR'd braided lines. 30-year-old fogeys like myself in Volvos would probably get away with just knowing that, but you young whippersnippers would probably want to have the legislation at hand (if it's true) if you're hanging around in groups that defect-sensitive policepeople might be targetting.

You can get ADR approved lines, NFI on the price.
You can also buy the braided teflon hose and fittings, but it's rather expensive. Fittings are ~$15 ea (you obviously need 2 per hose) and the hose is in the order of $15 per FOOT (not meter).
I used it in my race car everywhere but in the cabin and to the front rails (where it's steel) and it cost me around $250 at a large discount. It has saved my arse though when the suspension bottomed out around turn 1 of EC and mashed the hose flat. Didn't fracture or puncture, where a rubber one would have (got caught between the body and the rear suspension arm - hoses now re-routed).
