    Cast Iron Manifold Welder

    hi all

im chasing down a welder that can weld a pipe onto my cast iron manifold as i want to fit my 35mm garret external wastegate.

oh and in melbourne somewhere. all help will be appreciated

and also how long does it take to weld to cast ??? i hear you need to bake the manifold first before you can weld it.

    thank you.

    Ricky

The Yellow Pages will list a range of specialists that do this. I use (or used to) a guy in Ferntree Gully....Bob Black, but I believe he's retired, I'll see if I can find out.

Welding of CI is usually done with special high nickel rods and is actually closer to a form of brazing. Anyway, pre-heating and slow cooling after welding is recommended for CI castings to minimise distortion, residual stresses and post-weld cracking.

welding of cast iron is rarely 100% successful. don't be too surprised if it developes cracks at some point.
    Your social better.

To avoid cracking, peen the weld with a chipping hammer to relieve
the strees on the weld, this helps alot.
    Dont waste power,create power.

if your gonna get all that work done why not just get a proper steam pipe manifold made up way better IMHO
everything just takes time and money

hahaha and also costs over $1000

so no, i like the idea of modifying the standard manifold as ppl are running 10's with standard manifold anyway.

    also
i have met an engineer through my brother in law.

he is actualy going to mill the manifold at work and make a 1.1/4" hole and tap it with a BSP thread.

    a) Tapping it means no heat so no chance of hairline cracks or the welds stuffing up 6 months later.

    b) being threaded means that the gate can be removed and place a 1.1/4" bsp bolt into the manifold for no leaks and no gate.

    c) its costing me nicks.

    thank you ricky.

PS: ill post pics once i have it back

Just make sure the bolt is the same material as the manifold these get real hot and will expand quite a bit so expanding and contracting at different rates will crack a manifold in a hurry.

2ofdem you cannot buy cast iron bolts as far as i am aware
