    OFFICIAL: Chinese cars are shit

Renowned Chinese manufacturer JIANGLING have been hammered at a German safety test. Testers claimed that there would be "no chance of survival" in their Landwind SUV in a 65km/h head-on crash. Jianling countered by claiming "Landwind is secure. We've passed the national Chinese automobile test."

    Hmm....

    I call shanaigans.

The german car industry I think are alittle worried what the new Chinese car market will do to their industry.

But then again, the Chinese cars could well be crap.

I dunno - I reckon the average BMW/Mercedes etc buyer wouldn't jump ship to a no-name dodgy Asian vehicle. I'd be interested to learn the standards of the 'Chinese automobile test', and I'll wager its a damn sight less exacting than the German system.

It notes at the bottom of the article that the Dutch are echoing this observation, if I was looking at a new car I'd be keeping my distance and let others give it a go first.

You should see the local bus manufacturing plant down Tainan, which I walk pass on the way to work. The little to none reinforcement in the skeleton frame is enough to tell me never to catch a domestic built bus!

Cutting down on materials, and the small workforce indicates how much effort is put into manufacturing...they seem to roll out these buses out pretty fast.

If the Chinese version of a safety test is anything like the Chinese version of road rules ....then look out.

Anyone who has been to Shanghai will agree...it's mayhem.

Yes Spammy, was in Shanghai last year! Absolutely unbelievable, we did a tour of the city and the tour guide said 3 people die on the city roads every day, I was shocked it was that few! Absolutely crazy stuff...

If the internet existed 40 years ago there would have been a thread titled Jap cars are shit.
20 years ago there probably was one titled Korean cars are shit.

In 10 years you will need another country to start producing shit...

For a city of 18-20 million people...most of whom only learnt to drive last week, that road toll is actually low

The national road toll for China is about 520 people per day !!!!!!

    spammy,

on my recent trip to shanghai, i was simply in awe of how fucked the roads are there....

the big cities are nothing compared to the more remote areas....overtaking on the right (LHD cars) with oncoming traffic is acceptable as long as u toot the horn briefly...

people on motorbike and scooters (there are fucking millions of them) are completely invisible to all cars, trucks and buses...get out of the way or get hit...

i had the pleasure of being driven around in a SUV style car made by chinese maker GREAT WALL and it was pretty crap....alot of the cars over there are US makes like buick etc....except for the VW jetta taxi's, i reckon there are 2 taxi's per person in china!

We're kinda going off topic here...

Anyway...unlike other countries...a zebra-crossing or walk sign does not mean/allow you to be GOD!

That is perhaps the single thing that annoys me the most...is how fucking close drivers/scooters come to taking out a pedstrains as they cross the road...they simply have no respect for pedestrain.

My patience is probably better then most of you guys, but on the few occassions when they have come too dam close. I really swear my head off. Such that I'm a real prick, unlike the locals. I give drivers death stares, hold out my hand and point to them when they try to drive pase me (inches away) when I cross the road....making them aware that they are fucking dicks. At the same time I also aware the gangster/mafia would kill in broad daylight, I usually take note who's onboard.

I'm sure you all know how low the salary is...I was talking to a cabbie one time, he said he makes about $2000NT/ day ~ $66 AUD. It's a rat race, a game of survival, such that every passenger counts. It's almost like the cabbies are stalking you while you walking along asking you if you need a cab.

What the cabbies make is considered good money, which is why there are so many of them in comparison to...

This is what we pay the local staff we've employeed:

    Secretary - $30000 NT ~ $1200 AUD/month
Drivers - $40000 NT ~ $1600 AUD/month ... they have a cushy life...drive us around and sleep when they wait.
    Workers/labourers $50000 NT ~ $2000 AUD/month
    Engineers $60000 NT ~ $2400 AUD/month (min 3 years experience)

Spammy, yes there is something shitter these days...

Tremolo, Absolutely. I look at their (chinas) motorbikes & for $2k you can get a new 250 trail bike (not yet ADR'd) now put them next to a jap equivalent ($10k) & yes they look shit...but for most users (farms etc, they are not race bikes) it would be hard to justify 5 times the money. They are shit...but people buy shit all day every day to save money. I suspect the cars will be the same...a mid size full spec 4x4 for $15k...no matter how shit, they would still sell.

It's just bicycle culture applied directly across to cars...it is pretty scary at times I remember.

I remember once as a pedestrian on the foot path i got pushed out of the way by a slow moving taxi.

Tim510, that's what I'm saying they behave like this because they feel they will lose out...the faster a cabbie gets you some where, the more passengers he/she can pickup per day.

Course the money they make is enough to live off...but nothing for luxuries. What surprises me is how some cabbies can use new cars for cabs such as focus, metrostars, teanna, cefiro, camry, civics, accords, lancers, grunders etc any car we personally wouldn't for day to day work a taxi endures... mind you it's their private car and work car in one. You can tell especially the ricers taxis...GT wings, alloys, flashing lights etc...

Evo Lee, all local type buses have very little in the way of lateral structure- roll over or upside down is not real good for the passengers...

edo is exactly right- we are enthusiasts and we have technical knowledge to use in our decision making processes when buying a car- most people don't give 2 shits as long as it is shiny and cheap.

If I was in the Japanese or European car manufacturing industry I would be doing my best to discredit the chinese too.

I think I read somewhere that that Landwind thingy will retail for ten tousand pounds in the UK. That's 1.3L Focus money for a 2 ton Prado-sized thing. They will sell bucketloads of the buggers I suspect.

But it does make a refreshing change though from the usual 4WD situation...in the case of the Landwind if you got clobbered by one your car would probably do more damage to it than it does to you....

Here's a vid of the crash test btw...check out where the steering wheel and left front wheel ends up

I want to see the same test for another 4wd- that is a pretty high speed offset crash- not an accident that I would want to be in in any car.

    Does look pretty shit though...

Muz, do a google search for "crash test videos"

Most are yank but they're relative. Watch how bad the SUV's perform.

Holy shit - the poor little crash test dummy in the back seat nearly got hit by the steering wheel!

Babalouie: I don't think they'd sell many in the UK at all; they'd suck the ($2.20/L) petrol, be hard to park, and the Poms are as xenophobic as it gets so a new make from China wouldn't be too well received, I'd imagine.

Actually ive got a crash test vid of the 2000 Izuzu Trooper, which I think the Landwind is a copy of?
It does alot better, the cabin doesnt deform anywhere near as much, and its design is probably 10 years old, the more recent SUVs are alot better.
