Old school cars best left old school?

I've been seeing too many old school cars lately riced up and make to look like night clubs. I saw a neon lit undercarraige on a 1200 ute the other day!
I was curious as to what other people think about classic cars like Mazda rotarys, Datsuns and Toyotas being pumped full of checkerplating and crap like that.
Also what do you think about high tech engine swaps? No class?

i think the old school should remain mostly old school. i mean hey im all for a bit of lowering a nice paintjob( not that colour change shit on an old car) and a nice set of wheels. but all the neons and strobe lights and glow int eh dark valve caps is going to far.

as for a modern engine i think a lot of it works very well in the older cars but i think it should be from the same brand.

Flares and small spoilers on old cars look preety tuff too in my opinion.
    yep

I share your opinions. Some people just wont go for high tech engines because just not the same. Still, I dont think you can beat 300hp in a 900kg car!

mate couldn't agree more! i don't mind neons and chequer plate on the late model cars, but please on an old-school? old school should be left that way- schmik paint, lowered, original chrome and a nice set of rims, mmm sweet.

As for the motor? either goes depends on the budget really doesn't it- late model efi turbo inter-cooled=$$$ old school motor= well, not as much. but 300 horses of efi turbo power in a 900kilo car is very tempting

i own a gb galant by the way
everything just takes time and money

Well all four of my cars are old school, 2 of them having 90's technology motors (well the 2nd in the process). My VC Val is one car which I have ummed and ahhhed about conversions for it for a long time, always considering the 1JZGTE, but as yet still remains with the old slant motor. But it is really up to personal taste, some people believe it's sacreligious to even think of sticking a Toyota motor in a Valiant, but to me, what more could you ask but to cruise in style with the reliabilty, comfort and power of a more modern, technologically advanced motor. Just my 2c.

I'm a fan of keeping older cars looking old school. Trying to make then look newer than what they are usually just makes them look tacky. I do find that big wheels/ultra low profile rubber on an older car sometimes look out of place. If you want the racing look go for something that suits the era. Replicate what was raced sort of thing. Same goes for kits/wings.

As for engine conversions, that doesn't worry me at all, apart from cars that have had half the front end chopped up to run a large front mount intercooler. I prefer a neat hidden intercooler instead.

But these are just my opinions and what makes an old car look good. Build what makes YOU happy. If it ends up being different and impressing me..more power to you.

I feel the same way guys. I got my self a 72 datsun 510 getting 4 more soon. But I would never doing anything like that wiht them its just not right. As for everything else like motor and some interior. Like a nice sr20det and some race sets chillin in them are nice and looks great I feel. Here is a link to some motors u can make with the L series http://home.att.net/~jason510/Motorspecs.htm I was thinking about build me a 2.3 litter one..

I also prefer a neat hidden stuff. I dont realyl care for them just droped on the ground though. I would rather see them with big rims and wheels. Like 16s if u can do it or even 15. Then maybe lower it if u can get away with it.. HOw do you guys feel about HID in them though?.. It would help u driveing and they look great too...

    Well
I don't like underbody neons on old school cars much, or checkerplate interiors and bright interiors.. but i dont HATE them either. Sometimes it can look OK. Just depends on your likes/dislikes. As far as engine swaps go.. PFFT! I'm going to whack a 3SGTE into a AE86 soon.. nu school engine into an old school car.... are you going to tell me that's a bad thing? hell no!

I think some new stuff looks great. My car is about as old school as you can get! (1968) and i tried a set of 14 inch Hyperfang rims on withe low profiles an they looked awesome! So some modern wheels do look ok, neons well its all down to the owners preference, i had a borrowed set on my car for a few months and it did match the paintwork which looked good imo. Bodykits should be left old school, my bodykit that is in the works inlucdes smoothed SLR5000 flares, an old works capri front spoiler and no rear for the moment and maybe a GT Falcon shaker or Hornet bonnet scoop (undecided whether to wreck the bonnet). Interiors always need to be updated! Especially seats and steering wheels.

    well.....

when i finally win the lotto.... ( heh heh )

ill be building a ss torana hatch or gtr lookalike, with a 20b in it.

now that would rock, i reckon older cars, with new hi tech engines ROCK.... but do not rice them up with stickers, neons, 28" wheels..

p.s..... neons suck A55 !!!!! especially when u see more of the tubes themselves than the light they shine ( yes thats you, blue lancer in hobart! LOL@U )

I agree with you guys, old school cars look the best when they've got a subtle paint job, original chrome and badges, and lowered with slightly bigger wheels.

New EFI motors in old school cars rock!

    Old school motors rock too!

But no neon or lurid colour schemes in the car thanks, black vinyl and grey carpet does the job nicely. Retro!

Late model seats are ok too - some old car seats just plain suck.

I want a restored black/orange Porsche 914 with an EJ20T in it, with slightly bigger wheels from a later model.

    Cheers,
    Adrian

Well, I don't know about 'sick', but I agree with the rest of it. A nice set of SIMPLE alloys (not chromies, and not alloys with intricate designs, they don't match old styling).

A big thing is chrome, you have to keep the factory chrome. Nothin gp!sses me off more than when people do up a car but paint the bumpers black or even worse, body colour!

And retro tech.. I love it!

    I could live with that

    mechanical noise at idle...

actually, the one time I heard 'Judge' manouvouring (on a Autospeed cruise) it had that sort of sound, although somewhat smoother than the setup I nominated.

I like retro-tech, as far as engines and electrics go in old cars. Up until very recently I have been wondering about a good way to go for the Buick when it should come time to do the engine. I really wanted retro-tech. But in the last couple of days, I have been thinking about it, and I've realised that maybe (even though it's going to be tricky to do given that most of the parts will have to come from the US) a beefily-built Buick 455ci motor, with a sorted Holley, lumpy cam, extractors and beautiful loud exhaust system might be the go....

If only I could get my bloody stock wheels widened!

But I do like the juxtaposition of old stuff with new stuff, as long as it's not distasteful.

I gotta admit it does look pretty poxy when you see an old school car with neons and all.

Being a driver of an old school car, 1969 R100, i have to admit nothing beats the performance of and injected turbo. As much as i would love to have a 13B PP in my R100 sucking through a monster webber, the noise, fuel economy and lack or performance compared to the turbo motor is what made me go late model power plant.

Neons and chequerplate on any car looks . Rice sucks. Later model EFI motors are OK in older cars, these days you pretty much need something that runs on ULP as technically they don't make Super anymore and the Lead Replacement fuel is crap.

Once again I suppose it's all in the eye of the beholder. Just look at FAT57 which has been taking out heaps of trophies and awards. Old school car, but I dont think there's much old left on it. I was shocked to see those old big side chrome parts on the rear guards replaced with vynlk stickers. I dont think it has any chrome left on it all but it still does look very nice.
