    WRX gearbox whine

    hey
just recently my mates MY00 has started to whine from behind/under teh dash. now its related to the speed level and gets pretty loud above 100km/h.

it hasnt started for any apparent reason (only he has started driving on the highway a fair bit) never launches the car or done anything different for the last 50,000km. Still on orginal clutch which does slip occasionally.
Box still feels the same and moves the same but has the whine.

Is this normal?? any fixes?? is his box rooted??

Is the speed it whines at getting lower than when it started? Mates 32 gtr did that, turned out the front diff was rooted.

    explain the whine more...

when u put it in neutral and rev is it there ?
or only when the gears are engaged ?
does the noise increase as revs increase ?

its a constant whine related to speed only, it it there when in gear, out of gear, clutch in and out. Rev all u like it doesnt change the whine. it goes up and down with the speed.
comes from under the middle of teh dash.
    Gearbox hasnt received any punshment.

gears are smooth and feel and sound normal.

Box has to be split to get to the font diff, the noise could be in the transfer case as well which is at the back of the box which can be removed without splitting it.

Sounds like the frotn diff though unless something really drastic has happened in the transfer case.

Just took it into perFOURmance Motorsport and Robin just said it was the usual whine from AWD and is common with the RS/WRX. He said i was just being picky and is nothing to worry about.

    Thanks for the responses.

timebombs if u treat them like shit. Launching them like an idiot wont help either. AWD does have some drawbacks in the rex.
For their price, u cant expect them to be perfect in every way. If u treat them right they will last, many can vouch for that.

i have to say that after breaking my own gearbox (not a wrx) i tend to think the whole wrx gearbox being like glass could be a crock of shit.

being easily the most popular awd car (and one of the most popular locally delivered sports cars in general) it was sure to be critisised by many.

i'm not saying that they are definately not weak, however i no longer believe some of the bullshit spread on the net about cars. especially after being told by so called 'experts' things about my car, only for them to turn out totally false, not to mention killing my gearbox while driving normally with only a slight power increase, which some regard as 'relatively strong' (same as a gtir box).

try driving a rwd car on 410s on the rear (for similar levels of grip) and see how long that gearbox lasts...
