Width of jap v8s/740gl engine bay

Anyone have measurements on how wide a 1UZFE and VH(VQ?)45DE are? And how wide and how long is a 740 volvo engine bay?Forg?(I'd measure mum's car, but its in Victoria). THe volvo's coming off the road soon........I think one of these with a quiet, smooth, revvy v8 and auto would be a fantastic combo, and I would get the car quite cheap, and given the fact its got huge brakes, a mega tough diff , and a super stiff braced up chassis this would be a cheap ish conversion in terms of not having to arse around with changing all the surrounding bits.Only real huge impediment I see is finding an lsd for a reasonable price, and decent shocks and springs. imagine the embarrassment of being whupped by a beige 1986 Volvo ............MWAHAHAHAHA!!!! (evil laughter echoes from the walls of my lab)

    The 1uzfe is basically a 700mm trapezoid.
They will fit in the volvo OK. I have seen them in both 240s and 740 (i think). I think the 740 will take a soarer engine (front mount sump) without modifactions to the sump and making some plates for the standard engine mounts to go on.

I have a controller which will make the auto box "tiptronic" Forg take note .
It also changes the gears more quickly. And makes for the best of both worlds auto change whenever you want it.

    I recommend this conversion thoroughly.

If it fits in a 240, I really can't see them not fitting into a 740 - the 740's engine bay is definately longer, and the cars are wider, so the engine bay probably is too...

Just re-read - yeah, I know they DO fit into 240s - bad wording by me.

Its for A341E and A342E auto boxes which usually come with the 1uzfe. I would safely say it would work on a A340E as well (haven't seen one but if its the same aA341).

Push the up button you go up a gear, push the down button you go down a gear. It also has outputs to drive LEDs so you know which gear you are in, 1st gear Led, 2nd gear Led etc. The other output option is for a seven segment display. So it will display the number of the gear you are in 1,2,3,4 and the decimal point for torque lock up converter.

Just to confirm. They fit in both 240 and 740s. I have seen it done on both cars.

Kdog, who has done the conversion into the 740? I always thought there would be ample room, I mean I've seen VG30's in 240's and they are mega wide. This would rock I think, make it into a perfect grand-tourer type vehicle. But how goes clearance for steering parts, hooking up power steer that sort of stuff?
I'm still wondering about the nissan one, especially as they come with sexy staino headers and a real big throttle body from the factory. Anyone got the nissan V8 dimensions? I think its the one from the infiniti or whatever.

    v8

im interested to find the dimensions for the vh45de or vh41de also.

A question i have also (sorry for hijacking) is that i was told by a workshop that to engineer the swap you need to use OEM engine management to meet EPA and other laws. How would you go around this using these 8's that only came with an auto (both nissan and toyota) when you want to use a 5 speed manual and the OEM ECU is only available in auto config or can the auto ECU be wired to run a manual car?

    Thanks

    Creative engineering.

Put the aftermarket ECU up under the dash somewher hidden, and the ( /a/any) factory ECU somewhere fairly obvious with the wires disappearing into the carpet.... "Yep, got the factory ECU there, a real hassle to wire up, but it's running great"...

    Or so I'm told...

I reckon that sounds like the go, or you could just get an aftermarket ecu which would fit in the same box sizewise as the factory one and mount it in the box, like the targa guys do.
Doesn't fuss me, I want an auto anyway, manuals are for fours and maybe some sixes and stuff without huge torque in my opinion, I would hate to be trying to keep clutches in a strong v8 in a (quickly)street driven car.Anyone heard any bad news on the toyota or nissan auto boxes? lots of jap autos suck the big one, like nissan ones especially.

A friend of mine did the conversion for the 740. He has also done his own 240.
From memory it wasn't that much work. Pretty much anyone who can fabricate engine mounts should be able to do the mechanical parts for you. At the very worst you would need a custom sump made.
As for power steering he just used the pump that comes with the 1uzfe. For the 740 the donor engine was from a Soarer so the power steering pump is remotely mounted, for a crown they are attached to the engine.
As for the quality of the A341e box, as far as I can tell its made to the same standard as the 1uzfe.
I would go an Autronic for engine control. If you want to then you can keep the auto and buy a controller for it. Everyone I know is happy with the way controller works and the gear changes.

Just thinking, should be pretty quick car with an lsd and decent tyres anyway, without engine mods- what do them 1uz's make, what 200kw? so thats up from 90kw (if that) and a stuffed auto, would 14's be in the picture? ......ahahahaha

With the LSD you're most likely shit outta luck, they exist but nobody's ever actually seen one ...
Actually, there's a guy on aus.cars, Al, who bought one for some Jeep project or other recently; he said the place he got it from had a few. May have to swap centres if they're 240 diffs, dunno.

    90kW?! That's being generous!!
And your power/weight would be similar to a WRX if you put a stock 1JZ-GTE into a 740 ... probably a little better.

Apparently the exhaust fell off of the 740 the other day, so mum's one step closer to parking it in the shed permanently....*rubs hands together greedily*
sweet though, hahaha bye bye rexie........or at least catch it once the wheelspin stops...Cooling wise, 740 radiator be good enough? or would a 760 item be bigger and better, or possibly one from a 960 turbo? I'm trying to figure out as much as possible that needs doing. Also where are decent volvo wreckers? I'll need some black interior parts, door trims and dash and seat belt covers and pillar trims and stuff to black the interior out.crook beige cloth/velour doesn't do it for me. Turbos have an LSD ? yeah thats a major stumbling block without one I might as well stop if it can't be got, I mean with good new ones getting on for the price of the engine...

I'm pretty sure my old 760T DIDN'T have one, (or if it did, it was busted), and they'd be a lot more common if they were standard on Turbos.

BUT, with a big exhaust and a little more boost (127kW std, so maybe 140kw?) and a manual, it never really felt like it needed one. Coming on boost out of tight corners it would light up the inside rear wheel, but nothing too bad. How this will translate to your 200ish kWs is another issue though... Check out the "Volvo diff into Celica" thread from late last week if you haven't already... I don't think the lack of factory LSDs should stop you going ahead with this.

Radiators? NFI! Typically they're pretty good in Volvos though - I'd just compare it to a stock Lexus one and see what you think.

Wreckers - I've always gotten pretty good service from A-Class in Sydney. Dunno if that helps you though...

A-Class in Sydney & "Country Wide" in Goulburn are two places that I've found are most likely to have something I want.

Turbo's didn't get LSD's. If you really need one, you can get a Torsen-type centre for about $750 to suit. The diff guy said my 22yo diff innards were as-new, and only replaced the bearings 'cos I asked him to.

People who've modded their 740T's with more boost & not much else do find they need a better radiator; many go for off-the-shelf three-core items in the USA. I've got a reco'd standard-sized one but with cores that're much closer & much better-spaced fins; I'm hoping that'll do the trick on mine. Mind you, an up-boosted inefficient engine probably puts out more unwanted heat than an efficient larger-capacity one.
